CHAPTER THREE

I opened my eyes and suddenly jumped to my feet, on alert. It all felt like a dream—getting lost, those strange werewolves, and... Alpha Damon? Damon was Alpha Ken’s long-lost brother, who had been banished by their father, the late alpha, for being weak. Our pack allowed only one alpha, and when the alpha’s sons were old enough, they had to fight for the title. The victor ruled; the losers were banished. I stared around, realizing I was in an unfamiliar room. I remembered being naked, but now I was in a nightgown. Did someone see me naked? For a fleeting moment, I pictured Damon dressing me himself, and I shook my head. He didn’t look like the type who would go as far as dressing a lady.“You must be thinking it’s all a dream,” came that familiar deep voice from behind me, and I jumped. Standing at the doorway was Alpha Damon. If I thought Ken was handsome, then Damon was twice that. I could barely look at him without feeling a strange flutter in my gut, like my insides were melting.“Did you dress me?” I asked, and for a moment, he just stood there in the doorway, staring at me. Then he smiled, his eyes roaming over my body, making me feel as naked as I had been earlier.“No. Though I can see it wouldn’t be a bad idea,” he said, and I blushed, looking away.“You couldn’t dress a woman—you don’t seem the type,” I retorted, and Damon smiled.“Yeah, you’re right. I can’t. But I could take the dress off,” he said, and again I felt color creep up my cheeks. Then his demeanor changed. The playful look in his eyes suddenly became dead serious.“What were you doing on my lands?” he said in a low tone.“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to trespass. I got lost,” I pleaded, and Damon stared at me, expressionless, for a moment before bursting into laughter.“Didn’t mean to?” he echoed, his green eyes boring into mine with a fire that shouldn’t be normal. “Do you know what we do to trespassers?”“You kill them?” I said, and he smiled. He plopped into a chair in front of me, smiling like he was enjoying this. “Eventually, yes. But I prefer to torture them first,” he said, and I stared at him, already disliking him.“That’s evil,” I said with a scowl, and he grinned. He shrugged.“I learned from the best,” he said dryly, and I narrowed my eyes. What did he mean by that?“And who’s that?” I asked. He snarled, the sound making the hairs on my skin stand.“My father,” he said. I could sense the bitterness in his voice. In fact, I could sense everything about him, which was strange.“Your father didn’t do anything wrong. Rules are rules. You didn’t win the fight—Ken did. If I remember correctly, you ran,” I said, wanting to hurt him a bit. His eyes darkened at that. He stood and paced the room.“I expect no different from a member of the Luna Pack,” he said. I noticed he said "Luna Pack" with disdain.“Maybe you shouldn’t have been so weak,” I countered. In a flash, Damon grabbed my throat, pinning me to the nearby wall and squeezing tightly, so much that I could barely breathe.“Weak?” he growled in my ear. “You called me weak? Maybe I should show you just how evil I can get when I’m pissed.” His fingers tightened around my throat, and just when I thought he was going to kill me, he released his grip.I noticed he was just a breath away from me, and I was pressed against him. He noticed this too, and for a moment, I just stared into those cruel green eyes of his. My eyes wandered to his lips, and suddenly all I could think of was how much I wanted to kiss him. He leaned forward, his mouth so close to mine that I was sure that if I had puckered my lips, they would have touched his.“I won’t kill you now,” he whispered. I nodded, too drugged by the moment to even comprehend what he was saying. He pushed himself away from me with obvious effort and walked out of the room, leaving me wondering what had just happened.I couldn’t deny that at that moment, I had badly wanted to feel his lips on mine. I kept telling myself it was wrong, but I couldn’t shake it from my mind. It was like an enchanted fruit drawing me in. Heck! I couldn’t even remember Ken’s face at that moment. The door opened, and a middle-aged woman, who looked to be in her late thirties, walked in wearing a maid’s uniform. She was holding a tray with scrambled eggs and tea. She scowled at me.“The alpha said you should eat before he doles out punishment for trespassing,” she said. I stared at her, surprised. We didn’t know each other, yet she already disdained me so much.“Is he going to kill me?” I asked, and the woman glared at me with malicious eyes.“I wish he would do it sooner. I hate trespassers like you, especially unmated female werewolves,” she growled, and I stared at her, shocked. Why did she sound jealous?“I assure you, that wasn’t my intention. I was lost,” I said, and she stopped cleaning the room. I noticed her hand gripping the duster hard. She turned to me in annoyance.“Eat your damned food, and let’s see what Damon has in store for you,” she said, slamming the door behind her.As I shoved the food into my mouth, washing it down with the hot tea, I noticed two things. First, she was far too beautiful and voluptuous to be just a maid. And second, she called him by his first name, not "alpha," which was strange coming from a maid.
