Vera arrives on a Wednesday, with one assistant and no announcement, and the first thing Selene notices is that she has not come the way Caden comes, with the careful restraint of someone earning back territory. She has come the way someone arrives at a place they already have a right to enter.
She is small and precise, somewhere past seventy, dressed in a grey wool coat despite the mild weather, and she moves through the doorway of the apartment with the kind of unhurried authority that makes the room feel briefly smaller than it is. Selene has met council members before, at functions and proceedings during her years as Luna, but she has never been alone in a room with one who came specifically to see her, rather than the Alpha standing beside her.
