Sarah's Last Night II

--- At 3:41 a.m., Elena returned home. Ava refused to come inside. "Why?" Ava looked at the building. "Because they know this place." "Who?" "Everyone." She walked away. Elena entered alone. The apartment was dark. She turned on the lights. Nothing appeared disturbed. She locked the door. Then she noticed something. Her bedroom door was open. She was certain she had closed it. She drew her weapon. Slowly. She walked inside. The room was empty. The hidden camera was still on the floor. Elena picked it up. A small red light blinked. Recording. She connected it to her laptop. A new file appeared. Created ten minutes ago. **WATCH_ME.** She clicked it. The video showed her apartment. Live. Elena watched herself standing in the bedroom. She was watching the video. The camera angle was from inside the room. She looked around. Nothing. Then the video changed. A timestamp appeared. **MARCH 17, 2023 — 11:39 P.M.** The camera showed Elena entering Sarah's apartment. She carried a black bag. Sarah was there. Alive. The two women stood facing each other. Elena watched. Sarah said something. The audio was distorted. Elena turned up the volume. "...can't do this." Sarah said something else. Elena heard: "...you promised." Then Elena in the video reached into the bag. She removed a small syringe. The video stopped. Elena's blood ran cold. "No." The video restarted. Sarah was lying unconscious on the floor. Elena stood over her. Then someone entered the room. Thomas Reed. He looked directly at Elena. They spoke. The audio was clearer now. Thomas said: "Are you sure?" Elena replied: "She'll never remember." Thomas asked: "And if she does?" Elena looked toward the camera. Then said: "Then we'll finish what we started." The screen went black. Elena stepped away from the laptop. Her breathing became shallow. She replayed the video. Again. Again. Again. It was her. Her face. Her voice. Her body. Everything. But she remembered none of it. Then she noticed something. The timestamp. 11:39 p.m. The official report said she entered Sarah's apartment at 11:43 p.m. Four minutes difference. Someone had altered the record. The video continued. A final frame appeared. Sarah's face. Close-up. Her eyes were open. She was conscious. She was looking directly into the camera. Her lips moved. Elena paused. Zoomed in. Played it again. Sarah whispered: "Don't believe her." Elena froze. Her own reflection stared back from the dark laptop screen. Then a voice came from behind her. "You finally saw it." Elena spun around. Nobody. She raised her weapon. "Who's there?" No answer. Then her phone rang. Unknown number. Elena answered. Silence. Then Sarah's voice. "Elena." "Where are you?" "You need to leave your apartment." "Why?" "Because someone is coming." "Who?" Sarah's breathing became frantic. "I don't know." "Sarah, tell me where you are." "I can't." "You have to." "Elena..." "What?" "Listen to me." A pause. "You were right about one thing." "What?" "They are inside the police department." Elena's grip tightened. "Who?" Sarah whispered: "Your partner." The line went dead. --- Elena stood completely still. Daniel. She looked at the laptop. At the video. At the woman who looked like her. At the evidence. At everything she thought she knew. Then her apartment lights flickered. Once. Twice. The power went out. Elena immediately moved toward the door. Her phone flashlight came on. She heard footsteps in the hallway. Slow. Heavy. Someone stopped outside her apartment. Elena raised her gun. The doorknob moved. Once. Twice. Then stopped. A piece of paper slid beneath the door. Elena waited. The footsteps disappeared. She approached. Picked up the paper. Three words. **ASK ABOUT RACHEL.** Elena stared. Her sister. She immediately called Rachel. This time, someone answered. But it wasn't Rachel. A man's voice. Calm. Familiar. Daniel. "Hello, Elena." She couldn't speak. Daniel continued: "You need to stop." "Where is my sister?" Silence. Then: "She's safe." Elena closed her eyes. "Where?" "You don't understand what you're doing." "Where is Rachel?" "You've already hurt enough people." "Daniel—" "Don't come looking for her." "Where is she?" The line went dead. Elena immediately called Rachel again. No answer. She grabbed her keys. Then stopped. Something was wrong. Daniel had said: *"You've already hurt enough people."* Not *"you're going to."* Already. Elena looked back at the laptop. The video was still paused on Sarah's face. She played it one more time. Sarah's lips moved. This time, Elena noticed something behind her. A mirror. And reflected in that mirror— Rachel. Alive. Standing beside Daniel. But there was something else. Someone behind them. An older man. Elena zoomed in. Her breath caught. Chief William Harlan. He was holding a syringe. And on his face was the same expression Elena had seen in the hidden photographs. Not fear. Not anger. Recognition. The video ended. A final message appeared: **MARCH 17 WAS NOT THE NIGHT SARAH DISAPPEARED.** Then another: **IT WAS THE NIGHT YOU HELPED HER ESCAPE.** Elena stared at the screen. The room was silent. And suddenly, the entire investigation changed. Sarah hadn't been Elena's victim. She had been her accomplice. And if the message was true— then Elena had spent three years trying to solve a crime she had already helped commit. The only question left was: **Why had she forgotten?**
