Chapter 4

Violet’s POV I reasoned with myself that it was likely just my dad going out to take a short walk around the property or something as I opened the door and stepped out into the hallway. I honestly couldn’t have known what would greet me when that door swung open. When I tentatively set my foot out into the hallway floor. When the stars in the sky aligned just right, and karma dumped its ugly b***h face right onto our safe house. My worry was for a valid reason, every single fear, every single thought I had leading up to this moment. All of the panic, the racing heart, the tears. They had in no way prepared me for the sight that actually met my gaze when I stepped out into that hallway. Alex, his blonde hair flowing about his face, brown eyes set, his face hard and grown rough from worry. Wrinkles had started to appear around his eyes, likely from worrying entirely too much about where I was and what I was doing. His clothes were ragged, and it smelled as though he hadn’t bathed in quite some time. The stench rising from him was enough to make a dead man scream. Standing in front of him was my father. His back up against the wall, chest heaving with panic, his eyes wild, the white glaring against the pale skin. He was drawing in gasps of air, and I was quite certain he was about to have a panic attack. The gun that Alex held in his hand didn’t look like a regular gun that someone might use for self defence, rather it was large and looked like it would hold a huge load of ammo. He was pointing it right at my dad and the look on his face said it all. He was done, he was angry, he was fed up with it all. His eyes shot daggers at me as she took a step closer to my dad somehow hoping that in some small way I could bring him comfort, peace. To aid him in the panic that was spiralling through him. I wasn’t immune to the emotions myself. After everything, all the pain, the rejections, the denial and finally – finally getting Ryan… she was going to lose her dad to the very man she had originally pined after? Something was wrong with this picture, something was so very wrong and I wished beyond wish that Ryan was here to hold my hand. Alex made a muffled sound of anger and I shot him a glare. How dare he do this to me? I screeched in annoyance. “How dare you break into our house! How dare you do this to me! I trusted you. You were my friend, and now I come in here and you are holding a gun pointed right at my father. Not even a regular gun either. A fancy one, and he is all I have. He is. He is my only family.” “That’s not quite true now is it? Violet?” He sneered, spittle splattering through the air. I stared at him in disgust. How had I ever found this man attractive?. How could I have ever wanted to belong to him the way I belonged to Ryan? He was disgusting. “What do you mean it isn’t true?” I cried. “It isn’t true, is what I mean.” A maniacal laugh rose around him. “I don’t know what universe you are from, but having a boyfriend isn’t exactly scott free. You do have someone. You have Ryan.” A look I couldn’t quite place crossed his face and I recognized this for exactly what it was. A man with an anger issue, a possession issue. He needed to see a psychiatrist and get help but first thing first I had to find a way to help my dad. Alex wasn’t too concerned about that, however, and as he pushed his finger toward the trigger, I jumped into action. My thoughts were all on how to save my dad. Instead, the blast of a gunshot rang out through the small house. The sound echoing around in my head like a volcano explosion. My heart began to beat loudly, pain radiating across my chest. The irony wasn’t lost on her, the man my father had tried to kill was now going to try to kill him. Another shot rang out through the air, and I screamed. “Stop. No stop. Stop now. No, that's my dad. No Stop.” My voice fell on deaf ears as another, then another shot rang out. The crazed man shooting through my father’s body as though it were nothing more than a target for which he could practice on. Rather than being a human being with a body, soul, and feelings. He simply filled him full of bullets until he stopped moving. Red blooming across his chest, the breaths stopped coming. All I could hear was the sound of my own heart racing in my chest. Screams of agony crushing through my lips as I fell to my knees in front of my dad. “Alex no! How could you?!” I cried, pain ripping through me as I fiddled for my phone. Where was it? I had to get help! She had to get Ryan! He would know what to do, he would save my dad. He had to, he had to try. Something had to be given, my dad was one of the most well known men in the state, he couldn’t just die. Not like this. Not at the hands of an unrequited lover. Especially not while I was still courting a Salvador. He just couldn’t. He had to live. He had to see another day. His chest was no longer moving, and panic crawled through me as I finally got the phone number typed in.
