Gills was so stupid that he couldn’t understand what Artiom was saying, and he didn’t even try to defend his ration. Artiom didn’t need him to understand; he was just amusing himself. He gave the vinaigrette to little Philip. He didn’t want to take it. Artiom just dumped Gills’s portion into little Philip’s bowl and brought the empty bowl back to the gangster. He extended it: take it. Gills decided to belatedly show his character; he didn’t take the bowl. Artiom couldn’t restrain himself and sharply struck Gills on the head with the empty bowl. Gills grimaced from the unexpectedness; the stitches on his lips came apart and blood flowed out. Having gotten his fill, Artiom went to his couch, lay down, watching after the gangster. He was shaking and in pain. Finally losing his patience
