“Yeah.”’He shrugged. "We're adults."
"So..." I stared at him for a moment.

"No hidden history?" I asked and he shook his head "No complicated feelings?"

"No secret almost-relationship?"
“What?” He laughed. "No."
"You answered those awfully quickly." I narrowed my eyes suspiciously.
"Because they're true." He grinned, and without warning, something inside my chest quietly unknotted. Hell, I hadn't even realized how tightly I'd been holding that particular worry until it disappeared and the realization startled me.
Why did that make me feel so much better?
I quickly looked away before he could read my face.

"I am not relieved." The answer tumbled past my lips faster than I could catch them.
