He noticed a sign on it, carved out with an axe. A bit more confidently, he cleaned off the seaweed that had stuck on it and read the following: “Save us. Solovki.” Every “s” was sharp, like an arrowhead. He thought for a short while and with unexpected anger rolled the log back into the sea, as though someone could have seen him reading this dangerous sign and he had to quickly get rid of the evidence. “I can’t read,” he whispered. “That means this wasn’t intended for me…” He pushed the log into the water, and, not looking around, quickly left. At first, he felt that the log, once again returned to the sea, could fly back and strike him in the back … but the feeling passed. There is no sea, no wind, nothing.
