Chapter 3

The Westbrook estate was transformed into a dazzling venue for the annual charity gala. Glittering chandeliers hung from temporary structures, their light casting a warm glow across the room, while fairy lights lined the pathways outside, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The guests, dressed in their finest, murmured softly as soft classical music filled the air. The night promised elegance, but beneath the surface, something darker seemed to stir. Liam stood by Aurora’s side as they entered the grand hall, his hand gently resting on her elbow. She wore the emerald-green gown they had chosen together, the fabric flowing with each step. Under the soft lighting, she looked radiant, but as her eyes scanned the opulence of the estate, a shadow of doubt flickered in her gaze—unseen by others, but unmistakable to her. “This is incredible,” Aurora whispered, her voice laced with awe. The grandeur of the estate never failed to impress her, but tonight, it felt different—almost as though it were too much, too perfect. Liam smiled, a hint of pride in his expression. “It’s my parents’ way of making an impression,” he said with a touch of humor. “But you look… perfect tonight.” Aurora glanced at him, a slight blush coloring her cheeks, but her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Thank you, Liam. For everything.” Before he could respond, the sound of a familiar voice cut through the air, smooth and assured. Mateo entered the hall with his trademark confidence, his sharp suit accentuating his effortless charm. He moved through the crowd like a seasoned socialite, drawing smiles and laughter from those he greeted. His eyes, however, were fixed on Aurora, and when they met, he made his way toward her, his presence commanding the room in an almost unnerving way. “Aurora,” Mateo greeted her, taking her hand in his with practiced grace. He pressed a light kiss to her knuckles, his smile warm but carrying an edge that Aurora couldn’t quite place. “You look breathtaking. Doesn’t she, Liam?” Liam’s jaw tightened, though he managed a tight nod. “She does.” Mateo’s gaze lingered on Aurora as he continued, “I’m sorry I couldn’t join you for the shopping trip. But I’m glad Liam was there to help.” Aurora forced a smile, but a flicker of suspicion crossed her mind. “It’s fine, Mateo. Liam was great company.” Mateo’s smile remained unchanged, though something unreadable flickered behind his eyes. “Of course he was. Shall we mingle?” Aurora hesitated, her gaze flicking briefly to Liam before she replied. “Actually, I’d like to thank Liam’s parents first. They’ve been kind enough to invite me.” “A wise decision,” Liam said smoothly, stepping in before Mateo could insist further. “They’re in the main hall. I’ll take you to them.” Mateo’s smile faltered ever so slightly, but he nodded with grace. “Don’t keep her too long, Westbrook.” Liam ignored the faint edge in Mateo’s tone as he guided Aurora toward his parents, their stature commanding attention from the crowd. Aurora’s nerves prickled as they approached, but Mrs. Westbrook’s warm smile eased her tension. “Aurora,” Mrs. Westbrook said, extending her hands. “It’s lovely to see you again. You look stunning, my dear.” “Thank you, Mrs. Westbrook,” Aurora replied, her voice sincere despite the unease lingering in her chest. “And thank you for inviting me. This event is incredible.” “We’re delighted to have you here,” Mr. Westbrook added, his voice rich with authority. “Liam speaks very highly of you.” Aurora glanced at Liam, who offered a small, reassuring smile. “That’s kind of him. He’s been a great friend.” Mrs. Westbrook studied Aurora for a moment, her gaze thoughtful. “Aurora, would you mind helping me with something later? There’s a matter I’d like to discuss with you.” Aurora’s curiosity piqued. “Of course, I’d be happy to help.” Mrs. Westbrook’s smile deepened, though her eyes held an unspoken weight. “Thank you, dear. And Aurora, stay close to Liam tonight. It’s always good to have someone you trust by your side.” The words lingered in the air, heavy with meaning. Aurora looked to Liam, who met her gaze with a quiet reassurance, though his expression hinted at something he hadn’t shared. As the evening progressed, the tension between Mateo and Liam became more palpable. Aurora found herself reluctantly swept back into Mateo’s orbit. He was charming, attentive, and disarmingly magnetic, but every time he spoke, a nagging doubt began to creep into her mind. His compliments were too polished, too practiced, and his attention, while flattering, seemed to slip away just as quickly as it was given. The more she observed, the more she sensed something hollow beneath his confident exterior. When the music shifted to a slow waltz, Mateo extended his hand toward her with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “May I have this dance?” Aurora hesitated, her fingers trembling ever so slightly as she placed her hand in his. “Of course.” As they moved across the floor, Mateo’s charm was undeniable. He spoke softly, his words laced with flattery and humor, but there was an underlying sense of performance—every glance and gesture felt choreographed, as though he was playing a part. Aurora couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that she was being carefully maneuvered, a piece to be won in some unspoken game. When the song ended, Liam appeared at the edge of the dance floor, his presence a welcome steadiness amidst the turmoil of her thoughts. “Aurora, would you honor me with the next dance?” Mateo’s smile faltered for a moment, but he stepped back with grace. “I’ll leave her in your capable hands.” Aurora placed her hand in Liam’s, and as they began to dance, a wave of calm washed over her. Liam’s presence was grounding, steady—everything Mateo wasn’t. They danced in silence for a few moments, and then Aurora spoke, her voice soft. “Liam, your parents are wonderful. Your mother asked me to help her with something later. She… also said I should stay close to you tonight.” Liam’s grip on her hand tightened ever so slightly, his gaze meeting hers. “She worries about a lot of things. But I’m glad you’re here, Aurora. It means a lot to me.” Aurora smiled, though the heaviness in her chest remained. The dance ended too quickly, and Liam led her off the floor, his hand lingering at the small of her back. The evening wore on, and as guests began to depart, the glittering lights outside dimmed, but the storm inside Aurora’s heart only seemed to grow. She stood on the terrace, gazing out at the moonlit gardens, lost in thought. Mateo approached, his voice smooth, yet somehow too insistent. “Penny for your thoughts?” She turned to him, offering a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Just taking it all in. Tonight was… incredible.” Mateo’s presence was magnetic, his charm unrelenting. “It’s even better with you here.” Aurora’s smile faltered slightly as the doubts she’d been pushing aside rose again. But before she could voice them, Mateo took her hand, his touch firm but gentle. “Let’s not waste a moment, Aurora. Life’s too short for doubts.” As he led her back inside, Aurora couldn’t shake the feeling that she was standing at a crossroads. One path was clear—a future with Liam, steady and sure. The other, tempting and uncertain, led to Mateo, a man whose charm now felt more like a performance than genuine affection. And yet, despite the allure of the unknown, it was Liam’s quiet, unwavering presence that made her heart ache. The duality of appearances and hidden truths had never been so clear to her. She was torn, caught between two worlds—one offering clarity, the other laced with doubt.
