For perhaps half a mile we pass through heavy jungle, climbing ever higher. Through gaps in the canopy I not only get welcome spots of sunlight on my face and glimpses of beautiful blue sky but I see that Gora’s peak is looming ever higher and closer. We have long since gained her foot and are working our way methodically up. Soon we approach an outthrust elbow or knee of her and slip through another dense thicket to find a narrow gap cleaving the modest cliff ahead of us. We pass through this into a crooked passage between high walls and continue to climb. After another rough half-mile we finally emerge into a beautiful little valley about a quarter of the way up that rearing cone.
