I immediately began shaking my head, “How is this possible?”
Holy mates… Did this just happen? Am I mated to two brothers?! TWO?! Oh, but not any two, Demetrius AND Matthias Kane?! How could this be? I have never heard of this happening in our entire existence.
Now, there were two ways one can become a werewolf, though. One can either be born of werewolf parents, also known as a purebred. Or you can have folks that don’t even have wolf ancestry and those wolves are called lab-mutts. Sure, they may not have been created in a lab, but they were given that name by a crazed scientist who was bitten by a rogue wolf and ended up creating an army of mutts himself. Ever since then, rogues have had a bad reputation. So have mutts, though it's not their fault; the fault lies on whomever created them.
Despite that, I have never heard of a wolf having two mates, and to be honest, I did not like that idea either. I thought of myself as being a loyal person and when I thought of myself as having a soul mate, I only thought of having one soul mate ever; just one mate, not two. My heart was racing just at the thought of being mated to one of these specimens of a human being. But then again, I also felt sheer terror for Matthias Kane. All I had to do was reject him and Demetrius would just be my rightful mate… right? I felt a pang in my heart at just the thought of it. I had a feeling that the choice may be difficult. Or maybe the choice didn't have to be difficult.
And I did also think about what if I didn't reject one of them... What if I kept them both as mates? Would they agree? Could they handle it? Most importantly, could I handle 2 alpha mates; whom were brothers nonetheless? I wasn't entirely sure, but I did feel a bit turned on by the idea.
“Perfect, off to the dungeon you go. Matthias Kane will have no mates. No weaknesses.”
And just then, I was startled out of my thoughts. It's almost as if a record player was playing this bizarre moment then, bam, someone immediately put it to a halt. And that someone was Matthias Kane. My attention was then reverted to Matthias. I was immediately turned off as if he threw cold water on me.
“You wouldn’t dare!” Demetrius shouted at him.
“Oh, but I would, brother. Or else I would have you too placed in the dungeon.”
“Then reject her, she’ll still be my mate.”
“I will do as I please, Demetrius, and I ordered for her to be in the dungeon. Jase! Escort her” He points at me as if I was a piece of garbage on the side of the road, “And let me know once it’s done. And if my brother argues, put him in the dungeon with her.”
“Matthias, I will fight for her. What you’re doing isn’t right.”
“She is a rogue! I’ve been more than merciful.”
The wolf named Jase, was definitely not as big as Matthias nor Demetrius, but definitely bigger than the gamma twins. I knew Jase then was Matthias’ beta. If I thought Matthias was scarred up, Jase definitely had battle scars on display… He had a huge one on his bicep, a few on his face. His demeanor was just as Matthias; powerful, vengeful, and filled with animosity.
I’ve never heard of an alpha so ruthless. One that has his mate sent to the dungeon? He really must have been as maniacal as the rumors claimed. Or was there more to him than the rumors? At that moment, I remembered what my dad had said about Matthias as an alpha. My dad actually liked his ruling style over the pack. My dad was traditional. My dad stated that if one ruled a pack with an iron fist, one would respect and even fear the alpha so much as not to challenge him or her. He believed it was a way to maintain harmony in the pack, but my father also liked it when an alpha would take into consideration the opinion of his people and do what is best for the pack.
Jase then grabbed me by the arm I immediately fell to the ground.
I tried to squirm away from him, “Let me go.”
“Matthias…” Demetrius pushed.
Matthias began to look furious, “Tell me brother, are you willing to wage war with your own flesh and blood over this rogue?”
Demetrius clenched his jaw and looked at me and back to his brother, “I-“
Matthias immediately cut off Demeterius’ next words, “Think wisely, little brother, because neither my pack nor I will be made fools.”
“Made fools? You’re not even thinking logically! Damn it, Matthias!”
“If you’re done with your temper tantrum now… Jase, head to the dungeons, now. And if he gives you a hard time, he and his gammas will go with her. That’s an order.”
“You got it, boss.”
Jase threw me over his shoulder.
“You guys really dig this caveman mentality of throwing a woman over your shoulder, bullshit, a little too much,” I grumbled.
Jase began to take me down a dark hallway.
I heard Demetrius huff and puff. It really did fill me with indescribable warmth in my heart. Demetrius was fighting for me like a mate should. He honored our mate connection and was willing to fight his brother for me. Okay, maybe not fully, physically fought him for me just yet, but he really stood up to his older brother. But a question in my mind lingered. Why didn’t Matthias reject me then?
Jase seemed to go further into the basement or dungeon, as Matthias called it. It definitely looked dark and felt cold the further we went down the never ending hallway.
“If you think I’m gonna sit here and beg you for mercy, I won’t,” I finally stated to the beta wolf known as Jase.
Jase remained silent.
“You guys probably think of me as some mutt, right? That’s why both packs had eyes on me? Well I’m not. I’m a pure bread; daughter of Arlen Athanasiou of the-“
“The Atlantis pack,” He finished.
“Ye-Yes, you’ve heard of my dad?”
He seemed gentler with me because once we reached the cell, he slowly raised me upright and placed me on the ground.
The ground was cold, dirt-tinged stone, and the bars on the cell were silver. I could tell because I felt the vibrations of it. If I touched it, it would burn my skin.
He nodded, “Sorry for your loss.”
Tears threatened to spill from my eyes. Instead, I just nodded quickly.
Jase pressed a button on the wall and the bars closed to my cell.
I couldn’t help but back up and lie against the wall and let the tears flow down.
How did I get myself into this mess? This would never have happened if you were still here, Papa. I miss you so much. Everything was so much easier when you were here. I wish you were still here, Papa. I just don’t know how to fix this, all of this. I got myself in a bit of a situation, Papa. Please look over me and guide me. I need you right now.
The tears continued to flow, and it seemed I fell asleep. Because when I woke up, I was woken up in the most wicked way. I was awoken to a sharp pain that traveled all over my body. I realized that it was a cold pressure washer. I tried to gasp for air as I jumped up. I was okay to put pressure on my leg again after I kind of got rest.
“Now, now, you didn’t think I forgot about you, did you, Rogue?”
I was shivering from the cold. This bastard was trying to make me suffer. I was so frustrated at my situation, I couldn’t help but scream as I ran for the bars, but before I could scream, Matthias blasted me with the water again.
“You coward!’ I screamed when he shut it off again. “You wanna show yourself as a big and bad, alpha? Pop the cell open. Come on, Coward!”
He stood there, squinting at me, then began laughing.
“A rogue trying to call the shots, that’s cute, kitten. Your words hold no weight here.”
“Let’s see about that, MATE,” I stood tall then, “I, Milah Athanasiou, daughter of the late Alpha Arlen Athanasiou reject-“
Matthias immediately dropped the hose and popped the cell and made his way to me.
I didn't know how I mustered up such strength, but at that moment I felt my inner wolf even puff out her chest. Maybe it was the strength of my dad. I just felt very alpha-like myself, in the moment. I knew I needed to stand my ground and respect myself as a fellow alpha and a respected potential partner. I shot out my knee and it made contact right with his family jewels. That made him drop to his knees, which leveled us eye to eye; he breathed heavily for a few moments.
I lowered my voice as I spoke to him, “You don’t want to reject me, you don’t want me to reject you, but I would rather die than be your toy to torment Matthias.” I was looking him right in the eye, “I’m your mate, you will respect me. I’m no damn mutt, and I’m not a rogue.”
This time he got closer to me and lowered his voice, “You don’t get it. You’re safer if we’re distant, but I have to always have eyes on you. You’re in danger, Milah.”
I scrunched my eyebrows, “So far the only threat has been both you and your brother’s men.”
“Do you think it’s a coincidence that they ex-communicated you when your dad died?”
“Don’t you dare bring my father into this.”
“Damn it, Milah. Listen to me, we don’t have time. Don’t say anything to anyone. I trust no one, right now. My men are doing more digging. Just give me some time.”
I couldn’t help but look into his blue eyes and scan them. I wasn’t sure if he was telling me the truth or if he was completely insane. But I did see one thing in his eyes; desperation. Could something really have Matthias Kane this spooked? Was it because of the bond? Was it even real?
