CHAPTER FIVE

I struggled to fit my armor on and cursed for the fifteenth time. Any moment now, I would be called upon, and here I was, still fumbling with it.“It’ll be alright,” my wolf reassured me. “It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have suggested that run.”I sighed. “This isn’t your fault, buddy. I’m the stupid one for losing my sense of direction.”“Yes, you are,” came Damon’s voice. I whirled around to see him standing in the doorway of the old locker room.“Gee, thanks. As if I needed reminding,” I said sarcastically. Damon’s eyes flared as he crossed the distance between us, grabbing my chin hard.“Don’t ever speak to me rudely again in front of my guards,” he growled. I could see his eyes turning yellow, and it was starting to scare me.“I’m sorry,” I said, and he let go. I rubbed my jaw, catching a glimpse of regret in his eyes before he masked it with his usual menacing look.“What’s taking you so long?” he asked, and I raised the armor in my hands.“I don’t know how to put this on,” I admitted, feeling ridiculous. He looked me up and down. “You’re wearing a gown. You can’t put armor over that. Take it off.”My eyes widened, and my face reddened. “I can’t.”He growled in frustration and grabbed me, tearing the gown off with his bare hands. I squealed, covering my bra-clad chest. Damon shook his head in exasperation and tossed me a shirt and jeans. “Put that on,” he said, turning around. For a moment, I stood there, stunned. He was a rogue, yet he turned away to give me privacy. Even males in my pack didn’t do that, they took every opportunity to stare at us nude when they had the chance. Here was a renowned rogue, a killer turning to let his prisoner changeI quickly changed into the new clothes, and when he turned back around, his eyes lingered a little too long on my chest. I blushed, becoming self conscious, but I made no move to cover my breasts this time and I didn’t know why.“Good,” he said.“Good?” I echoed, raising a brow. He tore his gaze away from my cleavage.“I meant your outfit,” he said, shaking his head as he picked up the armor. “Turn around.”“Why?” I asked, confused. His green eyes bore into mine. “f*****g just turn around, little pup.”I turned, hiding my smile. “Little pup.” It sounded nice, especially coming from someone like Damon, a notorious killer. I kind of liked it.Damon fitted the armor around my body, and I was very aware of how close he was. His hands brushed against my skin through the clothes, and my thoughts wandered to how Elaine once described sex.For an embarrassing moment, I pictured Damon kissing me, tearing off my clothes as he had earlier, and I had to cover my mouth to keep from moaning. He came around to the front and adjusted the breastplate. I just stared at him as he worked. I’d never seen anyone so dangerous look so handsome. Maybe there was some humanity in him.“There, all done,” he said. I nodded, trying hard not to stare at his lips so close to mine.“Thank you,” I said awkwardly, and he nodded. We stood there in silence before I blurted out what had been on my mind.“Have you had s*x before?”He grinned mischievously. “Countless times. Want to try a quickie?”I shook my head, trying to hide my blush. “Is the maid one of the people you’ve…?”“Slept with? Yes,” he answered. I nodded.“Can you do one thing for me?” I asked, and he suddenly became serious.“What’s that?”I sighed, unsure how to say it. “I know I’m going to die, but I just want to know how it feels to be kissed.”He stared at me, his green eyes alight with curiosity. “So?”I stepped closer, closing the gap between us. “I want you to kiss me. You, Damon Thorne.”Up close, I could see the conflict in his eyes. Then, I saw him accept. Without a word, he leaned down and captured my lips with his, softly. I wrapped my arms around his neck, intoxicated by how perfect it felt. When he pulled away, his eyes were half-lidded.“Satisfied? We should—”I cut him off by pulling him in for another kiss. I couldn’t stop at just one. I wanted him. I wanted more. I couldn’t even think of Ken or the battle ahead. All I could think about was how safe it felt in his strong, muscled arms.“Mate,” my wolf said so loudly in my head that I stumbled back in shock. Damon looked just as surprised.“Did your wolf say that too?” he asked. I nodded.“f**k!” He cursed, stepping back and handing me my sword. “It’s time. I should get going.”“Damon, wait!” I said, sheathing the sword. “Are you really going to let me die?”He shrugged, turning to face me. “You trespassed. You have to die.”“What about all the packs you’ve looted and terrorized? Isn’t that trespassing?” I asked, hoping he’d deny it, but he didn’t.“I’m a monster, Cass,” he said. Wait, how did he know my name? “I’m evil. Evil doesn’t care why it makes rules, but it punishes those who break them.”“I know you’re not evil, Damon. Stop pretending. You don’t want me to die,” I said, and he smiled so darkly that I wondered if I’d made a mistake.“We’ll see about that, little pup. After we feast on your blood tonight,” he said, storming off. My heart raced. Did he mean that? The horns sounded, and I heard the roar of the crowd cheering. It’s time to see if all those lessons with Patrick would pay off. Despite my body was trembling and my legs wobbling , I moved towards the battlefield, gulping down the saliva gathering in my mouth.'Was this how I would end?' I pondered, feeling the hairs at the back of my neck stand up as my competitor moved into the battlefield as well, raising up his sword with a smile.Immediately he entered, his fellow men cheered him on, chanting his name, and then pointing towards me."Kill her, kill her, kill her"."Serve the moon goddess her blood". Another yelled."Vandicate us, kill her". They yelled and I was horrified. 'was this how much they hated me?' I wondered, feeling my hold on my sword go weak. I looked up and noticed the ugly brute flashing the ugly brute flashing me an evil grin, the side of his lips curling up, as he raised his hand to his neck, making a slashing sign.Goosebumps covered me immediately and I felt a lump in my throat, beads of sweats gathering on my forehead as I knew what he was thinking. His grin indicated he couldn't wait to end me, but I wasn't going to allow that, was I?At this thought, the hold on my sword tightened as he suddenly moved to my front, swiftly. My eyes widened as I barely had time to dodge as he struck.
