14 | Wake Me Up THE breaking of skin from both Kryptonians was heard from a mile radius. Jessica's eyes snapped open at the feeling of something inside of her dying, being ripped away. Clark landed ten feet ahead of them on a large elevated slab of debris, the life drained from him. Sheilah, who was the closest to him, pushed off a huge piece of debris off of her body just as Clark's body landed on the slab. "Clark!" She gasped, racing over to him. She used her powers to get to the top. "Clark?" She asked, low-walking over to him. "Hey buddy, you did it." She said with a small smile. "You saved the world." When she turned him over by his arm, she saw the giant Kryptonite spear in his chest. She gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. When Clark flew to destroy Doomsday, he impaled himself with the spear that was still inside of the monster. Without the help of that spear, Clark wouldn't have been able to defeat Doomsday. Sheilah bent her head down to listen for his heartbeat, pushing back her hair; she listened closely. Although it was there, it was very faint. Sheilah knew he wasn't going to make it long. "Sh... Sheliah?" Clark mumbled. "Yeah, buddy? I'm here." She spoke, grabbing his hand, tears in her eyes. "C... Can you... tell Jessica some-something? He whispered. Sheilah bent her ear down to listen to Clark's final request. When he finished, she shook her head, staring at him with teary eyes. "I can do that." She smiled. "Now you... you rest." "T-Thank... you, S-Sheilah." Clark whispered, still minding his manners even in his time of death. When Sheilah heard Clark's shallow breath come to a stop, she squeezed her teary eyes closed. "No, thank you." She whispered, patting his cold hand. "Thank you, for being you, Clark." Sheilah looked up to the cloud grey clouds with a deep sigh. She hoped that God took him to where he belonged, in heaven with his father. All she could do, for such a selfless person, was to pray, pray for his soul and hope he was at peace. "Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo... Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil..." She swept her hand over Clark's lifeless eyes, closing them for the final time. "Amen." Sheilah laid Clark's hand down onto the pavement while wiping her eyes free from tears. "Phoenix?" Diana called, climbing up the elevated debris where she and Clark were. When her eyes landed on Clark's lifeless form, she felt her heart drop. "He's gone." Sheilah croaked, looking at her deceased friend. "He's in a better place, I can feel it." Diana walked over to the spear in Clark's chest and removed it, not wanting Jessica or Lois to see it. She tossed far away, now a part of the garbage of the battle sight. "Help me get him down." Diana said, wrapping Clark in his cape. Lois managed to drag Jessica away from the corpse of Doomsday with hassle. She wanted to go see if Clark was alright but didn't want to leave Jessica by herself. The earth stood still, there were no crickets, no growling, no breathing, nothing. With the help of Lois, Jessica managed to sit up. She clenched her shredded arm in pain. She sucked in a deep breath through her nose and lodged it back into place, a cracking sound echoing off the silence. That didn't stop the continuous pain of her shredded muscles that lay over the bones on her arm. "Where's Clark?" She asked weakly. "I can't... I can't feel him." Jessica prayed to whatever God was out there, to make sure her brother was alive; critically even. "I-I don't know..." Lois mumbled. The pounding of Jessica's heart and the feeling in her stomach was telling her that something wasn't right. She couldn't feel him, she felt as if something was ripped away from her. "Go find him, I'll be fine." Jessica mumbled, urging Lois to move. The reporter, hesitantly, rose to her feet and scampered off to find the love of her life. She knew he wasn't going to be alive, she had to keep that in her mind. Maybe if she set herself up for it, the realization wouldn't hurt her that hard. But Lois knew, it would hurt, it would hurt her so bad that it would change everything she knows and loves; especially Jessica. Jessica rose to her feet with a loud grunt. Everything in her body was popping and moaning, telling her to stay down and curl into a ball. She refused to let herself be stopped from finding her brother. With every step Jessica took, she grunted every time. The only thing on her mind was finding her brother, her twin, her best friend. She would rather die than not try her hardest to be with him when he needed her the most. The loud gasp of Lois caught her attention only fueled Jessica's limped pace. She came to an immediate stop when she saw Bruce step in front of her. "Jess...-" "Where's Clark?" She asked, looking at him through her good eyes, the other swelled shut. Bruce opened his mouth to say something but decided against it. "Where's my brother Bruce?" "I want you to sit down, you're in bad shape." "I'm not going to sit down when Clark is out there, probably wounded!" She argued, holding her arm. "Jess..-" "Move out of my way." She mumbled, going to move around him. Bruce made the mistake of grabbing her shoulders to stop her from going anywhere. "Jessica, you're pushing your body too hard. You need to rest." Bruce argued as calmly as he could. "Move out of my way!" She hissed, shoving past Bruce with her good shoulder. Jessica stumbled upon Lois sitting on the ground with Clark's dead body in her arms as she sobbed. Jessica inhaled a couple of deep breaths in shock, the person she's looked up to for all those years was gone. She limped closer, falling to her knees. She admired his peaceful face for a few seconds, touching the skin lightly before jerking it away at how cold he was. She swallowed thickly, her eyes tearing up. "Wake up..." She mumbled trying to hold back the sob she's about to unleash. Jessica began to gently shake her brother. "Please wake up," She sniffled. "Clark please!" She begged, shaking him a little more. Jessica's knotted wet hair began to shield her face from the sight of Diana and Bruce but not Sheilah, the fire bending meta-human was in tears as well. "Jessica..." Sheilah mumbled, walking towards her. She knew this was going to happen. "Wake up!" Jessica cried, interlocking both of her hands together and pounding it onto the spot where Clark's heart was. She ignored the sharp pain running up her left arm, ignored the ache in her heart, and most important, ignored the loss of her powers. Sheilah went to pull Jessica away from the corpse of her brother but didn't have to when Jessica's arms cradled her brother's head instead of Lois. The redhead cried into Jessica's shoulder while the, now, only child rested her forehead on her brothers. The once bright light of Jessica was blown out by the darkness of her fears.
