“Oh!” I managed in a low tone.
“Is he here? Your dad?” I swallowed after asking. I wasn’t sure what answer I wanted.
Was I ready to face the man who ruined my life?
Ryan shook his head. “Nope. He’s out of the country for now. Never really a present father.” He muttered the last part, but I still heard it.
Their relationship must not be great.
“Was that your Mom earlier?”
I wasn’t curious about his life or anything. Just gathering enough information, it’s part of the mission.
Whatever I choose to tell myself.
“Oh! Nana?” He chuckled, “ I like to think of her like that. She’s been taking care of me since I was a boy and I can’t just seem to let her go.”
“That’s sweet. She seems very nice too.”
The conversation helped distract me from my aching ankle.
I wanted to ask about his mom. Was she a ‘not so present’ mother also?
“And here’s my floor.” He announced before I formed my question.
I sighed in relief. After several painful steps, we were finally on the fifth floor.
“You have an entire floor to yourself?” I walked past him and looked around. It was quite different from the previous ones. More stylish and of course, paintings.
“You really love paintings.” I stepped closer to one hanging on the wall. It looked expensive enough to buy a small country.
“Careful.” Ryan smiled. “Those are my babies.”
I quickly pulled my hand back.
“I might even give you a tour before you leave.”
“Lucky me.”
He opened a door and I followed him inside.
It was indeed, his home office. The dark marble tiles caught my eyes first, then the large study table. A small shelves of books and heaps of files arranged neatly on another table.
It was cozy, the window was wide open and fresh breeze rushed in.
A bowl of hangover soup was on his large table, it must have already gone cold and now looked like concoction.
“This could spill on your laptop.” The moment I turned around, I walked straight into Ryan.
Cold soup splashed all over me.
“Argh! Seriously?.” I stared at my clothes, feeling the cold liquid soak my bra.
“I’m so sorry. Ouuu, this is bad.” Ryan’s palm covered his palm as he looked me up and down.
“Seriously? You look like you’re stifling a laugh right now.” I frowned at him and he shook his head.
“No no, why would I…” He let out a small laugh.
“You’re laughing.” I cried out and soon we were both laughing uncontrollably.
I watched him laugh.
Oh! What a beautiful sight.
He had a very cute and contagious laugh.
We stopped and the atmosphere turned awkward, almost immediately.
“Ummm, let’s get you cleaned up.” He cleared his throat and I nodded.
“You will have to go wash up. I’ll have Nana bring a change of clothes.” He led me out to the hallway and pointed at a door few steps to the right.
“That’s my bedroom. Or would you prefer to walk down to the first floor to use the guest’s bathroom?” There was a bit of sacarsm in his voice and I rolled my eyes at him.
“Haha, very funny.” I walked into the door.
His scent was everywhere, the curtains, the wall, his king’s sized bed.
I noticed a large portrait over his bed. Must be another expensive painting.
I switched on the lights. It was the portrait of a woman, smiling. She wore gold dress, her face was bare, no make up but she was really stunning.
I moved closer and saw Ryan’s blue eyes, his smile was also similar to hers. She must be his mother.
“So beautiful.” I muttered with a smile. And then something tugged my memory.
This face was familiar. Asides from the fact that she shared similar features with Ryan.
I had seen this face somewhere.
“Where have I seen you?” I asked myself out loud, trying so hard to remember but my memory was failing me.
The more I stared, the more familiar she seemed.
Knock knock
I turned sharply, withdrawing my hands from the portrait.
“Hey dear, can I come in?” I heard Nana’s voice and I opened the door.
“So sorry. Ryan can be quite messy.” She smiled at the mess on my clothes.
“I was the clumsy one.” I smiled back.
“Here, these are the only female clothes I could find around. Put your clothes in this basket, I’ll get them washed and ready before you leave.”
I collected the clothes and small basket from her, four dresses and a towel.
“Thank you so much. So sorry for stressing you.” I apologized and she waved it off as I walked into the bathroom.
I undressed and wrapped myself with the soft towel, I returned the basket with my clothes, feeling a little embarrassed to have her touch my bra.
I just hope the washing machine doesn’t shrink it.
“Alright then, go wash up.” She left and I returned to the bathroom, locking it behind me.
Every corner smelled like Ryan and maybe I will too because I have to use his shower gel.
I washed up and when I tried on the dresses, I realized something.
I have to be without bra. OMG! I covered my face with my palm.
I have to hang around Ryan without a bra?
I’m so dead.
I settled for a blue buttoned shirt dress. It covered me best, although it was above my knee, somewhere around my mid tigh. It was better than the armless pink, or boobs revealing black.
I went back into the bedroom and glanced at the portrait once more.
How about some snooping around?
Maybe I’ll find something about their Mafia dealings, something to destroy them.
I walked around the room, accessing everything.
There was a mini study table beside the wall with books on it.
Ryan must work a lot. His spaces are literally occupied with papers and books.
A black thick book caught my eye. The design was so ominous like it contained history or secrets.
I flipped it open, “What the f**k!” I flinched as a pistol stared back at me.
A gun in a book? This is crazy!
I touched it and it was cold, very cold. I doubt anyone could survive a bullet from this.
It looked cool though, not the regular gun. This was physically small but can’t be underestimate.
I know a thing or two about guns. Kudos to Marco.
Snooping around his room did nothing but prove that the Synonym of Ryan was DANGER.
Weapons were hidden everywhere, knives, dagger, guns, and others I didn’t recognize.
But then, was I expecting to see holy water and rosary in the room of a Mafia Heir?
I opened a bottom drawer and pulled out some files , it was titled ‘Delivery’
I flipped it open and it contained a list of addresses. Some within the USA, others in Italy, Russia… They were literally in every country.
The items were written in codes, I couldn’t tell if they were drugs or weapons.
I pulled out my phone and took pictures. Marco should find these useful.
Knock knock
“Did you find my bed appealing and fall asleep?” Ryan’s voice called.
“s**t. s**t. Shit.” I cursed under my breath as I hurriedly returned the files, almost crying at the ones I couldn’t check, but then, we live to fight another day.
I took one last glance at the room, one deep breath and stepped out of the room.
