If a puppy, a kitten and a baby rabbit were mashed into one, the result would still be nowhere near as heart-tinglingly cute as the little beast staring at me. It reminded me of a golden monkey, except that it had three huge eyes, feathers instead of fur and two tails that were currently wrapped around the branches behind it. It was the size of a small cat and had the same kind of ears, with tiny golden tufts of fur – or were they feathers, too? – growing inside. Its face was elongated, ending in a pointy nose like a mouse’s, with silver whiskers sprouting from its cheeks. I’d never seen anything cuter. It had to be the eyes, big and dark and watery. I wanted to cradle the little animal against my chest and never let it go.
