Chapter 2

Emma was nervous as she turned to face Alexander. His expression changed, looking all upset and worried. She immediately forced a smile, hoping it would mask the turmoil inside her. “What is it?” she asked, trying to sound casual. Alexander looked at her closely, his eyes focusing on hers. “Where were you last night? I stayed up late waiting for you to get back home, but you didn't. I even called you severally, but it kept going to voicemail.” Emma hesitated, her mind racing to come up with a convincing excuse. “I needed some air, so I went for a walk and then ended up at my friend's place, Mia’s. We talked, had drinks, and when I wanted to leave for home, I noticed it was late and decided to spend the night at her place.” “And what about the missed calls?” He sounded curious, his tone skeptical. “You didn't bother to call me back or even pick up when I tried to reach you.” “I’m sorry,” Emma replied, trying to keep her voice steady. “I just needed to clear my head after our argument, so I wasn't paying attention to my phone.” Alexander sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Emma, I know things have been difficult between us lately, and I’m sorry for laying my hands again on you, but that's because you keep bringing up my family into our every discussion. “I’m sorry, ok. But we need to communicate better. I don’t want us drifting further apart.” Emma nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. “I know, Alex. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kept you worried all through the night.” He stepped closer, his expression softening. “I want us to work, Emma. I really do. But it feels like we’re always at odds.” Emma swallowed hard, wishing she could tell him the truth about her night with Ryan. But the fear of his reaction held her back. “We’ll figure it out, Alex. We just need to try harder.” Alexander nodded, though his eyes still held a trace of doubt. “I hope so. I really do.” Just as he was about to say something more, Emma’s phone buzzed again. She glanced at it, her heart sinking as she saw another message from Ryan. “Yesterday was fun; let me at least see you one more time.” “Who is it?” Alexander asked, noticing her distraction. “Just a Mia,” Emma lied, confirming I got home safely. “I’ll call her later.” Alexander didn’t press further, but the tension between them lingered. He leaned in and kissed her forehead. “I’m heading back to the office; I have some meetings to attend. Let’s talk more tonight.” Emma nodded, watching him leave. As soon as the door closed behind him, she let out a shaky breath and checked her phone. Ryan’s messages were buzzing her phone. 'Like, why send this much message to someone you just met for a few hours?’ She murmured to herself. She dialed his number immediately, her expression furious, waiting for him to answer. She had to warn him before Alexander began to suspect anything. “Hey Emma,” glad to finally hear from you. I..” She cut him off before he could continue his speech. "Ryan, please stop texting or even try calling me. I made it clear to you last night that I was engaged and what happened was just a one-time thing, she explained with worries in her tone, even though she clearly knew she enjoyed every moment with him. time thing between us. We were both wasted. I don’t want to jeopardize my relationship with Alex.” She explained with worries in her tone, even though she clearly knew she enjoyed every moment with him. She had not felt the way she did with him for a very long time. But she knew keeping him off was the best thing to do. "Emma, let's just meet up and talk about what happened," he responded with concern in his voice. Before he could say anything else, she hung up the call and dropped her phone. ‘Is this guy nuts or what? What part of my engagement is he not understanding?’ As she stepped back into the bathroom to shower, her mind was consumed by a whirlwind of what-ifs and maybes. The warm water couldn't wash away her worries, and she found herself rushing through her routine, anxious about going to the grocery store. Just as she was drying off, a nagging thought popped into her head: she needed to fill Mia in on everything, just in case Alexander tried to fact-check her alibi for the previous night. She couldn't shake off the feeling that he might try to verify if she was really at Mia's place. She grabbed her phone and quickly called Mia. “Mia, I need a favor. If Alexander calls you, can you tell him I stayed at your place last night? We had drinks and talked until late, so I decided to crash there.” There was a pause on the other end of the line. “Emma, what’s going on? Why do you need me to lie for you?” Emma sighed, looking at the clock. “It’s complicated, Mia. We had a big argument last night, and I just needed to get out and clear my head. I ended up staying out all night, and now he’s suspicious. Please, Mia, just cover for me this one time.” Mia hesitated, then agreed. “Alright, Emma. I’ve got your back. But Emma, where did you sleep though? She asked. Emma sighed remorsefully and said, "No worries, Mia; I will tell you everything when we meet up.” Mia smiled, “Better! Just... be careful, okay?” Emma exhaled a sigh of gratitude as she said, 'Thanks, Mia. I owe you big time.' As she hung up the phone, a wave of relief washed over her. She hurried to finish getting ready, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. What if Alexander actually called Mia? She knew her friend would have her back, but the thought of putting Mia in a tight spot made her stomach twist with anxiety. The guilt gnawed at her. Mia has been her friend since high school, and yes, they have shared a lot of secrets together, and they have been there for each other over the years. She attempted to concentrate on the day ahead as she hurried out of the flat and into the crowded downtown streets. Though the activity and noise were a nice distraction, her mind kept returning to the mess she had made. Her phone buzzed once again as she turned to walk into the supermarket. She hesitated, then glanced at the screen, expecting a call from Alexander or another message from Ryan. However, it wasn't Alexander or Ryan. The message was from an unknown number: "Emma, we need to talk about last night. It's urgent. Meet me at the coffee shop on 5th Avenue at noon. Don't ignore this." Her heart raced as she stared at the screen, her mind whirling with confusion and fear. Who could this be? And what did they know about last night? Emma panicked as she realized things were getting worse. The unknown sender could be anyone—someone who saw her with Ryan, someone who knew too much. She glanced at the time. It was already close to noon. With a mix of dread and determination, Emma turned away from the grocery store and headed towards the coffee shop, knowing that this unexpected meeting could change everything.
