--- Daniel stopped speaking. Elena was crying. "I killed her." "You killed her body." "What does that mean?" "Emily had already sent the files." Elena looked up. "Where?" Daniel smiled bitterly. "That's what they were afraid of." "The files were distributed." "To whom?" "Nobody knows." "Then why are they still hunting me?" "Because you have the master copy." Elena stared. "What?" "You took it." "Where?" "Before they erased your memory, you hid it." "Where?" Daniel shook his head. "You never told anyone." Elena closed her eyes. The memory came. A dark hallway. A wall. A small metal box. A key. A number. **7-14-21.** Her eyes opened. "The house." Daniel frowned. "What?" "The room beneath Marcus's house." "What about it?" "That's where I hid something." "What?" "I don't know." --- They drove to Marcus Vale's house. The property was still under police seal. But the seal had been broken. Recently. Elena crouched beside the basement entrance. The hidden corridor was still there. Daniel followed her. "You've been here before." "Yes." "How many times?" Elena stared into the darkness. "More than I remember." They reached Room Fourteen. The room was empty. Except for the chair. Elena examined the walls. Nothing. She looked at the floor. Then the ceiling. Nothing. Daniel asked: "What are you looking for?" "I don't know." She stepped into the center of the room. Closed her eyes. Something surfaced. A voice. Her own. *"If I forget, come back here."* She opened her eyes. "Help me move the chair." They moved it. Beneath it was a metal panel. Daniel pried it open. Inside was a black box. Elena's hands shook. She opened it. Inside were three things. A USB drive. A photograph. And a handwritten note. The photograph showed Elena. But not as a teenager. Not as a police officer. As a child. Standing beside Emily. Both girls were smiling. Elena looked at Daniel. "Why were we together?" Daniel stared. "I don't know." She opened the note. It was written in her own handwriting. **If you're reading this, they failed.** Elena continued. **You will think Emily died because you killed her.** **That's what they want you to believe.** Her breathing stopped. The next line: **Emily was never Subject One.** Daniel stepped closer. "What?" Elena kept reading. **Subject One was the first person to survive the procedure.** **Emily was Subject Zero.** Silence. Elena looked at Daniel. He shook his head. "No." She read the next sentence. **And Subject Zero was never a person.** Daniel stared. "What does that mean?" Elena turned the page. Only one sentence remained. **Subject Zero was a memory.** --- The USB contained a single audio file. Elena connected it to her laptop. Static. Then a man's voice. Arthur Bell. "If you're hearing this, Elena has remembered enough." Daniel stiffened. Arthur continued. "Memory isn't what people think." "People believe memory is a recording." "It isn't." "It's a story." "And stories can be rewritten." Elena listened. Arthur's voice became softer. "We discovered that memories can be transferred." "Not photographs." "Not information." "Experiences." "Emotions." "Fear." "Love." "Identity." Daniel whispered: "What did they do?" Arthur continued. "We created a method of transferring memory patterns between people." "Subject One was the first successful transfer." Elena looked at Daniel. Arthur's voice: "The original subject died." "But the memories survived." "Those memories were transferred into another human being." Elena's face went pale. "Who?" Arthur answered: "Elena Cross." The recording ended. Silence. Daniel looked at Elena. "No." Elena couldn't speak. The USB beeped. A second file appeared. **SUBJECT_ZERO.mp4** She opened it. The screen showed a young girl. Maybe six years old. Standing in a laboratory. A man was speaking behind the camera. "What's your name?" The girl answered: "Emily." "How old are you?" "Six." "Do you know where you are?" "Bell Medical." "Do you know who I am?" The girl smiled. "You're my father." Daniel's face went white. "Emily." But the video continued. The camera moved closer. The girl looked directly into it. Then said: "My name isn't Emily." She smiled. "My name is Elena." Daniel staggered backward. The video ended. Elena stared at the black screen. "No." A final file appeared. **MEMORY_TRANSFER_COMPLETE.** Then another. **SUBJECT 14 ACTIVATION DATE: MARCH 17, 2023.** Elena's breathing stopped. The room seemed to tilt. She remembered. Not everything. But enough. Emily wasn't her victim. Emily wasn't her daughter. Emily was the original consciousness from which Elena's memories had been built. The person she had spent her entire life believing herself to be— had been constructed from someone else's memories. Then Elena noticed one final line on the screen. **ORIGINAL SUBJECT: EMILY REED** **CURRENT HOST: ELENA CROSS** **STATUS: ACTIVE** Daniel whispered: "You're Emily." Elena looked at him. And for the first time in her life— she didn't know which name belonged to her. --- Her phone rang. Sarah. Elena answered. "Hello?" Sarah's voice was calm. "Did you find it?" "Who am I?" Sarah was silent. "Sarah." "You found the truth too early." "What truth?" "You weren't supposed to remember yet." "Who am I?" Sarah whispered: "You're the reason this all started." Elena's heart pounded. "Where are you?" "At the house." "What house?" "The house where they made you." Elena looked at Daniel. Sarah continued: "And Elena..." "What?" "Don't trust Daniel." Elena's eyes narrowed. "Why?" Sarah's voice broke. "Because he knows what happened to the real Elena Cross." The call ended. Elena slowly lowered the phone. Daniel stared at her. "What did she say?" Elena didn't answer. She looked at him. "Who was Elena Cross?" Daniel's face went pale. He stepped backward. "Don't." "Who was she?" "Elena..." "WHO WAS SHE?" Daniel closed his eyes. Then whispered: "She was my wife." Elena froze. Daniel looked at her. "And she died in 2004." The room became silent. Then somewhere behind them— a door opened. A woman's voice came from the corridor. "That's right." Elena turned. Sarah Whitmore stood in the doorway. Alive. Holding a gun. And beside her stood Rachel. But Rachel wasn't looking at Elena. She was looking at Daniel. With hatred. Sarah raised her weapon. "Now we can finally talk about what you did to my sister." Daniel stepped backward. Elena stared between them. "What is happening?" Sarah looked at her. "You've been investigating the wrong murder." Elena's eyes narrowed. "Whose murder?" Sarah answered: "Elena Cross." She paused. "The woman whose identity you stole." Then the lights went out. And somewhere in the darkness— someone began laughing. ---
