Despite my initial misgivings, my partner turned out to be a welcome diversion. We spent the dance in amiable conversation and he even managed to get a few laughs from me. By the time the dance had ended, I was sorry to see him go. With a courtly bow and a chaste kiss on my hand, he reluctantly left my side.
