“Olivia, please give this document to Daniel for me?” An employee asked.
“And do you mind getting me a cup of coffee?” Another asked.
And before she could even leave the room another employee asked “If it's not too much
trouble, could you ask Anthony in the marketing department, when you come back with her
coffee, whether my proposal has passed or not?”
Olivia agrees to everyone's requests.
On one hand, she is going what is being asked of her because she’s new there. On the other
hand, she is hoping that doing what they've asked is an opportunity to make some good friends
in the company.
A week had passed, and although Matthew and Olivia saw each other on occasion because
they worked in the same office, they barely spoke again. It was as if the events of that night
didn't exist anymore, and they were just ordinary co-workers.
“I hope this is finally all over.” Olivia said to herself.
After running back from various departments, to do what everyone asked of her, Olivia was very
tired. She had put her head down on her desk and only lifted her head to drink some water.
Hanna in the next cubicle suddenly knocked on her cubicle. “Olivia, I have a job for you! Will you
do it?”
“What job?” Olivia looked up in a daze, so sleepy that she could barely keep her eyes open.
Hannah laughs and puts a stack of papers on Olivia’s desk, then points towards Matthews office
not far from them. “How about giving him this stack of documents for me? Its an easy enough
job right?”
“Hannah, it's just a few steps, you are very capable of doing it yourself.”
Olivia is a little annoyed. It's not that she doesn't want to help, it's just that it's Matthew.
“Oh god Olivia, please just be nice and do this for me!”
Looking at Hannah's pleading eyes, Olivia decided to do it, and bring them to death himself,
Matthew. That's all Olivia has to do . Just take the files in Hannah's hand and bring them to him.
Olivia gritted her teeth, took the papers from Hanna and walked towards Matthew’s office. She
put the file in her hand in front of Matthew, who is working with his head down. Matthew looks
up not expecting it to be Olivia standing next to him. At the moment they locked eyes, Olivia’f
face suddenly turned bright red. And she quickly turned to leave. Matthew’s deep voice came
from behind her.
“What is this that you gave me?”
Not knowing why he said that, Olivia turned back around and saw what Matthew was holding in
his hand. She was stunned and her face flushed.
“That, that.....” Not able to get her words together, thought to herself “Hannah put that pink love
letter in the file!”
Matthew raised his eyebrows, then put the love letter on his desk and looked up at Olivia. He
was as serious as possible. “Do you want me to make the other night up to you?”
“You think too much!” Olivia shouted, the embarrassment just now that she felt, turned into
anger. And she shouted at him with a cold face. “Hannah gave you that stupid love letter, not
me! And as for you making things up to me. The only thing I want from you is to act like nothing
ever happened and continue acting like we don't know each other.”
Matthew was surprised by her tit-for-tat attitude. She picked the love letter off his desk and
threw it in the trash can. She stood there for a minute embarrassed by her actions and
apologized.
“Sorry, I was so mean.”
After all it was Hanna who did this. So why is Olivia so upset?
Olivia bit her lip and regretted her attitude. But the spat was over and there was no way to
change how she just acted. Not knowing what else to say, she chose to turn around and leave.
One morning , the female employees of the company gathered around Matthew, like bees
collecting honey, asking him all kinds of questions. Mostly about his personal life.
Tired of dealing with these women, Matthew couldn't help but look uninterested. He suddenly
thought of Olivia, who had paid no attention to him. No matter what she is doing, she has never
bored him.
At lunch Matthew took out his phone and opened the facetime page. Looking at the screen,
there was still only his own message of accepting the FaceTime request. Matthew couldn't help
but be worried about whether something had happened to Layla. Wishing he'd asked her for
other ways to contact her earlier.
Thinking of this Matthew edited a message and sent it out.
“Where are you? I accepted the FaceTime request, I am getting worried you're not replying back
to me. Just let me know that you are okay.”
So far there were only 2 people on his personal Messenger and FaceTime account. One is his
mother, and the other is David.
She now makes that 3.
Olivia was coming up with a new plan for an email to send Jason. Her cell phone suddenly
vibrated. When she picked it up, her eyes widened instantly. Jason has agreed to her FaceTime
request. And also sent her a bunch of messages over the last 2 days. Most of them were him
being concerned about her. She doesn't know how to respond to them. What is she going to say
about everything? She can only ignore or regret what she and Matthew did that night. After
hesitating for a long time, Olivia clicked on the reply box.
“Jason, I am sorry I didn't respond earlier. I really don't know what to say. But you can be rest
assured that I am fine now. Things have been taken care of. And I am working hard . Can you
just promise me that we won't speak of this again. Okay?”
After a little while later, she got a reply of only 1 word.
“Good”
It was only 1 word, but Olivia instantly had tears in her eyes. Looking at the screen she was very
sad. She felt like her mistake was going to haunt her forever.
While Olivia was still at work her and a few employees were asked to work over time and get
their work done, and everyone agreed. Olivia’s best friend Mia sent her a message asking her
to come out for dinner at 7. Olivia adjusted her mood, and thought about it for a minute. Olivia
agreed to meet with Mia at 7. She figured a change of scenery might help her to feel better.
They went to a place that they often went, to eat and talk about Jason. The friendly pub had the
best food around.
“People are past using the internet to connect with people. And our circle of friends really don't
want anything bad to happen to you. Most internet guys are weirdos. And you are saying you
want to meet in person eventually? Alone?”
Mia loved Olivia like a sister and would stick by her side no matter what. Olivia retracted her
phone, a little upset at Mia’s response.
“Anyway, he agreed that we could FaceTime. Which means that our friendship has gone a step
further. And yeah we will meet in the future. But who knows.”
Olivia tried to speak as usual, trying to keep all her emotions to herself.
Mia couldn't help saying what she had on her mind.
“What if you find out he's a really old man after meeting him? What if he has a wife?”
When Olivia heard this, she immediately retorted, “No! Are you out of your mind? Jason already
told me that he was in college and was my age. And he's definitely not married!”
“You know, I really don't know what to say about that. Why do you believe everything he says?”
Mia starts to feel helpless.
“Come on, let's not talk about him. I am going to go to work at the Jones’s house. Do you think
there is a back door there?”
When Olivia realized that Mia finally changed the subject, she couldn't help but breathe a sigh of
relief. She smiled and then hit Mia on the shoulder.
“You have such strong work ethics, you can't fail! However, why are you asking about a back
door?”
Mia laughed but then picked up where their conversation left off.
“I am not talking about me. And the back door was to sneak you into the house with me! But I
really want to know what it is like to indulge in the internet day after day?”
Olivia just shrugged her shoulders at that question.
“Don't you have any men who work at your company? Listen to me. Find the most handsome
one and just talk to him.”
When she said this, Olivia’s first thought that came to mind was Matthew’s expressionless face
and the scene of the two of them naked in the same bed. Then suddenly Olivia said, “NO! The
Jones family forbids office romance!” She really didn't know if that was a true statement. She
said it in hopes to have Mia stop talking about her getting a man.
“Tell me about what happened. Why is office romance forbidden?”
Mia curled her lips up in an evil smile.
“Stop it and eat your food.” Olivia demanded.
Olivia didn't want to talk about him. She bowed her head and ate. When she got the first fork full
of food in her mouth, her brain started to go into overdrive. How could she not tell her best friend
what happened? But she was able to give such a precious gift like her virginity to a complete
stranger.
Oliva couldn't wait to get back to the office. Because Olivia chose to have dinner outside of the
office, she started to feel bad that the other employees still haven't had anything to eat. She
finished up with Mia and hurried back to the office. When she got back she offered to order take
out for everyone that was there. Everyone cheered and then gave Olivia their orders. A female
employee took the initiative to walk up to Matthew and asked him shyly, “Do you... Do you want
something to eat?”
“No thanks, my work here is done.”
Matthew sorted out all the work on his desk, got up and took his coat without any facial
expressions. Said a lukewarm goodbye to everyone and then left.
When people like him leave, all the “smaller” employees around will say things like “Oh wow!
Big wig is finally talking to us! They rarely communicate with us.”
Olivia just doesn't understand. How can they worship someone like that who doesn't even take
time out of his day to connect with them.
One male employee couldn't help but try to make jokes about the situation.
“I don't understand, This is a legendary elite company. Not everyone has a Wharton double
degree. It is really different from other companies. I just wish I had a powerful brain like he
does.”
Olivia pulled out her phone and looked at the message again from Jason. Biting her lip, she
breathed a sigh of relief in her heart.
Take out finally was delivered. And the garbage that everyone created was collected by Olivia
and thrown out.
The employees who stayed to finish their work, looked at eachother and couldn't help but speak
about Olivia.
“She is so naive.”
“She doesn't seem to be cut out for a business position.”
“ How did she get this job?”
“People like her are too simple. They are very good people, just too simple.”
“Where could she have studied for 4 years?”
“She doesn't even have a common business language.”
“I bet when they sell her brain, she will still be happy and willing to count money for people.”
She didn't know who said what. As if she were a forbidden curse. And when she came back into
the room, everyone kept silent and did their own things as if they weren't just talking about
Olivia. They acted as if she didn't exist.
She smiled at everyone and walked back to her desk. But little did everyone know that her work
was already finished for a while. The reason she didn't leave is because she is a newcomer and
felt embarrassed to leave early. She simply picked up her phone and sent a message to Jason.
“Are you off work yet?”
She quickly got a reply back. “I am off of work and I am driving home.”
She responded back, “Okay, please don't message me back, pay attention, drive safely and talk
to you when you get home.”
Olivia was afraid of her messages putting him in danger. However Jason sent her a reply within
seconds. Which she was really not expecting. She couldn't help but smile sweetly from ear to ear.
