A NEW ACQUAINTANCE

The Nightfang closest to him snarled, jaws snapping. Daniel’s sword met it with a sharp metallic clang, carving a clean arc across its shoulder. The beast yelped and stumbled, stumbling into another, and for a moment, the formation of the pack faltered. The girl’s eyes widened. She took a hesitant step back, still keeping her elemental bursts in motion, though the exhaustion in her movements was clear. Daniel didn’t wait. He lunged again, striking another Nightfang that had circled around her. The beast collapsed, letting out a strangled howl. “Now!” he shouted. The girl’s green eyes locked onto his, comprehension flashing. She ran toward him without hesitation. Daniel grabbed her arm, feeling the tense energy of her small, trembling frame. Together, they sprinted, weaving through the trees, ducking under low branches, leaping over roots and scattered stones. Behind them, snarls and furious howls rose, but the beasts were too disoriented from Daniel’s strikes and the girl’s chaotic magic to pursue effectively. They pushed farther, breaths ragged, hearts pounding, adrenaline singing in their veins. Finally, they reached a small ridge overlooking a calm section of forest. Both of them collapsed onto the soft ground, chests heaving. Daniel’s hand still rested on the hilt of his sword, ready for any lingering threat. She looked at him, wide-eyed and flushed. “You… you just—” she gasped, catching her breath. “You just saved me.” Daniel shook his head. “I didn’t want you to die there. You wouldn’t have lasted much longer.” She paused, finally noticing the faint silver glow along his arms, the energy that pulsed under his skin. “What are… what are you?” He shrugged, cheeks warming slightly. “A human. Like me. You? What were those things you were fighting?” Her green eyes widened in shock, her lips parting. “You don’t know?” “I… I don’t,” Daniel admitted. “I’ve never seen anything like that before.” “They were Nightfang Beasts,” she said, her tone softening. “They hunt in packs, intelligent and deadly. But they are just one part of the war that has been raging in this world for centuries.” Daniel frowned, leaning back against a tree. “A war?” “Yes,” she said. “This is the Twin Moon World. Humans, like you, survive here, but there are others. Beasts like those Nightfangs. Aether Wyrms, serpentine dragons who wield elemental power and are hostile to humans. And my people—the Luminae Kin. We are allied to humans, though not all of us live among them. We are different, and rare.” Daniel studied her carefully, noting her pointed ears and vivid green eyes. He didn’t understand the significance, but something about her aura set her apart. “So… all of this is going on while I’m walking around, thinking the world is just forests and villages?” She let out a small, almost amused sigh. “You humans tend to ignore the storms that swirl around you until they touch your lives directly. You have now stepped into one.” Daniel clenched his fist. “Then I guess I better keep moving forward.” She looked at him, expression curious and calculating. “And where are you going?” “Maybe the nearest city,” he said, shoulders relaxing slightly. “I don’t know yet. I just… have to keep moving.” She tilted her head, smiling faintly. “I see. And I will follow you. You intrigue me.” Daniel blinked. “Follow me? You’re just going to… tag along?” She shrugged, emerald eyes gleaming. “I am not going anywhere else. You seem… different from the humans I have seen. I want to see where this path leads. That is enough reason for me.” Daniel gave a small, tired smile. “Alright. Just… don’t slow me down.” “I won’t,” she said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “But I may ask questions. Many questions.” “Fine,” he said, shaking his head with a laugh. “Just don’t expect all the answers.” She chuckled, a musical sound that blended with the quiet of the forest. “I do not. I will discover them myself.” The silence between them settled comfortably as they continued along the path. Daniel’s eyes flicked to the sword at his side. The weight reminded him of his vow, of the woman he sought to save, and of the storm within him. The forest around them seemed peaceful now, but he knew danger lingered everywhere. “You fought well back there,” the girl said after a moment. “Not many humans could do what you just did.” “I only fought enough to give you a chance,” Daniel said. “You weren’t helpless. You held your own longer than I expected.” She studied him, faintly smiling. “Perhaps. But the world you have stepped into will require more than just instinct and courage. You have lightning in you, do you not? It is rare and powerful, but untamed.” Daniel nodded slowly. “I will learn to control it. I have to.” Her eyes softened slightly. “Good. You will need it.” He looked at her. “What about you? What are you called?” “Names do not matter for now,” she said. “I will follow you. Call me whatever you like.” “Alright,” Daniel said, feeling the weight of trust and alliance settle between them. “Then… let’s move.” They walked in tandem, the forest gradually thinning as the day progressed. The path ahead would take them to the outskirts of civilization, to the nearest city where their first real challenges would await. The Nightfangs were behind them, but the Twin Moon World was vast, filled with danger, intrigue, and war. Daniel’s mind drifted briefly to the woman he had sworn to save. Every step he took, every breath he drew, reminded him of the promise he had made. He did not yet know the full scale of the world he had entered, but with the girl beside him, with her curiosity and elemental power, he felt ready to face whatever lay ahead. And so, they continued together, two figures walking into the unknown, the sun rising higher, casting golden light through the thinning forest, illuminating the path to the nearest city—and to the first steps of a journey that would change everything.
