Chapter 12

2449 Words
The heavy, suffocating silence inside the mountain cabin was broken only by the crackle of the logs burning in the fireplace. Açelya lay alone on the bed, battling the cold sweat wrapping around her body and the fragmented, hallucinatory thoughts brought on by her high fever. Ateş's stern voice still echoed in her ears, and the scent of his presence lingered in the air. With great effort, she forced her eyes open to gaze at the dark corners of the room. The fever blazed through her entire body, and the cast on her fingers made her hand ache even more. Never in her life had she felt so helpless, so backed into a corner. She just wanted to live like a young girl, chase her own dreams, take photographs, and breathe without fear under anyone's thumb. But instead, both sides of her world—her own family tangled in illegal dealings, and Ateş Kılıç, the terrifying mafia boss trying to claim her—had turned her life into an unbearable prison. Curled up against the pillow, she began to sob again, though she barely had the strength left to cry. Tears slipped naturally down her cheeks, her lips trembling. Any sound coming from behind the door brought her heart dangerously close to stopping from sheer terror. She no longer knew how she would escape this house, or what awaited her back home if she ever did. At the same time, miles away from the mountain cabin, the sparks of confrontation were already igniting in the dark, cold streets of the city. Inside the spacious and luxurious study of the Demir mansion, the tension was so thick that oxygen seemed scarce. Akin Demir paced the room in fury, a glass shattering against the wall. The red veins in his eyes reflected the agony he felt for his daughter's pain and the burning hatred he held for his enemy. Caner and Erdem stood silently in the face of the older man's terrifying state, trying to map out their next move. Altan stood in a corner with his hands shoved into his pockets, staring out the window at the night. A thousand thoughts spun through his mind all at once: on one side, his niece Açelya's suffering and her captivity under Ateş; on the other, his wife Sinem's pure and innocent nature; and right in the middle of it all, İrem, whose touches still burned against his skin as she clawed her way into his life at every opportunity. Altan felt like a bird trapped in a cage, suffocating between a brotherly duty, family honor, and forbidden passions. The harsh, sudden ring of the telephone abruptly shattered the deep silence of the room. Everyone turned their gaze to the phone vibrating loudly on the desk. Altan stepped forward heavily, lifted the receiver, and brought it to his ear. The familiar, ice-cold, and arrogant voice from the other end filled the entire room: — "If you have even an ounce of courage, step out and face me. Stop fighting from behind the scenes like cowards," Ateş said harshly. Altan's teeth clenched, his facial muscles tightening: — "We aren't the cowards, you bastard! What do you mean by kidnapping our girl?!" Ateş laughed with mocking amusement from the other side: — "You should have acted like men and taken care of your daughter. Do you have any idea what that girl went through in your house—how your nephew Cem tortured her and put her through a psychological breakdown, Altan?" When Altan heard those words, he almost froze in place. Cem breaking Açelya's fingers, the savagery inside the house flashed through his mind for a fraction of a second. Still, he refused to give Ateş the satisfaction: — "We are her family, not you! We'll handle whatever happened to Açelya ourselves. Return our daughter immediately!" Ateş replied as if issuing a strict command: — "I'm not. Now listen to me: if you truly care about that girl, be in front of the old Warehouse X on the outskirts of the city tonight at 10 o'clock. Man to man, let's settle this face-to-face. We're ending this tonight." The line went dead. Altan drew in a sharp breath as he stared at the phone screen. Akin and the others immediately gathered around him. — "What does he say? Is he giving Açelya back?" Akin asked impatiently. Altan shook his head: — "No... He wants a showdown. We have to go to Warehouse X tonight. We don't have a choice." At that exact moment, on the other side of the mansion, a completely different drama was unfolding. İrem headed back toward Altan's office carrying a cup of coffee. She knew very well how to turn Altan's weak spots, the friction between him and Sinem in their marriage, and the tension weighing on the brothers to her own advantage. Her goal wasn't just finding a refuge; she wanted to use this chaos to completely win Altan over, push Sinem out of the picture, and sink her roots deep into this powerful family. When she walked into the office, she saw Altan preparing to speak with his brothers. Seeing İrem, Altan immediately narrowed his eyes: — "İrem, didn't I tell you to go to your room and rest? My head is already splitting, I don't have time to deal with you." Without losing her composure, İrem approached the desk with smooth, calculating steps. She placed the cup down and brushed against Altan's lapel as if nothing was wrong: — "I know, my love... I see how heavy this is for you. Açelya's kidnapping, the pressure on the family, and on top of all that, Sinem meeting her ex behind your back... Everything is piling up. But I'm here. I will never leave you alone." Altan paused for a moment after İrem's words. Sinem meeting her ex-boyfriend, even if by chance, had pricked his masculine pride and sparked a massive fight at home. İrem struck precisely at that weak spot, slowly tearing down Altan's defensive walls. Altan reached out to grab her wrist and push her away, but with a swift motion, İrem straddled his lap. Wrapping her legs around his sides, she slung her arms around his neck. The perfume radiating from İrem's skin and her brazen touches accelerated the blood pulsing through Altan's veins. No matter how hard he tried to hold back, the dark passion and exhaustion inside him weakened his willpower. — "İrem... you've really lost your mind," Altan's voice came out thick and strained. — "This isn't the time, get out of here." Leaning in close to his lips, İrem whispered: — "The time is right now, Altan... Because no one else can give you this kind of relief. Sinem doesn't understand you; she can't see the wild side inside you. But I love that darkness of yours." These words shattered Altan's final barrier of resistance. He could hold back no longer. He crashed his lips onto İrem's with a wild, ravenous, and angry hunger. He grabbed her by the hair, forcing her head back, and began kissing and biting her neck and shoulders with fierce passion. Enjoying his reaction, İrem swiftly unbuttoned his shirt with nimble fingers, running her hands across his chest. The air in the room heated up instantly as both individuals forgot reason and plunged straight into the whirlpool of forbidden passion. Yet, the faint sound of footsteps echoing from outside the door snapped them back to reality. İrem quickly pulled back and straightened her clothes. Taking a deep breath, Altan stood straight behind his desk. The door swung open to reveal Sinem. Without noticing anything amiss, Sinem just looked at the tension on her husband's face and said softly: — "Altan, I just... wanted to check if everything was okay. Did you want something to eat before heading to the warehouse tonight?" Controlling himself with great effort, Altan replied in a cold tone: — "There's no need, Sinem. Go back to your room. İrem is leaving anyway." İrem shot Sinem a scheming, victorious glance as she hurried out of the room. Crushed by her husband's harsh demeanor, Sinem lowered her head and left. Left alone, Altan slammed his hand against the mirror and cursed himself, but the mistakes made could no longer be undone. Back at the mountain cabin, the chill of the night had settled over the mountain peaks. When Ateş checked on Açelya's room, he found that she had curled up, pulling the duvet all the way over her head. As he stepped closer to the bed, he noticed the sweat beads trickling down her forehead and how bright red her face was. Her body was burning like a furnace from the high fever. — "Açelya? Açelya, wake up," Ateş spoke in a concerned tone. Açelya opened her eyes heavily, her vision blurred. Influenced by the delirium of the fever, she smiled and muttered: — "Take me... home... please..." Pressing his hand against her forehead and feeling the intense heat of the fever, Ateş frowned: — "Açelya, you have a fever, you're burning up." With the intoxicating haze of the fever, Açelya shook her head and smiled bitterly: — "Just like... burning from your love..." Ateş froze for a split second at this unexpected sentence, followed by a strange, soft smile forming on his lips: — "So you've gone crazy enough to fall in love with your enemy, little girl." Açelya immediately shook her head, her voice trembling: — "No... I'm not in love with you... I'm just... freezing. I'm freezing so much, Ateş." Ateş couldn't wait any longer. With a single motion, he lifted Açelya from the bed and scooped her up into his arms. Weakly, Açelya wrapped her arms around Ateş's neck for support. Ateş carried her straight into the warm bathroom and set her down beside the large bathtub. — "You can't get into the water with your clothes on," Ateş stated seriously. Weakly opening her eyes, Açelya tried to protest: — "Stop... what are you doing?" However, when Ateş began unbuttoning her shirt, Açelya covered her chest with her hands, blushing deeply from shame: — "Ateş... please..." Ateş's expression remained completely steady; he harbored no passion or ill intent toward her at that moment, purely trying to save her life. Without letting his gaze drop to her body even once, he stripped off her wet clothes and set them aside. — "I'm freezing... you're going to freeze me to death..." Açelya shivered violently. The moment Açelya stepped into the freezing water, she let out a sharp cry from the sudden shock: — "I'm freezing! It's too cold, Ateş, please get me out of here!" — "Endure it for a minute," Ateş replied in a firm yet composed tone. — "I can't endure it! It hurts!" Looking straight into her eyes, Ateş answered coolly: — "You've endured things far worse than this, little girl. You can handle this too." Açelya lifted her head, looking up into his face with tear-filled eyes. Ateş had sat down right on the edge of the tub, refusing to leave her alone. After she stayed beneath that ice-cold water for a full five minutes, Açelya's voice was barely a whisper: — "Ateş... please, get me out..." Ateş turned off the tap instantly, grabbed a large, thick towel, wrapped the girl up, and scooped her back into his arms. Glancing at the wall clock, he saw it was nearing 10 PM. The time for the confrontation with the Demir family was arriving. He laid Açelya down on the bed and pulled the covers over her: — "Açelya, put on the clean clothes I left for you and rest. A doctor will be here in five minutes. I have business to take care of, but I'll be back. And pull yourself together—I've missed that stubborn, mischievous side of you," he said, giving her a wink. Açelya stared after him in absolute astonishment. The darkness of the night had draped over the abandoned Warehouse X on the city outskirts. The cold wind rattled the warehouse's rusted iron doors, casting a terrifying silence over the surroundings. Outside the warehouse, the two enemy factions—the Demir family and Ateş's men—stood face-to-face. The moment Akin Demir stepped out of his vehicle, his hands trembled with rage as he strode forward. Caner and Erdem flanked him on both sides, ready to draw their weapons at any second. Altan stood a bit further back, watching the situation closely. Caner asked impatiently: — "Why did he call us here?! Is he going to return Açelya, or is he playing games again?" Altan shook his head: — "I doubt it... His voice on the phone sounded entirely different." Shouting, Akin pushed to the front: — "Then for what purpose did he bring us to this wasteland?! Where is my daughter?!" Right at that moment, Ateş Kılıç and his close men emerged from the darkness with firm, confident strides. The long black coat Ateş wore billowed in the wind, and the terrifying coldness in his eyes challenged the men standing before him. Stepping forward, Ateş stopped and offered a critical, sarcastic smirk: — "As-salamu alaykum, Mr. Demir." Unable to hold back, Akin rushed forward: — "Shut your mouth! Where is my daughter, tell me!" With his hands shoved casually into his pockets, Ateş replied with total ease: — "Your daughter is safe... In fact, believe me, she's in a much safer place than she'd ever be in your luxury mansion." Narrowing his eyes, Erdem shouted: — "What kind of nonsense are you babbling, bastard?!" Hardening his expression, Ateş continued: — "I'm saying nobody broke her fingers there like they did in your house, nobody slapped her. There, she eats her hot meals, rests, and sleeps. I'm providing the protection you failed to give her." Taking a step forward, Altan cut in with a stern voice: — "Our daughter is none of your business, Ateş. Hand Açelya over to us, and let's end this here." Locking his eyes onto Altan's, Ateş replied with absolute resolve: — "I'm not giving her back. End of story." The moment those two words—*"I'm not"*—lingered in the air, the simultaneous sounds of weapons locking clicked from both sides. Guards stepping out from behind the iron doors aimed their guns straight at one another. In the heart of the dark night, a massive clash capable of spilling blood at any second had become inevitable. Two families, two enemies, and caught right in the middle—an innocent girl, Açelya, burning in the fires of both sides... And the end of this war was still a long way off.
