CHAPTER 5: THE CONFESSION

535 Words
As the days went by, Lester and Bebe continued talking almost every day. Their friendship had grown stronger over the years, and it did not take long for Lester's classmates to notice something. "Hey, Lester, you like Bebe, don't you?" they would tease. Soon, he became the subject of endless jokes and playful teasing. But Lester never got angry. The truth was, they were right. Somewhere along the way, he had completely fallen for her. What started as friendship through letters had become something much deeper. Because of his growing feelings, Lester became curious about Bebe's life outside school. Eventually, he found out where she lived. From then on, he would often pass by her house, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. Sometimes it was late at night. Sometimes it was almost midnight. He would ride his bicycle together with his cousin along the dark roads between their barangays. There was one barangay separating their homes, but that never stopped him. Even though there were many dogs along the way, they continued making the trip. On one occasion, several dogs chased them as they rode past Bebe's neighborhood. They pedaled as fast as they could while laughing and shouting in fear. Yet despite the risks and the distance, Lester kept returning. Not because he had to. But because his heart wanted to. As time passed, he realized he could no longer keep his feelings hidden. He decided it was finally time to tell Bebe the truth. For days, he planned what he would say. He rehearsed the words in his mind over and over again. Then the day finally came. When they met, Lester gathered every bit of courage he had. His heart raced. His hands trembled. But he spoke anyway. "Bebe, I love you," he said. He took a deep breath before continuing. "I don't see you as just a friend anymore." For a moment, everything became silent. Bebe looked at him with sadness in her eyes. Then she gently replied. "I'm sorry, Lester." His heart immediately sank. "I don't feel the same way." The words hurt more than he expected. But Bebe was not finished. "There is someone else that I already like." Lester felt as though the world had suddenly become heavier. The confession he had imagined for so long ended in rejection. He smiled weakly, trying to hide the pain. But inside, his heart was breaking. For days afterward, he kept thinking about her answer. Eventually, painful thoughts began to fill his mind. Maybe she could never like him. Maybe he simply wasn't good enough. Maybe he could never compete with the person she admired. The boy she liked was handsome, talented, and known for his beautiful singing voice. Compared to him, Lester felt ordinary. For the first time, he became painfully aware of his insecurities. As he looked at himself, he wondered if appearance and talent were the reasons he had been rejected. That heartbreak became one of the most painful lessons of his young life. But little did he know, this rejection was not the end of his story. It was the beginning of a journey that would teach him the true meaning of self-worth, growth, and love.
