7:02 AM. Kang Safehouse. Day 4.
I didn’t sleep. Not really.
Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the static from that voicemail again.
_“Leave her dead.”_
Taewook didn’t sleep either. He was already awake when I opened mine. Same spot on the floor. Back to the wall. Staring at the 4 names on the board.
Mom. Old Lady, Gangwon. Joon. ??
He handed me rice. Cold.
“Rule 2,” he said. “We don’t run from the voice. We make it talk more.”
*The Problem With Running*
If we left the house, the caller would know.
If we called someone, the caller would hear.
Gangwon has no network. If we tried to call the Old Lady, the whole village would know through the shop radio in 5 minutes.
So we don’t call. We move.
*The Plan: Bait With Silence*
Taewook tore off a page from the notebook. No phones. No texts. He wrote 2 things.
*Move 1 - Mom*
He went to her himself. 7:30 AM. No driver. No security. He parked 3 blocks away and walked the rest.
He was inside for 3 minutes. Long enough for the neighbor to see him leave with red eyes.
He said nothing to her. No words. Just a hug. A long one.
If someone was watching her, they’d think he told her bad news.
*Move 2 - HQ*
9:15 AM. Taewook walked into the building. Went straight to his office. Closed the door.
10 minutes later he walked out. Head down. Tie loose. Like a man who just lost something.
He told his secretary, voice rough: “Cancel the search teams. It’s over.”
No reason. No details. Just grief.
Two moves. Zero calls.
We wait to see which one the voice reacts to.
*11:48 AM. Safehouse.*
Taewook came back fast. He checked the locks twice. Looked under the bed. Looked at me.
“They bit,” he said.
He pulled a small burner phone from his pocket. Not his. Not mine. A phone we kept for trash.
One new text. No number. No name. Just words:
_“Crying won’t bring her back, Taewook. She’s in your house. Stop pretending she’s dead.”_
My rice dropped. It made no sound on the floor.
They didn’t take the Mom bait. They took the HQ bait.
Which meant the voice was close to Taewook. Close to HQ. Not near Mom.
Taewook didn’t look surprised. He looked tired. He added a 5th name to the board: _“Watcher.”_
Then he drew an arrow from Watcher → HQ.
*What We Know Now*
1. *Mom is clear.* The voice didn’t mention her. Didn’t react to her.
2. *Joon is still clear.* He drove Taewook to Mom’s and to HQ. He was listening to music the whole time. He still thinks I’m dead. He still thinks Taewook is breaking down.
3. *Chairman Kang is still clueless.* He thinks I’m at the bottom of the river. If he heard about the house, he’d be here with police already.
4. *The Watcher is good.* They saw Taewook at HQ without being seen. They knew he sent a text from a burner 20 minutes later.
I pointed at the board. “So it’s someone from work.”
“Or someone paid to watch work,” Taewook said. He sat next to me. Shoulder to shoulder again. “Either way, they’re not far.”
Taewook wrote everything down with a pen. No phone notes.
1. *Mom:* 2 men in a delivery van. Park across her street. 24/7. No contact. If anyone sits in a car watching her house for more than 10 minutes, we take their photo.
2. *HQ:* 1 man follows Taewook on foot after work. Not in a car. If someone follows the follower, we have them.
3. *Gangwon:* 1 trusted man goes in person. No ID. No money. He asks for the Old Lady by description: “short, scar on left hand, saved a girl from the river 5 years ago.” He doesn’t say Soyeon. He doesn’t say Kang. If she’s alive, we find her. If someone asks him why, we catch them too.
I looked at Joon’s name. “You’re sure? We’re not doing anything to him?”
Taewook’s jaw tightened. “I’m sure he didn’t send that text. But I can’t say that out loud. If Dad hears me protecting Joon, Dad will start digging. And if Joon is innocent, he’ll get hurt.”
I hated it. But I understood it.
That night, the safehouse was quiet again.
Joon dropped Taewook off at 9:07 PM. He said, “Boss, you should eat. You look sick.”
Taewook just nodded. “Long day, Joon. Go home to your wife.”
Joon left.
Mom kept her light on, like we agreed. A signal that she was safe.
And somewhere in the city, the Watcher was typing another message.
But this time, we weren’t guessing blind.
We had a net.
They wanted me dead twice.
Fine.
Let them come close enough to try.
Taewook blew out the candle. In the dark, he whispered:
“You’re still invisible. And invisible is the only way to survive when everyone wants you buried.”
I closed my eyes. For the first time in 4 days, I wasn’t dreaming of water.
I was dreaming of faces.
