Chapter 6 – Acting with Impunity

1080 Words
In front of the Chris Group Building, Glett forced himself to suppress his excitement and stepped into the tower. Just fifteen minutes ago, he had received a call from the chairman’s secretary. The chairman wanted to see him in person. Was he about to get a promotion and a raise, and finally enter the company’s headquarters? Hahaha, it must be because I’ve done such an outstanding job lately. Along the way, everyone in the company greeted him with smiles. Clearly, they had guessed he was about to move up in the world. If not for the tight schedule, Glett would have stopped to bask in their congratulations. “Chairman, Manager Glett has arrived.” Secretary Sam reported cautiously to Chen Qi, who had just finished reading Erand’s diary. “Let him in.” Without even looking up, Chen Qi continued sorting through the stack of study materials on his desk. These were also retrieved from the safe—textbooks from the Taimoya Academy of Magic. Celestial Geomancy, The Relationship Between Astronomical Phenomena and Magnetic Fields, The Structure of Earth Veins, The Threefold Resonance of Man, Stars, and Earth Veins, Unsolved Mysteries of Human Civilization, The Complete Guide to Ancient Civilization Basics… Seventeen books in total! Especially The Complete Guide to Ancient Civilization Basics, a massive volume at least fifteen centimeters thick. When Glett entered, the sight that greeted him was the chairman engrossed in reading, which filled him with genuine admiration. He never expected the chairman—already so successful and wealthy—to still study so diligently. A role model for us all! However, half an hour passed, and the chairman showed no sign of acknowledging him. Could it be the chairman didn’t realize I’m here? But Glett didn’t dare make a sound—he’d heard the chairman’s temper could change without warning. If he disturbed him, his promotion might vanish instantly. And so, the over-200-pound Glett endured, standing for forty-five minutes until he was about to faint, when the chairman finally looked his way. … “Well, well, the tables have turned.” Looking at the familiar fat pig before him, Chen Qi felt a mix of emotions—but mostly joy. Overtime every day, cutting my salary, making me take the blame… He still remembered the day he was fired—this very man had toyed with him the same way. “Chairman, I—” Seeing the chairman finally acknowledge him, Glett prepared to unleash his flattery skills in full, ready to heap on the praise. He’d heard the chairman liked “compliments,” and today was his chance to shine. “Congratulations, Glett.” Chen Qi spoke solemnly, and Glett felt excitement surge through his toes. “You’re fired.” “Pack your things and get out—now.” The familiar words echoed in Glett’s ears. He had spoken them many times to subordinates himself. His favorite thing was seeing useless people’s faces twist in anger and despair. Only now, it was his turn. “Chairman, I—” The bolt from the blue left Glett completely dumbfounded. But Chen Qi had no intention of hearing his pleas or explanations—he wasn’t interested in savoring another’s despair. This was just about venting for his past self, nothing more. “Security, escort this man out.” Chen Qi waved dismissively, sending away the utterly crushed Glett. In the hallway, Glett once again felt the eyes of the entire company on him—only this time they were full of mockery and schadenfreude. After dealing with this trivial matter, Chen Qi moved on to clearing up Erand’s “girlfriends.” He had more important challenges ahead—like Hu Wanhai of the Fire Fox g**g—so he had no time for distractions. Chen Qi’s approach was simple: send a mass breakup text and prepare a little “compensation.” Although Jomoya was tall and handsome, Erand’s terrible behavior meant his girlfriends didn’t love him much. Some even hated him enough to wish him dead. In the end, after an hour of verbal sparring, Chen Qi spent a bit of money to resolve the issue completely. Next, he mobilized the full power of the company. He did two things: first, he pressured the police to take action against the Fire Fox g**g. He knew it wouldn’t have much effect, but it was a preemptive move—to make trouble for them before they could cause trouble for him. Then, he hired a very capable private investigator, offering a generous payment for Hu Wanhai’s complete dossier before dinner. Money worked wonders. Chen Qi had barely finished organizing his study materials when the reputedly skilled investigator arrived. … “Mr. Jomoya, here’s the complete file on Hu Wanhai you requested.” Tarreno Jeek placed a thick stack of documents on Chen Qi’s desk, covering Hu Wanhai’s life from childhood to the present, complete with photos from every stage. One might even say Hu Wanhai himself didn’t know this much about his own life. Chen Qi skimmed through, confirming some of his suspicions, then tossed the file aside. “Here’s your reward.” Sensing he might use the man’s skills again, Chen Qi generously wrote a check for 100,000 yuan—a mere trifle for him now. … “Thank you for your generosity. While investigating Hu Wanhai, I also came across this. “You might find it interesting.” Tarreno didn’t seem overly excited about the extra reward. After a few taps on his smart communicator, Chen Qi received a video file. Chen Qi gave him a meaningful glance, then opened the video. The footage showed a private club where g**g members were gathered. Jomoya Chris’s hands gleamed with deadly light as he slaughtered through the crowd, blood and flesh flying everywhere. String Strangulation: Turning invisible puppet threads into metallic wires, they can be controlled at will to strangle prey. As the skill’s current owner, Chen Qi couldn’t mistake it. Erand really had been reckless. Storming the enemy’s base alone—it was no wonder he’d been taken down. Sure enough, after slicing off Hu Wanhai’s nose, Erand was shot in the heart by a large-caliber pistol. Still, Erand’s speed in the footage was impressive—Hu Wanhai’s underlings kept firing, but he dodged them all. He had reason to be confident charging into the enemy stronghold. Unfortunately, his luck ran out in the end—he failed to take Hu Wanhai’s head and was killed instead.
