Chapter 9: The Search That Changed Everything (Part 3)

1047 Words
The plaza seemed to hold its breath. Even the noise of the fiesta—the music, the chatter, the laughter—felt like it softened for a moment, as if the world itself was waiting to see what would happen next. Jerwin stood still in the middle of the walkway, chest rising and falling, his nerves finally catching up with him. Anabel and Reilyn had stopped a short distance away, turning slightly but not fully facing him. Lester stayed a few steps behind, quietly observing. He didn’t interrupt. He didn’t step in. He simply watched, ready if things fell apart—but hoping they wouldn’t. Jerwin swallowed hard. This was it. No more chasing. No more confusion. Just truth. He took a step forward. “Anabel…” His voice cracked slightly, but he didn’t stop. “I’m sorry.” Silence. A few people nearby slowed down, sensing something was happening. A group of teenagers stopped laughing. Even a vendor paused mid-call. Jerwin continued, gathering courage with every word. “I know I made you uncomfortable.” “I know I kept following you around.” “I thought… I thought I was showing you I cared.” He shook his head at himself. “But I didn’t respect your space.” “That wasn’t love. That was just me being selfish.” His voice grew quieter now, but more sincere. “I’m really sorry, Anabel.” “I won’t bother you anymore. I promise.” For a moment, no one spoke. Even Reilyn glanced at Anabel, waiting for her reaction. Anabel stared at Jerwin. Not angry anymore. Just quiet. Like she was finally seeing him clearly for the first time. Jerwin didn’t move. He didn’t try to defend himself. He just waited. Seconds passed. Then Anabel exhaled slowly. “Jerwin…” Her tone was calmer than before. “I appreciate the apology.” Jerwin blinked. “You… do?” She nodded slightly. “But I need you to understand something.” Jerwin listened closely. “I wasn’t angry because you liked me.” That surprised him. “I was uncomfortable because you didn’t stop when I needed space.” Jerwin lowered his head. “I understand now.” Anabel studied him for a moment longer. Then she gave a small nod. “Thank you for saying it properly.” Jerwin let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. “I won’t do it again,” he said quietly. “I know.” There was no dramatic reconciliation. No sudden forgiveness hug. No music swelling in the background. Just acceptance. And honesty. Anabel turned slightly to leave again, this time more peacefully. Reilyn followed, but before she walked away, she glanced once more at Jerwin—and then at Lester. Lester wasn’t looking at Jerwin anymore. He was looking at her. Their eyes met. For a brief second, everything else faded. The crowd. The music. Even Jerwin’s situation. Reilyn tilted her head slightly, as if silently acknowledging the chaos they had both just witnessed. Lester gave a small, awkward smile. “Sorry about all that,” he said as he stepped forward. “My cousin has… strong energy.” Reilyn let out a soft laugh. “I noticed.” Her voice was light, not mocking—just amused. Lester relaxed a little. “I’m Lester.” “Reilyn.” They shook hands briefly. Her hand was warm, her grip gentle. Nothing dramatic. Nothing flashy. But something about it stayed with Lester longer than he expected. Reilyn glanced back toward Jerwin, who was now standing quietly beside Anabel, no longer chasing, no longer speaking—just accepting the moment. “He really meant it,” she said. Lester nodded. “Yeah. He did.” Reilyn smiled faintly. “That’s rare.” Lester chuckled. “Tell me about it.” A short pause followed. Not awkward. Just quiet. Then Reilyn looked at him again. “You handled it well,” she said. “Most people would’ve panicked.” Lester shrugged. “I’ve had practice. My cousin creates situations like this regularly.” That made her laugh again. And this time, Lester noticed something simple but undeniable— Her laugh was effortless. Not forced. Not polite. Just real. And for some reason, that was enough to make him forget the noise around them again. Reilyn tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Well… I should go,” she said. Lester nodded. “Yeah. Of course.” She turned slightly to leave, then paused. “Oh—” She looked back at him. “Nice meeting you, Lester.” “Nice meeting you too.” For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Reilyn gave a small wave and walked away with Anabel, disappearing slowly into the colorful crowd of the fiesta. Lester stayed where he was. Still. Watching. Not because he needed to. But because he wanted to. Jerwin walked over after a moment, looking drained but relieved. “I did it,” he said quietly. Lester nodded. “Yeah. You did.” Jerwin exhaled. “I think she hates me less now.” Lester smiled. “That’s a win.” Jerwin glanced at him. “What are you smiling about?” Lester quickly cleared his throat. “Nothing.” But Jerwin noticed. “You’re weird.” Lester looked toward the direction Reilyn had gone. “Probably.” Jerwin followed his gaze, confused. “…You’re not thinking about her, are you?” Lester blinked. “What?” Jerwin narrowed his eyes. “You are.” Lester shook his head immediately. “No.” A beat passed. Then Jerwin smirked. “Ohhh.” Lester sighed. “Don’t start.” But even as he said it, he couldn’t stop himself from looking once more at the crowd where Reilyn had disappeared. The fiesta continued around them as if nothing had changed. But for Lester… Something had. Something quiet. Something unexpected. Something he didn’t have a name for yet. And far across the plaza, Reilyn walked beside Anabel, briefly glancing back one last time—only to see Lester still standing there, as if he hadn’t quite decided to leave the moment behind. She smiled softly to herself. Then turned away. And disappeared into the lights. End of Chapter
