Chapter 4

The evening grew quiet, and with a gentle warmth in the air, Ryan stretched with thought about how his meeting went with Emma that morning. He had gone back home and tried sleeping off the whole thoughts. But the thoughts kept coming with new memories. All his thoughts were about Emma and Alex. Emma being that the one time he spent with her, he has never felt that way with another lady. The warmth, the kiss, the s*x was amazing. He can’t stop thinking about that night. And Alex, the fact that he just slept with his friend's fiancé makes his stomach crumble, even though it was not intentional. A lot kept going through his mind when he checked the time, and it was late. He jumped out of bed to the shower, trying to get ready for his meeting with his client. Ryan entered his car and drove to the arranged meeting spot, a cozy, upscale restaurant named "L'Etoile" nestled in the heart of Manhattan. It was known for its elegant ambiance and privacy—a perfect restaurant. Inside, he spotted his client, Mr. Patterson, already seated at a quiet corner table. Mr. Patterson was a successful entrepreneur looking to finalize a lucrative business deal. Ryan approached the table with a confident walk, shaking Mr. Patterson's hand firmly before taking a seat. "Good to see you, Mr. Patterson," Ryan greeted. "Are the others here yet?" "Not yet," Mr. Patterson replied. "We’re waiting for the other party and their lawyer. Shouldn’t be long." They made small talk, discussing the upcoming deal and the fine details of their negotiation. Just as they were settling into the conversation, Ryan noticed a familiar figure entering the restaurant. His heart skipped a beat as he recognized Alex heading towards their table. "Ryan!" Alex exclaimed, his face lighting up with genuine surprise and joy. "Alex! What a small world," Ryan replied, standing up to embrace his old friend. They hugged warmly, exchanging pleasantries and marveling at the coincidence. Mr. Patterson stood up, clearly intrigued by the connection. "Alex Grayson, meet Mr. Patterson," Ryan introduced. "Mr. Patterson, this is Alex Grayson. It appears we’re not just here for business; we’re also reuniting old friends." Alex shook Mr. Patterson's hand with a firm grip. "Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Patterson. Ryan and I go way back." The business meeting proceeded smoothly. Ryan and Alex worked seamlessly together, their combined expertise impressing both clients. The deal was concluded successfully, leaving all parties satisfied and optimistic about their future collaboration. After the meeting, Alex turned to Ryan with excitement, “You know, Ryan, I want to invite you over to my house this evening for dinner. It's been a long time apart, and that’s a chance for us to catch up properly. Ryan hesitated for a moment, thoughts of Emma flooding his mind. But the curiosity and the pull of their shared past won him over, knowing full well he would need to live his life past that night like nothing happened. "I'd love to, Alex. Thank you for the invitation." "Yes, and that was how I met Ryan after a long while.” Emma and Mia watched attentively as Alex narrates how he and Ryan crossed paths that evening and that he had to invite Ryan for dinner. As they sat down to eat, Alex began sharing stories from their childhood. "Ryan and I were inseparable back in the day," he started, a nostalgic smile on his face. "We built treehouses, explored abandoned buildings, and even tried to catch ghosts once." Ryan laughed, the memories vivid in his mind. "We had some wild adventures, didn’t we? Do you remember the time we got lost in the woods and had to spend the night under the stars?" "How could I forget?" Alex chuckled. "We were terrified, but it was one of the best nights of my life. We talked about our dreams, our futures... and now here we are." Emma listened intently, her emotions a whirlwind. She saw a different side of Alex, a more vulnerable, human side she hadn't seen before. Despite the complicated feelings she harbored, she couldn’t deny the bond between Alex and Ryan. Mia joined in, adding her observations and questions, making the atmosphere lighter and more relaxed. Just as they were all having fun at the moment, Alex's phone buzzed; it was an incoming call. “Excuse me guys, I need to pick this call.” He rushed out with the phone, talking to someone. Meanwhile Emma kept looking at Ryan, and as Mia sensed the tension in the room, she stood up and headed to the kitchen with the disguise of dropping her plate off just so Emma and Ryan would have a moment to themselves. Immediately after Mia left the dinner table, Emma's eyes blazed with fury as she waited for answers, her silence thick with tension. “Ryan, what is going on? What are you trying to do? I thought I clearly told you to stay away from me, and then you ended up showing up at my doorstep.” "Emma, calm down; it was just a coincidence that Alex and I met. And I could say no to his request after a long while.” In the middle of their chat, “Alex came back in with a smile on his face. What’s the chat all about?” "Well, just getting to know how a beautiful lady like this ended up with a troublesome guy like you, Alex.” They all giggled, but the tension between Emma and Ryan lingered. In the midst of their chat, Alex came back in with a smile on his face. “What’s the chat all about?” Ryan quickly replied, “Well, just getting to know how a beautiful lady like this ended up with a troublesome guy like you, Alex.” They all giggled, but the tension between Emma and Ryan lingered. As they continued with dinner, Alex's face suddenly began to reminisce back to their childhood. He looked at Ryan with a contemplative expression. "Ryan, do you remember the memory box we buried in the backyard of my old house?" Ryan's eyes widened in surprise. "I had completely forgotten about that! We were, what, ten years old?" "Yeah, ten," Alex confirmed. "We wrote down our dreams, our secrets, and buried them, promising to dig it up when we were adults." Emma and Mia exchanged curious glances. "Did you ever dig it up?" Mia asked. Alex shook his head. "No, the house was sold shortly after Ryan moved to England. I always wondered what happened to that capsule." Ryan looked intrigued. "You know, the house was bought by a friend of my family. I still have contact with them. Maybe we can finally dig it up." Emma felt a chill run down her spine, sensing that the past was about to unravel in unexpected ways. "You should," she said, trying to sound casual. "It would be interesting to see what you two wrote back then." Alex smiled, the idea clearly appealing to him. "Let's do it. I'll call the current owners tomorrow and see if we can arrange a visit." The rest of the evening passed in a blur of childhood stories and laughter. But as Emma lay in bed that night, her mind couldn't stop racing. Ryan’s visit, and now the whole idea of digging up a memory box. All the thoughts made her feel uneasy. But then, come to think of it, what secrets had Alex and Ryan buried all those years ago? And how might they impact the present? The next morning, Alex excitedly called the current owners of his old house. They were more than happy to let him and Ryan come over to dig up the backyard. That afternoon, the two old friends, along with Emma and Mia, drove to the house. The current owners welcomed them warmly and led them to the backyard. Alex and Ryan used shovels to dig where they thought it was. After a few minutes, they found something hard. They dug it up slowly and found an old metal box. They were excited but also a little scared. They opened the box carefully. Inside were faded pieces of paper, small trinkets, and a photograph. Ryan picked up the photograph, his face turning pale. It was a picture of them with a third boy, someone neither of them had mentioned before. Emma noticed Ryan's reaction. "Who is that?" she asked, pointing to the boy in the photo. Ryan and Alex exchanged a glance, their expressions darkening. "That's Michael," Alex said quietly. "He was our best friend. The group fell silent, the weight of the past pressing down on them. Emma felt a chill run down her spine. The innocent childhood adventure had taken a sinister turn. What had happened to Michael? And why had they never spoken about him? He... There was an incident, and then he died." Emma and Mia's eyes widened open. “Died?” Emma muttered, “What happened? How did he die?” Ryan and Alex exchanged nervous glances, their eyes darting away from Emma's questioning gaze.
