Subject One I

Subject One I The words stayed between them. **You did.** Elena stared at Daniel. Neither moved. The storage facility suddenly felt too small. Too quiet. "Say that again." Daniel swallowed. "You killed Emily." Elena shook her head. "I don't remember her." "I know." "You just told me I was the fourteenth subject." "You were." "Then how could I kill Subject One?" Daniel looked at her with an expression she couldn't understand. "Because by the time you met Emily, you weren't Subject Fourteen anymore." Elena's grip tightened around her gun. "What does that mean?" Daniel looked toward the open doorway. "We have to leave." "No." "Elena—" "You don't get to keep doing this." "What?" "Giving me pieces of the truth and expecting me to chase the rest." She stepped closer. "Who was Emily?" Daniel looked away. "My daughter." "You said that." "Biological daughter." Elena's face hardened. "How old was she?" "Sixteen." "When did she die?" "March 17, 2023." Elena felt something inside her collapse. The date. The night everything began. She whispered: "Sarah's disappearance." Daniel nodded. "Yes." "And you think I killed your daughter." "I know you did." "Then why are you helping me?" Daniel's eyes filled with tears. "Because you didn't know what you were doing." Elena stared. "Who made me do it?" Daniel didn't answer. "Who?" He finally whispered: "Emily." --- ### THREE YEARS EARLIER Emily Reed sat alone in Room Seven. She had been there for nine days. No windows. No clock. No idea whether it was morning or night. The fluorescent light above her never went off. A camera watched her constantly. She had stopped asking when she would be released. Nobody answered. The door opened. A woman entered. Elena Cross. Emily looked up. "You again." Elena closed the door. She carried a tray. Food. Water. Medicine. She placed them on the table. "You need to eat." Emily laughed. "Why?" "Because you're getting weak." "Good." Elena sat opposite her. "Emily." The girl looked at her. "You know my name." "Yes." "Then you know what they do here." Elena didn't answer. Emily leaned forward. "Do you know why you're here?" "Yes." "Tell me." "You were brought here because you know too much." Emily smiled. "No." She pointed at Elena. "I'm here because of you." Elena froze. "What?" Emily whispered: "You're the one who brought me here." --- Elena returned to the present. She was still standing inside the storage facility. Daniel watched her. "Why can't I remember?" "Because they altered your memory." "Again?" "Yes." "After Emily died?" Daniel nodded. Elena closed her eyes. Pieces began to surface. Room Seven. Emily. A tray of food. A syringe. Sarah standing outside the glass. Thomas Reed. Harlan. Daniel. And a red folder. She opened her eyes. "What was in the folder?" Daniel stared at her. "You remember?" "Something." "What?" "A list." Daniel's face changed. "What list?" "Names." "How many?" "Forty-four." He stepped closer. "You're remembering." "No." Elena shook her head. "I'm seeing things." "That's how it starts." She looked at him. "Tell me everything." Daniel hesitated. Then nodded. --- Emily Reed was born in 2007. Her mother died during childbirth. Daniel raised her alone. She was intelligent. Quiet. Obsessive. At sixteen, she discovered her father's connection to Bell Medical. She began investigating. She found files. Names. Photographs. Payments. And one name appeared repeatedly. **Elena Cross.** Emily believed Elena was responsible for the disappearances. So she followed her. She watched Elena. She discovered the hidden rooms. And then she made a mistake. She contacted Sarah Whitmore. Sarah had already been investigating Bell Medical. The two girls became allies. Together, they found Room Seven. And that's where they discovered the truth. Elena had been there before. Years earlier. She wasn't simply a subject. She had become part of the organization. Daniel explained: "Bell used you after they finished experimenting on you." "For what?" "Investigation." "Police access." "Database access." "Evidence manipulation." "They needed someone inside law enforcement." Elena's face hardened. "They turned me into an officer." "Yes." "Why me?" "Because you were already conditioned." "Conditioned for what?" "Obedience." Elena stared at him. "I don't obey people." "Not consciously." Daniel's words were quiet. "They didn't control your entire mind." "They created triggers." "Certain words." "Certain sounds." "Certain people." "And when those triggers were activated..." Elena finished the sentence. "I did what they wanted." Daniel nodded. "Emily discovered that." --- Emily had recorded everything. Every conversation. Every document. Every hidden room. She planned to expose Bell Medical. But she didn't know who she could trust. So she created a dead man's switch. If anything happened to her, the evidence would automatically be sent to several journalists. Sarah was one of them. Ava was another. And the third recipient— was Elena. Elena stared. "Me?" Daniel nodded. "Emily trusted you." "Why?" "Because she believed you were fighting them." "I wasn't." "You were." "Then why did I kill her?" Daniel looked away. "Because they activated you." --- ### MARCH 17, 2023 Emily sat in Room Seven. Sarah stood outside the glass. Elena entered. Emily looked at her. "You came." Elena locked the door. Sarah shouted from outside: "Elena, don't!" Elena ignored her. She approached Emily. "Where is the list?" Emily smiled. "You're not getting it." "Give it to me." "No." "Emily." "You don't even know what they did to you." Elena froze. Emily continued. "They made you forget." "Forget what?" "Your real name." Elena's face changed. Emily whispered: "Elena Cross isn't your name." The trigger activated. Elena's expression became empty. She reached into her pocket. Removed a syringe. Emily stood. "No." Elena advanced. Sarah screamed from outside. "ELENA!" Emily backed toward the wall. "Please." Elena didn't respond. "Elena, please!" The syringe entered Emily's arm. Emily collapsed. Sarah began pounding on the glass. "NO!" Elena looked down at Emily. For one second— something inside her broke. Her eyes filled with tears. She whispered: "I'm sorry." Then she walked out. ---
