Chapter 4

643 Words
Mrs. Lewis, furious and flustered, stomped her foot and pointed at me, snapping, "What nonsense are you spouting? When has our family ever coveted your birth family's few measly assets? And this talk of an affair, Carl and Marjorie are completely innocent. Nothing happened between them!" My face immediately hardened. I grabbed a glass of wine at random and flung it straight into her face. "Isn't this exactly what you rotten old hag meant? Why pretend now? Do you really think I'm still the same doormat I used to be, that you can push me around however you please?" Mrs. Lewis screamed. Always so obsessed with saving face, she desperately wanted to just faint on the spot. Carl glared at me furiously, then quickly led Mrs. Lewis away to change her clothes. The whole crowd backed far away from me, none of them could understand how Mrs. Lewis, once so meek and gentle, had suddenly turned so fierce. But contrary to her usual behavior, Marjorie walked right up to me. She wore a smug, challenging expression, leaned in close to my ear and said, "Sarah, tell me... if both of us fell into a river right now, who would Carl save?" As soon as she finished speaking, she grabbed my hand and dragged me straight into the outdoor swimming pool beside us. The moment we hit the water, she started screaming for help at the top of her lungs, "Carl, save me!" I sneered, grabbed Marjorie by the hair, and shoved her head straight down under the water, holding it there hard. "Aren't you trying to frame me for your murder? Wouldn't it be such a waste if I didn't give you what you want?" Marjorie never in a million years expected I would dare attack her in front of so many people. Her weak cries for help, which had originally just been an act, immediately turned completely genuine. "Help! Help!" Carl had just finished helping Mrs. Lewis change, and the moment he stepped back into the venue he saw this scene. His eyes blew wide, and without a second thought he dove into the pool to save Marjorie. "Sarah, you're insane! Let go right now!" I spun around and kicked him hard in the groin. While he was hunched over in agony, I shoved his head under the water too, holding it down tight. "You can go to hell too, you bastard!" Unfortunately, in the end, security swarmed in and pulled Marjorie and Carl out of the water. Marjorie coughed frantically, panicking, then stared at me in abject terror. "Sarah, why did you push me into the water and even try to drown me?" An even angrier Carl pulled out his phone to call the police. I swept my gaze across the crowd to where Billie stood. "Tell everyone the truth!" Billie's eyelashes fluttered rapidly. He said, "Mommy pushed Auntie Marjorie into the water." I let out a bitter, mocking snort from deep in my chest, then casually pressed play on the voice recording on my phone. Marjorie's provocative words echoed through the entire banquet hall. The color drained from Marjorie's face in an instant. The guests, who had only just been gossiping and pointing fingers at me, immediately changed their tune. "So Marjorie deliberately set Sarah up? What a smug, shameless mistress." "Even her own biological son is taking the mistress' side. Of course, she'd be that bold. No wonder Sarah, who was always so gentle before, suddenly snapped like this. When your husband, child, and mother-in-law all take the mistress' side, anyone would be driven crazy by it." Hearing these blunt, unhidden taunts, Marjorie simply covered her face and ran out of the hall sobbing. "Marjorie!" "Auntie Marjorie!" Carl and Billie chased after her as she ran out. The guests looked at me with even more pity in their eyes.
