ONE

Tomorrow is a day Lora Carver has been looking forward to for weeks now

It’s her twentieth birthday and she is going to the same college with her longtime boyfriend, Fred Waverley who is already in college since last year since he was a year ahead of her

Lora never liked the fact that she’s still an high school student while Fred is already a college student

so she had make sure to pass well enough to go to Milas and her wish has come true when she checked her email to see her admission letter to the school

that was three weeks ago and now her twentieth birthday is tomorrow a big day it’s not just her birthday but also her best friend Sarah's birthday as well.

Lora was born with a golden spoon and has always enjoy the best things since she was born, she never for once had to work hard to get anything in her life.

Except that she wasn’t brilliant enough although she wasn’t that good with studies that doesn’t stop her parents from giving her all the luxurious things she ever asked for.

The Carvers and the Waverleys are family friends for like ages and both kids grew up together as friends and it was no surprise when they decide to go out together.

A year after they started their relationship her cousin Sean Carver had brought Sarah to their home back then and told them about her not having a home or anyone to go

Since the Carvers are philanthropists they decided to help her and accept her into their home to work as a maid

At first Lora hated the idea of Sarah coming into their home as everyone including Fred was treating her with much attention and care

Being the only child and only girl in the family she hated sharing the love and care she always get with another girl

But then one day she found out Sarah was a genius who could help with her studies though at first she hesitated going to her for help

when she finally did, she realize how good she was and decided to befriend her rather than be her enemy.

It was like a student and tutor relationship at first but as time goes on they became friends and ended up being best friends who tell each other everything

Since Sarah was an orphan they decided to celebrate her birthday on the same day as hers and she readily agreed and for two years now they’ve both celebrated their birthdays together.

they also assume Sarah’s age to be the same as hers although she seems a bit more older.

Sarah was admitted into the same class as hers and they always make sure to watch each other’s back.

Chess raise a royal blue dress and another held up a mulberry color short gown checking the two out

Lora shook her head in disapproval she took the blue dress and toss it aside, the girl holding it frown her face at this action of hers

“If you don’t love the dress no need to toss it away” Chess said and walk to pick up the dress

“What about the mulberry one?”

Lora pull the gown out of her hand and give it a long look checking to see if it’s to her preference she was about to toss it away when Chess quickly grab it away from her hands

“If you don’t like it just drop it on the bed no need to discard them like rags”

she said and brought out two new dresses from the big box on the bed, Lora stared at the dresses her eyes reading dissatisfaction

“Lora you need to pick one of these dresses for your birthday party tomorrow”

Alexandra said packing all the clothes back inside the box

“I know I need to choose an outfit for tomorrow but all these dresses am seeing here aren’t good enough for my eighteenth birthday party” she replied giving a pout

“Don’t be ridiculous Lora, these outfits are all made by Chess mum and in the whole of state no designers are as good as her so if all these aren’t good enough then what will?” Alexandra asked

“Since it’s your birthday I will let it pass and ask for another batch of dresses for you”

Chess said and set the box aside while she make a phone call for another dresses

Lora pick up the bar of chocolate from the table and munch on it as she wait for Chess to finish her call

“Well Lora, since you don’t like those dresses can I pick some of it there are few I love” Alexandra said with a low voice trying not to let Chess hear her

“Yeah sure don’t care” Lora replied and continue shoving the chocolate inside her mouth

Chess drop the call and look at Alexandra with a disapproved look, understanding why she’s giving her such look Alexandra shrugged and begin to pick up some clothes

“So has Sarah pick her own dress for the party”

Chess asked taking her gaze from Alexandra who doesn’t seems to care about the look she was giving her

“I don’t know mum said she will send her a box of dresses as well maybe she has found her right outfit” she said and continue on her snack

“Don’t you feel uncomfortable having to share your birthday with an orphan every year?” Lora arched her brows at her stopping her mouth from moving she drop the remaining chocolate losing interest in it

“I’ve told you to stop calling Sarah an orphan Chess, she’s my best friend and like a sister to me”

“But the fact is she’s not and you’ve given her a lot of authority to do whatever she wants to do”

“there’s nothing wrong with that after all she has never cross her limit with you” Alexandra chip in but got Chess disapproved looks again

“Look Lora this girl is a maid in your house the fact that you accepted her into your house without knowing anything about her is enough help already"

"You guys cloth and feed her you also take care of her education and you still allow her celebrate with you on your special days, I think it’s too much to do for a stranger you don’t know”

Chess concluded with a serious face and Lora break into a laugh seeing her stern stare

Chess is her friend for a long time now and she always think more than usual

Also she has never liked Sarah since she got to know her two years ago she always have one thing or the other to say about her and it’s not the good stuff

“I know you hate Sarah but you’ve got to understand she’s my best friend and a part of my family…”

“How is she a part of your family? Am sure she’s nothing good” Chess asked cutting her short

"well it appears Sean likes her so she just like a family”

Lora tease and almost share another laugher with Alexandra who was also trying to stop herself from bursting out

But the two just stare at Chess who was fuming holding a funny cute face, it’s no secret she likes Sean.

“If the other set of dresses doesn’t fit your taste then you might have nothing to wear for tomorrow’s party”

“Maybe I should ask for Fred’s opinion” Lora said and stood up to leave her eyes fill with excitement

“Must Fred always chose things for you? you literally let your whole life revolve around him” Chess said as a matter of fact

Lora ignore her words and hurry out of the room to meet Fred who was supposedly with Sean in his room.

Getting to Sean’s room she barge in without knocking

she enter the room and her eyes search for Fred ignoring the angry look she was getting from Sean who was just putting on a towel above his waist

she frown her face when she couldn’t see a sight of him

“Where is Fred?” she finally asked

“I don’t know am not your boyfriend’s keeper, just get out of my room I need my privacy” he replied and walk into the bathroom

Lora bang the door and continue her search for Fred he had told her thirty minute ago he was going to Sean’s room he wouldn't have left without informing her so that means he’s still in the house

she check everywhere she know he could be but still couldn’t find him, fed up with searching she decide to go back to her room to get her phone to call him.

She passes by Sarah’s room and thought of checking on her to see what outfit she picked for tomorrow

she get to the door and turn the knob opened without knocking as usual and luckily the door wasn’t locked like it used to

Lora don’t know why but Sarah has this habit of always locking her door anytime she’s inside the room and this is an habit Lora always find annoying since she hates knocking on the door before entering

The door was always locked so she has to knock every time she want to get into her room

But today it seems like she forgot to do so or maybe she isn’t in

Lora walk in and met a confusing scene both Sarah and Fred stood two feet apart and they both stare at her in shock

like they’ve just seen her ghost or something more terrifying she move closer to them questioning

“What’s wrong with you two?” she asked her eyes searching them through

“Lora! What are you doing here?” Fred asked and put on a forced smile

"I should be asking you that, what are you doing in Sarah’s room I’ve been looking everywhere for you”

she said and move closer to him coming between him and Sarah while Sarah move back from them turning away

“Oh right… I was just helping her with some stuff” he replied with his voice trembling a little

“What stuff are you helping her with?” she throw and look at from one person to another

They both stood speechless without an answer observing their silent Lora gave a disapprove look as she let go of her hold on Fred

She look upset at Sarah who stood helpless and was giving Fred a glare like she was urging him to say something

“Are you guys planning a surprise for me tomorrow?” she asked and release the frown on her face turning it into a grin.

The two stare at her confused for seconds and nodded at her words also letting out their smile

“Of course that’s why we are together” Sarah said since she entered the room and nudged at Fred who in turn nodded his head immediately and grab Lora’s hands

“Yes Lora, Sarah and I are planning a surprise for you tomorrow and we don’t want to ruin the surprise by letting you found out what it is, so why don’t we go outside and talk”

He suggested and drag her out of the room, Sarah watch the two leave and her countenance changed to fury as she clinch her hands in a fist.

Once outside the room Lora drag Fred to her room to help chose a dress for her, he picked a pink dress with a flower design on it and Lora decided she will be wearing that for her birthday tomorrow

She ask Fred to stay over the night and he agreed without any objection it wasn’t his first time sleeping over at her house anyway

Although Lora’s parent were not really comfortable with it they had no choice but to let her do as she pleases.

Lora woke up in the middle of the night her throat feeling so dry she groan a bit and call Fred to help her go get some water downstairs

She called him twice but receive no answer from the other side of the bed

she sit up and turn to the other side of the bed where Fred was lying and felt the bed with her hand and it was empty she reach out to turn on the light

Lora saw the bathroom light on and the sound of water running made her believe he was inside the bathroom

“I'm going downstairs to get some water” she informed him before leaving the room

She get to the kitchen and decide not to switch on the light since it wasn’t too dark inside the room she headed to the fridge and pour herself a full glass of water

Just as she was about to take a drink she heard a rumbling sound from somewhere around the room she turn to see what sound is it but couldn’t see the room clearly enough

Ignoring it she finish drinking and left the room few steps away from the room

She heard the same noise again and stop in her tracks, a little scared of what it might be she walk back quietly to the kitchen holding her slippers as a defense

Tip toeing she put on the lights and move quickly to hit whatsoever was making the sound

she let out a yell and throw her slippers at it in fright, she waited for a moment and heard no sound she slowly open her eyes and stare at the two in front of her

“What…what on earth are you two doing here?” she asked trying to caught her breath

Sarah and Fred both look a bit frightened by her presence

Sarah who was sitting on the counter quickly jump down and pull the red object under her feet with a trembling body, without his shirt on Lora could see his restless muscles

“you guys must be working on my surprise right” she suddenly said and smile brightly at them

The two look at her in wonder but then nodded their heads to affirm her assumption, she gave patted their shoulders and continue her walk back to her room

Once she turn her back against them the smile on her face disappeared, her smile turned to a sour expression she lie down slowly on her bed and let her brain do some thinking

Back then in the kitchen she has seen the smudge on Sarah’s lips and Fred’s swollen lips, it was sure caused by kissing for a long time

The ruffled hair and the panties on the floor that got pulled by Sarah made her heart run wild for minutes

she grab her clothes in her hands trying not to let herself go crazy thinking about what might have taken place she let herself breath out many times trying to let go of her present feeling

“maybe I am thinking way too much, there is no way that happened” she said to her herself trying to calm her rising nerves.

She grab her pillow and hug it to herself but the thought of the two of them doing something horrible behind her back keep coming to her head and she had a trouble time getting back to sleep

After twenty minutes has passed she sprang up from the bed and rush into the bathroom she on the shower on her head letting the water pour to calm her trembling body

Feeling wet enough she get out of the shower to the room to change her clothes she met Fred already inside the room he rush to her and hold her with so much care in his eyes

“What happened Lora? Are you hurt?” he asked worried

Lora look at him and smile recovering herself with the way Fred cares for her there is no way he’s cheating on her with Sarah

She must have really assume things and let it take control of her mind she rest her head on his shoulders and let him lead her to change her clothes and they both later slept holding each other in a warm embrace.
