We're sitting outside on a long wooden table where the head of the table forks out to two separate sides of the table. allowing more people to sit comfortably. There are string lights on each side being hung up by trees creating a relaxed atmosphere.
I take a look at all of my pack members, we've grown in numbers as the years have passed, new faces and old faces all smiling while chatting happily.
I can't help but smile while seeing everyone, I sit up from my seat and raise my glass with a knife in hand. I gently tap my knife against my cup as I clear my throat.
"I know I made a short speech before hand but I want to delve a bit deeper. I know recent times have been tough as we transgress into these new times. From the recent Faye spotting, from losing a beloved pack member, to adding more people to our pack. I want to thank you for sticking with us through this. I know how easy it would be to get up and run from our problem. I say our problem because it's not just mine to bear alone, I have a wonderful pack who will be there with me thick and thin. Tonight is the full moon and with this run we will be running outside of the radius of the protection spell. With that in mind please everyone let's be careful as we run. Now I want to have a special thanks to the Chef who works endlessly for the pack, I think we all can agree his food is making us all drool in anticipation! "
I chuckle and look around the room, others are laughing with me and I notice some that are not, I take a quick mental note of who isn't,
"So everyone, Let's dig in and enjoy! "
I raise my glass and drink as everyone follows my lead. As I sit down I look over at my beta who doesn't seem to be in a very good mood. I mind link him, ' What is going on? '
He shakes his head lightly, 'Nothin to worry about.'
I can feel that he doesn't want to talk about it as it would just make him more frustrated so I cut off the mind link and start to eat my food. For the starting dish he made crab cakes, something easy for everyone to eat. Then for the main course he made chicken parmesan or for those who like vegan eggplant parmesan. Then the best part of the meal he made tiramisu. All of it was delicious and was eaten quickly with nothing left over. We always make sure to make a lot with big helpings as werewolves are always hunger more on a full moon.
As everyone gets done eat it ends up almost being 11:30. It's time to get everyone ready.
I have the beta usher all of the children under the age of 18 into the house. We don't allow the children to be outside with us when we change, it's always been a rule and one that I follow. The older ones take care of the younger ones or if they have older siblings they go ahead and go home for the night. Every time you can see the disappointment in the younger kids eyes thinking that they'll be able to see the transformation as they don't know quite what it all entails. The older ones know as they're prepared for what's to come, they don't want the younger ones to be afraid.
After all of the kids are inside we turn off the lights allowing other to have privacy to shift. As alpha I am the last one to transform, we are at our most vulnerable in mid shift. the younger years you have trouble shifting as your body isn't used to it yet.
I hear bones starting to crunch as midnight hits. Some of them howling out in pain. I knew all of my senses open, allowing myself to be on full defense.
All of a sudden I smell a wonderful scent. The smell of lavender and honey fills my thoughts.
I stand up taller putting my nose up into the air smelling this sweet scent. I instantly relax as I can tell that the smell is coming closer and closer. All of my thoughts leave my head as I walk into the pack house from the back door. I'm speed walking towards the front I can hear people talking to me but I cannot focus on them. All I can think about is this amazing smell. I throw open the front door to the pack house. Then my body becomes rigid as I step outside the door.
Across the way into the outskirt of the forest is this beautiful black and gray wolf. Her eyes a light blue color that penetrates my soul. My wolf screams at me in excitement ,
' MATE! '
I smile as I realize the moon goddess has given me a blessing.
I take a step forward then all of a sudden she takes a step back.
My smile instantly drops, I stretch my arm out reaching toward her. Not wanting to let her go after finding her. As many steps as I take she takes them backwards. She darts in the direction she came from and leaves me there. waiting. Is she going to come back. My wolf starts to whimper and the dread fills my entire being.
'Is she going to reject us?'
I can feel my face crumple up ready for the tears to spew over. The last time I cried was at my mother's funeral. I won't cry again. I stare towards the way she came in determination. I start running towards the forest as I shift into my wolf.
'We will find out mate.'
