*5:10 AM. Safehouse. Day 6.*
Taewook hadn’t slept.
The burner sat on the table between us, dark. Waiting.
He pushed a folded paper to me. One line in his handwriting.
_“She’s sick. Coughing blood. Doctor says two days.”_
“That’s the next lie,” he said. Voice hoarse. “We feed it to Joon.”
I stared at it. “You want him to think I’m dying?”
“I want the caller to move,” Taewook said. “Panicked people call the wrong person. And when they do, we catch them.”
*The Plan: Bleed Him Out*
Taewook wrote rules. No phones in the room.
*Move 1 - Look Broken*
7:00 AM. Taewook left with me in his head. Hair messy. Eyes red. Briefcase in hand.
He got in Joon’s car and said nothing for 5 minutes. Just stared out the window.
Then he set the burner on the seat.
“Answer it,” he said. “It’s the doctor.”
*Move 2 - Sound Dying*
7:15 AM. I called from the safehouse. Cloth over the mic.
Taewook put it on speaker.
Me: _“Boss… it’s bad. She coughed. There’s blood. The doctor said—”_ I stopped. Wet, shaky breath. Silence.
Taewook: _“…how long?”_
Me: _“Two days. Maybe less.”_ Click.
I didn’t cry. The quiet was worse.
*Move 3 - Go Quiet*
Taewook told Joon: “Han River.”
Joon’s hands tightened. “Boss… you shouldn’t—”
“Drive,” Taewook cut in.
He sat at the river 20 minutes. Back to the car. Shoulders down.
Joon didn’t touch his phone. Not once. Not while Taewook was watching.
*10:40 AM. Safehouse.*
Taewook came back fast. No briefcase.
He dropped the burner on the table.
40 minutes. Nothing.
My chest sank. “Maybe we were wrong.”
“Or he’s waiting to be alone,” Taewook said.
At 11:28 AM, it buzzed.
Same blocked number.
_“Blood? Nice try. She’s not sick. She’s with you in that house. Last chance: put her back in the river.”_
Taewook exhaled. Not relief. Confirmation.
“They bit,” he said. He circled Joon’s name on the board. Hard. Red. “He told someone after he dropped me off.”
*The Confrontation: 9:42 PM. Same Night.*
Joon came late. Groceries. Medicine. Shoulders slumped.
He set them down and wouldn’t meet Taewook’s eyes.
“Boss… you need to eat. You look—” His voice cracked.
Taewook shut the door. Locked it.
“Sit down, Joon.”
Joon froze. “Boss?”
“Now.”
Joon sat. Hands shaking.
Taewook put the burner on the table between them. Pressed play.
My voice filled the room. _“Boss… it’s bad. She coughed. There’s blood…”_
Joon’s face went white. “Boss, I—”
“Don’t,” Taewook said. Quiet. Dead. “You told someone. 40 minutes after I got out of your car. The caller knew. Only you heard that.”
Joon’s head dropped. “I didn’t mean to—”
“Who?” I stepped out from the bedroom.
Joon’s eyes snapped up. All the color drained from his face.
“You’re… you’re alive?” His voice broke.
“Yes,” I said. “Because of you. Almost dead. Twice.”
Joon broke. No more act.
“It was your ex,” he whispered. “From 5 years ago. The one from the village. He called me after you collapsed at 19. Said he still loved you. Said you remembered too much. That you’d ruin him if you told anyone about the river.”
Taewook’s jaw clenched. “So you told him where she was.”
Joon nodded, crying now. “He paid me. Said he’d give me half of your property if I helped him finish it, Boss. I was jealous. You had everything. I had nothing. He said it’d be easy. One more push.”
The room went silent.
He wasn’t the killer. He was the messenger. And he wanted blood money.
Taewook stood up. Walked to the board. Erased _???_.
Wrote: _Joon → Ex → Caller_.
“Your ex is the caller,” Taewook said. “The woman on the phone. She’s his sister. You gave her the location. You gave her the plan.”
Joon sobbed. “I didn’t know about her. I swear. I only told him. I thought he’d scare you, Boss. Not kill you.”
I looked at him. 5 years ago he drove me home. Held my hair when I threw up. Cried on the phone.
And he still sold me for half of Taewook’s name.
Taewook didn’t touch him. Didn’t yell.
“Get up,” he said. “You’re going to call him. Right now. From your phone. We’re done lying to him. Now he lies to us.”
*Orders: Use The Traitor*
Taewook wrote, fast.
1. *Joon:* Call your ex. Tell him it worked. Tell him I’m burying her tonight. Make him meet you.
2. *The Block:* 3 men surround the meet spot. No guns. No noise. We take him alive.
3. *Gangwon:* Our man holds the shop. If the sister shows, we have both.
Joon wiped his face. Picked up his phone with shaking hands.
Dialed.
Speaker on.
Ring. Ring.
Then a man’s voice. Familiar. From 5 years ago.
_“Is it done?”_
Joon looked at me. At Taewook. Then into the phone.
“Yeah,” he said. Voice hollow. “Come to the Han River. Midnight. Alone.”
Click.
Mom’s light was on. Safe.
And somewhere, my ex was smiling because he thought I was finally going under.
But I wasn’t bait anymore.
I was the trap.
Taewook sat next to me on the floor. Took my hand.
“Midnight,” he whispered. “We end this.”
