Although Capri was my best friend, I have never been to her house. I always feel like a charity case and hate judgmental looks as if I'm the reason for being in foster care. Her father was a lawyer, and her mother was a well-known doctor in the community. I find it better to keep to myself. So every time she asked me to come over I always made excuses for not going, so she eventually stopped asking.
We pulled up to a grand Victorian mansion at the front gate and were let in by security. Capri looks over and sees the concerned look on my face. "Don't worry Maya, everything will be OK, I promise."
It was a beautiful house with a wrap-around porch with the same crown moldings, and the landscape looked like it was done by a painter. As if a weed would even dare to sprout. We got out of the car and a huge man who had to be 6'4 and looked like he had been lifting weights since he could walk. "Hello Ma'am" as he bows. "Hello Marko, can you grab Maya's bag and place it in the guest room next to mine." Yes, Ma'am with pleasure." he bows again right before we walk up the stairs. I looked back confused. Did this ninja just bow? We walked into the front door and I gasped at the décor. It looked so royal, with gold fixtures and two grand mahogany staircases on each side of the entrance with a crystal chandelier in the center that was to die for. There was art of all kinds, but what stood out the most was the ones of wolves. Capri sees the expression on my face as I look around. "Yeah, my mom has a serious obsession with wolves, they are everywhere in the house. " Mom, Dad" Capri yells as it echoes through the house. After a moment, I heard the sounds of heels clicking on the marble floor. Capri's mother was beautiful. Her skin color was the same milk chocolate brown as Capri's, with dimples on both sides of her cheeks that matched the most exquisite smile, it made her almond-shaped eyes shine and welcomed you in. She had shoulder-length hair and was tall and had legs for days. "Ah, Capri my love!" Ruth said with excitement.
Ruth turns to me and instantly stops in her tracks. It's like she saw a ghost. Maybe it was my eyes. One was hazel, the other one was green. Capri looks at her mother with concern, " Mom are you ok?"
"Uh yes... Yes, dear, I'm sorry, Maya, my apologies. You just look like someone I knew. Well, enough of that. It's so nice to finally meet you, Maya. Clay had a meeting at the firm, and he will not be home till later."
" I've got dinner on the stove, so let's go in the kitchen." She turns on her heels and strolls off.
"That was weird" Capri whispered to me as we followed her mother.
As we stepped into the kitchen my jaw dropped, it was huge. It had gold fixtures with all-white and black marble countertops and state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances. It was a chef's dream, and of course, little figurines of wolves, there were even salt and pepper shakers shaped like wolves. "Sit.. sit I've made baked mac and cheese, oxtails, rice and beans, and cabbage. How does that sound, you girls must be hungry." As soon as she said that, my stomach grumbled loudly. I look away embarrassed, as Ruth says "Well stomachs don't lie" as we all bust out in laughter. "So Maya, Capri has told me so much about you, and a little bit about your situation, but I would like to hear it from you, my dear."
