Epilogue

527 Words
*Two years later… “No, no, no, that’ll never work.” My assistant pokes her head into my office and points at her clipboard. I nod at her and wrap up my phone call. “I have to go. Just have him call me when they sort out the details.” As I hang up, I notice a missed call on my cell phone. Glancing at the door to make sure my assistant isn’t within hearing range, I quickly call the number back. The ringing comes from behind the door. That’s weird. Just then, my mother enters the room, grinning. “Mom! What are you doing here?” “Hi, Charlotte! I just wanted to check on what color dress you’re wearing tonight.” Laughing, I roll my eyes. “Mom, it’s okay if we wear the same color dress.” “I know, but this is your big day! I want to make sure everything is perfect.” I smile at her. “It will be.” “Your dad still has no idea. I can’t wait to see his face!” “Me neither. Did you get him the shirt I ordered for him?” “Yes!” I suddenly see tears welling up in her eyes. “I can’t believe this is finally happening! I’m going to be a grandma!” “Shh. My assistant doesn’t know yet.” “She doesn’t?” “She will soon. Things have been so crazy here at the firm, especially since I’m taking maternity leave in a few months. I wanted to take care of everything before I leave.” Sighing, I lean back in my chair. “Who knew having a baby was so much work before the baby is even born?” “It’s going to be the most incredible experience of your life. I’m happy for you two.” My assistant walks over to my desk, placing the clipboard down and pointing to the line where she needs my signature. I nod at her and she leaves the room. “I’m pretty sure Courtney is going to quit.” “Don’t be ridiculous. She’s been your assistant for almost 2 years now. She knows there’s no better job out there, especially at the rate you’re paying her.” I chuckle. “Well, I have to go. My hairdresser awaits.” “Sure. I’ll see you guys tonight.” “Of course.” My mom leaves and I read through the paperwork Courtney left for me. But before I can finish the second page, my husband walks through the door. “Hello, handsome. What are you doing here?” “Hello, my beautiful wife. Working late again, I’m guessing?” He offers me one of the cups he’s holding. “I figured I’d bring you some coffee.” I smiled, stood up and went over to him. “You’re perfect.” “I just got off the phone with Hannah. She said we can’t arrive until 7 p.m. on the dot.” He chuckles, and I groan. “How is it we can’t even be on time for our own baby shower?” “If I can remember correctly, letting her plan this was Mrs. Garcia.” “Next time, stop me.” He laughs. “Did your mom get the shirts?” “Yes! I can’t wait for my father to put his on and see the word “Grandpa” across the front.” “It was a great idea, babe. He’ll love it.” “I love you.” I bite my lip. “I love you, too.” “I’ll go now.” “I’ll be home soon, okay?” “You better, or I’ll come back and drag you home myself.” I laughed. “I’m counting on it.”
