I've always had a gloomy disposition, always wearing a long face and dressing entirely in black, looking like a lifeless corpse.
That is why, ever since I was little, everyone around me, classmates, teachers, relatives, even my own parents, loathed me.
Only my older sister always stood up for me unwaveringly.
Whenever I got into trouble and was about to be punished by my teachers or parents, it was always my sister who voluntarily stepped forward to take the punishment in my place.
Back then, I did not understand why she did this. I simply thought she was foolish.
When faced with my jeers and sneers, my sister never minded.
She would only hold me gently and say, "Because I'm your older sister, you're my little sister. It's what older sisters do, isn't it? Of course, I have to protect my little sister."
I did not understand what that meant, but since she was willing to take the blame for me every time, I was perfectly happy to take the easy way out.
After another incident where I got into trouble and set the principal's office on fire, my sister told me to swap clothes with her.
She put on my black dress and was punished standing under the scorching sun for three hours, while I wore her white dress and sat on the parallel bars nearby, swinging my legs and grinning as I watched her nearly collapse from exhaustion and dehydration.
The next day, she gave me an oil painting.
In the painting, I am wearing a white dress sitting on the parallel bars, smiling so wide my eyes crinkle at the corners.
She said, "Lara, I hope that one day you will be able to laugh truly from the bottom of your heart."
I reached out to stroke the oil painting resting on my nightstand, and swore to myself, "Sister, it's my turn to protect you now. Don't you worry, every single bastard that hurt you, not a single one of them is getting away from me."
After I threw that violent fit, no one in the villa dared to provoke me anymore, just as I expected.
Even Billie would take a detour when he saw me.
A few days later, Carl had a sour look on his face and said his first words to me, "Tomorrow is my mother's birthday banquet. If you don't want to attend, just—"
"Why wouldn't I go? Of course I'm attending.”
Carl's already sour expression darkened even further.
"You can go to the banquet, but don't act crazy. If you do, you won't just shame the Lewis family. You'll shame your mother's family too."
Before long, the day of the banquet was here.
When I arrived at the venue, I spotted Marjorie right away. She had a big smile on her face and was standing right beside Mrs. Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis held Marjorie's hand and introduced her to the other guests with a look of loving kindness.
"Marjorie and my Carl are childhood sweethearts. They've been close since they were little, and I've always thought of her as my daughter-in-law."
One guest caught sight of me, and forced an awkward laugh. "Haha, but your daughter-in-law, Sarah, is really nice too. She's filial and beautiful."
Mrs. Lewis had clearly spotted me too, but she just rolled her eyes in disdain, and spoke even louder, "She's an orphan who lost both her parents. Only my kind-hearted Carl would marry her, and she's so rude and unruly."
The smile on my lips grew wider. I snatched the microphone right from the host and answered Mrs. Lewis.
"You're absolutely right, Mother-in-law. Back when the Lewis family was on the brink of bankruptcy, it was entirely my family's fortune that pulled you through the crisis. But now that I've married into the Lewis family, all of my family's assets naturally belong to the Lewis family too.
"Even if Carl wants to carry on an affair behind my back with his childhood sweetheart, I, as his legal wife, should be gracious enough to even prepare the bed for their little tryst, shouldn't I?"
A wave of shocked murmurs broke out among the guests, and Carl's face went livid.
