Chapter 2: Playing with Fire

Third-Person POV The atmosphere at the breakfast table was thick with tension. Ersoy Bozkurt, the patriarch of the family, sipped his tea slowly but thoughtfully, his piercing eyes scanning his sons. "Good morning, Bozkurt clan," Aslan announced as he walked in. Ersoy looked at his youngest son, his brow arching. "To what do we owe this sudden burst of good corporate humor?" "I guess the big news hasn't reached you yet, Father," Polat sneered, a mocking smile playing on his lips. "I am well aware," Ersoy replied coldly. "The news of Engin Bozkurt’s death has apparently made its way to all of you." Acar chimed in, "Our only inside source is dead. Do you have a plan to handle this, Mr. Ersoy?" "I don't. But do you?" Ersoy countered. "You are the one running this family." "Yes, our dear older brother Acar is the one running things," Polat interjected. "And you made a massive blunder, brother." "I wouldn't call it a blunder," Acar shot back, straightening his posture. "Our father is a visionary. He knew I could run this family far better than you ever could." "Oh, did you run it so well that Engin ended up dead?" Ersoy’s voice cut through the bickering like ice. Aslan shrugged. "Mr. Ersoy, I see you're upset about your nephew's death, but let's face reality—the man was an i***t. He walked straight into a surveillance zone just to steal Ateş Kılıç's merchandise." "And the one who gave him that brilliant order was none other than our smart brother, Acar," Polat barked, turning to his father. "It's time to wake up to reality, Father. It's time for a change of guard at the head of the table." Acar let out a sharp, condescending laugh. "And suppose there is a change? Who is he going to give my seat to? You?" Ersoy slammed his hand lightly on the table, silencing them. "Polat is right, Acar. I have decided to make a change. From this moment on, Polat sits at the head of the table." Polat stood up instantly, taking his father's hand, kissing it, and placing it to his forehead in a sign of deep respect. "I will prove to you that you made the right choice, Father." "We certainly hope so," Aslan muttered. "Then let it be official," Ersoy declared. Acar stood up from the table, his eyes burning with resentment. "I highly doubt you can manage this empire with the same wisdom I did. But regardless, good luck." He stormed out of the dining room. Polat looked at his remaining brother and laughed darkly. "Don't you worry. I am going to expand our business, strengthen our grip, and put an end to those who think they rule these streets." Açelya's POV After finishing my book, I decided to sketch. Honestly, what else was there to do in this prison of a house? I wanted to go outside, but Uncle Altan had warned me that we were in danger, which explained why the estate was crawling with heavily armed bodyguards. Suddenly, there was a soft knock on my door. "Can I come in?" Aunt Sevda asked, peeking her head through the door. "Of course, Auntie, come on in." "Here, eat this," she said, handing me a plate. "Deniz prepared it especially for you. You didn't eat a single thing last night, nor this morning." "Thank you, Auntie, but I really don't have an appetite," I sighed. "Just eat a few bites for our sake. Especially after your hospital visit yesterday." I took the plate reluctantly. "Alright. Aunt Sevda... I need to talk to you about something." "What is it, my lamb?" "You know about my father and uncles' business, right? You understand how things work around here. It's about Cem. He's been acting so strange lately... like he's plotting something behind our backs." Sevda froze for a moment. "I thought I was the only one who noticed that." "Thank God, so you see it too! Do you have any idea what he's up to?" "I don't know the specifics," Sevda whispered, glancing nervously at the door. "But I've overheard him on the phone multiple times talking about taking over the leadership of the company." "He wants to run the company? But Uncle Altan would never step down for him. Cem might actually try to hurt him!" "What? No, Açelya," Sevda said quickly, shaking her head. "Sure, he wants power, but he wouldn't go as far as hurting his own uncle. I just don't think Cem is capable of that." Suddenly, a faint rustling sound came from right outside the door. "What was that noise?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat. I rushed over and pulled the door open, but the hallway was completely empty. Maybe I'm just paranoid, I thought. Turning back to Sevda, I said, "I feel like I don't even recognize my own brother anymore. But please, promise me this conversation stays between us. My uncles must not find out." "Don't worry, you know your secrets are safe with me," Sevda reassured me, patting my shoulder. "But let's not let our guard down. I'll keep a very close eye on Cem from now on." After Aunt Sevda left, I managed to force myself to eat. But just as I finished, my bedroom door was violently kicked open. "Well, look at you, princess! Bon appétit!" my mother, Nil, screamed. Before I could even react, she lunged forward and grabbed a handful of my hair, yanking it painfully. "What kind of sister are you, huh?!" Aunt Sevda rushed back into the room, trying to pull her away. "Nil! Stop! What on earth are you doing?!" Nil released my hair but stepped closer, pointing a menacing finger in my face. "Listen to me, Açelya. Open your ears and listen well. Stop sticking your nose into your brother's business. If I catch you slinking around him one more time, you will wish you were never born!" She turned on her heel and stormed out. Wiping the hot tears from my face, I lay down on my bed, staring at the ceiling. If only you stood behind me the way you protect your precious son, Mother... Third-Person POV "How many times do I have to tell you? I did not blow up that damn warehouse!" Caner shouted, slamming his hands on the desk in the corporate office. Altan rubbed his temples, exhausted. "Brother, the supplier swears it was you. Their people literally saw you at the perimeter five minutes before the warehouse went up in flames." "I received a text from an unknown number," Caner defended himself fiercely. "It told me to meet at that specific warehouse for a weapons deal. But when I got there, nobody showed up. I waited for a bit, left, and the next thing I knew, the place was targeted by an arsonist." Erdem frowned. "Then who the hell set the fire?" "Whoever did it wants us dead," Akın stated grimly. "They are trying to ignite a war between us and Ateş Kılıç." Cem smirked from the corner of the room. "Or maybe Ateş burned it down himself just to frame us." "Why would he deliberately destroy nearly 3,000 units of his own premium product just to frame us? That makes zero financial sense," Altan reasoned. "He's right," Erdem agreed, sighing. "Brothers, why are we sitting here overthinking this? We'll just meet with the man, tell him face-to-face that we didn't blow up his warehouse, and end it right there." "I don't think it's going to be that simple, Erdem," Caner muttered darkly. "Neither do I," Akın agreed. "We are talking about Ateş Kılıç here." Cem looked at Akın, a cold glint in his eyes. "We aren't exactly small-time amateurs either, Father." Akın knew that look all too well. His son was up to something again, hiding behind a mask of loyalty. "Like Erdem said, we will sit down and talk," Altan finalized. "If diplomacy fails, then we resort to other measures." Having discussed the crisis, the men of the Demir family wrapped up their meeting and headed back to the estate. Açelya's POV I had absolutely no appetite for dinner, but Uncle Caner and Aunt Deniz practically forced me to join them. We were all gathered around the grand dining table in strained silence. "Mother," Altan addressed Handan quietly. "We have a high-profile guest coming tonight. I need everyone to retire to their rooms and stay inside. No exceptions." "Of course, my son," Handan complied instantly, before turning her cold glare toward me and the other women. "You heard him." Aunt Sinem scoffed, crossing her arms. "You invite a guest to our home and lock us away in our rooms like prisoners?" "I have no choice, my love," Altan said softly, his tone final. After a tense dinner, we all retreated to our rooms. I was overwhelmed with curiosity about this mysterious late-night visitor. It was 2:00 AM, and I sat by my window, waiting. The women of the house were asleep, but the men—and I—were wide awake. Suddenly, a fleet of black luxury SUVs flooded our courtyard. I quickly leaned against the window frame, hiding behind the curtains to watch. A man stepped out of the lead vehicle. Hold on a second... It was him. The arrogant giant who had slammed into me at the hospital. What was he doing here? Were he and my father allies? Uncle Altan extended his hand in greeting, but the man completely ignored it, keeping his arms crossed. Nope, definitely not friends. "You said we needed to talk, and you drag me out to your private estate?" Ateş spat, his voice carrying through the quiet night. "Yes," Altan replied calmly. "We did not blow up your warehouse, nor did we touch your merchandise. I brought you to my home to prove that we want an honorable resolution." Ateş let out a dark, mocking chuckle. "You clearly don't know who I am if you think you can play me with these pathetic bedtime stories." "Let's not do this out in the open," Altan gestured toward the main doors. "Step inside, and we can discuss the terms." As Altan spoke, Ateş’s sharp eyes began to scan the facade of the mansion—and then, they locked directly onto me. Stupid, stupid girl. I had forgotten to turn off my bedroom light. He stared up at me intently, his gaze heavy and assessing. He recognized me; I could see it in the way his eyes narrowed. Suddenly, I caught sight of Cem standing below, subtly gesturing with his head for me to get inside. I pulled the curtains shut, my heart hammering against my ribs. Outside, Ateş’s rough voice boomed. "I'm not stepping into your house. You destroyed nearly 3,000 units of my product. If you want to settle this peacefully, I have one condition." "Name it," Altan said. "Since you ruined my supply chain, you are going to compensate me. Your company, Demir Logistics, will now handle the transport and smuggling of my remaining shipments." "Whoa, stop right there!" Erdem barked. "We aren't paying a penalty for a crime we didn't commit!" Caner yelled. "Brothers, calm down," Altan tried to intervene. "Calm down?! Altan, are you out of your mind?!" Erdem roared. "We told him we didn't do it!" Akın stepped in. "Erdem, step back. We can't negotiate like this." Altan turned back to Ateş. "Look, Ateş. If this were weapons, we could find a compromise. But we don't touch narcotics. Our family is strictly against it." "You're so against it that you decided to incinerate my entire livelihood instead?" Ateş hissed. "Listen to me, you arrogant bastard, you're pushing my last nerve," Caner snarled, drawing his firearm and pointing it straight at Ateş. In a split second, Ateş and a dozen of his heavily armed bodyguards drew their weapons, aiming directly at my family. "Don't test me, Mr. Altan," Ateş growled, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You're out-manned and out-gunned." "You're the one crossing the line, Ateş Kılıç," Altan countered, raising his own gun. "The only thing crossing a line tonight will be your blood on the pavement. I can wipe your entire legacy off the map in a heartbeat." Everyone had their guns drawn. It was a countdown to a m******e. I couldn't just stand there and watch them die. Without thinking, I bolted out of my room and sprinted downstairs. I threw the heavy front doors open, bursting into the courtyard. "Stop it! Are you all completely insane?! What are you doing?!" "Açelya! Stay out of this! Get back inside the house right now!" Altan yelled, panic cracking his voice. "Lower your weapons!" I screamed. "AÇELYA, I TOLD YOU TO GET INSIDE!" my father roared. "And I said I'm not going anywhere!" I defied him, turning around to face the giant. "At least not until this brute of a caveman takes his thugs and leaves!" I stared directly into Ateş's eyes. He was looking down at me with a strange, profoundly intense expression. Slowly, a dark smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. He raised his hand, signaling his men. "Lower your weapons," Ateş commanded his men. He holstered his own gun, and reluctantly, my father and uncles lowered theirs. Ateş took a step closer to me, his gaze never wavering. "In our world, we don't harm women or children. If I am lowering my weapon tonight, it's solely because I refuse to slaughter your family right in front of those pretty green eyes, little girl. But don't mistake my mercy for weakness. This is far from over." With a final, lingering look at me, he turned, got into his SUV, and the fleet sped away into the darkness. My uncles and father were staring at me like I was a ghost. Suddenly, my father grabbed my arm with a crushing grip and dragged me forcefully inside the house. "Father, stop! You're hurting me!" I cried out. "I was terrified! I thought they were going to kill you all!" He threw me into my room, tossing me onto the bed as he erupted in fury. "Since when is it your job to protect us, huh?! What if he had put a bullet through your head?! What the hell were you thinking?!" he screamed, his face red with rage. I couldn't choke back my tears. "I'm sorry, Father..." Cem walked into the room, leaning against the doorframe with a cold expression. "Don't yell at her too much, Father. Frankly, if Açelya hadn't intervened, that monster would have probably slaughtered us all." Akın pointed an angry finger at me, his eyes suddenly glistening with unshed tears. "Don't ever do something like that again, Açelya. If anything happens to you... my life won't have any meaning left." With that raw confession, he turned and walked out. Cem let out a sarcastic chuckle. "Bravo, little sister. Should we pin a medal on your chest now? Next time you want to play the martyr, pick the right people to die for, idiot." He rolled his eyes and left, slamming the door. Ateş's POV I lay down on the leather couch in my office, intending to shake off the exhaustion of the day, but her face kept flashing behind my eyelids. That girl. I couldn't get her out of my mind. Despite her delicate frame and obvious youth, the sheer, unadulterated bravery she displayed tonight had pulled at something deep within me. Get a grip, Ateş, I scolded myself, rubbing my face. She is the daughter of your sworn enemy. Suddenly, my private phone vibrated on the glass table. I picked it up, answering coldly. "I can deliver exactly what you're looking for," a voice corporate and smooth murmured on the other end. "That is, if you're still open to a corporate partnership." "Who the hell is this?" I demanded. A dark laugh echoed through the receiver. "I am Cem Demir."
