The Dead Detective I At 5:16 in the morning, Detective Elena Cross made a decision that could end her career. She decided not to call the police. Instead, she called Ava Morgan. Ava answered on the fourth ring. "Hello?" "Where are you?" A pause. "Why?" "Because I need you to tell me something." "What?" "Did Sarah ever tell you about my sister?" Silence. That silence was enough. Elena closed her eyes. "Ava." "I don't know what you're talking about." "Don't lie to me." "I’m not." "Then why did you go quiet?" Ava exhaled. "Where are you?" "Home." "Leave." Elena looked toward her bedroom. "Why?" "Because if someone knows you found the recording, your apartment isn't safe." "Daniel knows." Another pause. "What do you mean?" "He called me." "Daniel?" "Yes." "What did he say?" "That Rachel is safe." Ava didn't respond. Elena's voice became colder. "You know where my sister is." "No." "You know something." "I know that Sarah was afraid of Rachel." Elena froze. "What?" "Three years ago, Sarah told me there was someone close to you who couldn't be trusted." "Rachel?" "I don't know." "Then who?" "I never found out." Elena stared at the floor. "Where are you?" "At a motel." "Which one?" Ava hesitated. "The Sandpiper." "Stay there." "Elena—" "I'm coming." She hung up. Then she looked at the photograph on her table. Sarah. Thomas. Harlan. Daniel. Rachel. The faces seemed to form a pattern. A pattern she still couldn't see. She grabbed her jacket. Before leaving, she checked the apartment one last time. Bedroom. Kitchen. Bathroom. Closet. Nothing. She opened the front door. Stopped. On the floor outside was another envelope. Her name was written on it. She picked it up. Inside was a single photograph. Ava Morgan. Standing outside the Sandpiper Motel. Taken twenty minutes earlier. On the back: **YOU'RE TOO LATE.** Elena ran. --- The Sandpiper Motel sat along a quiet stretch of highway outside Clearwater. The neon sign had three dead letters. SANDPIPER appeared as SAND_ER. The parking lot was nearly empty. Elena pulled in without turning off her headlights. Room 214. She found the door open. "Ava?" Nothing. She entered. The room was small. One bed. One chair. A television. A bathroom. Ava's bag lay open on the floor. Her laptop was still running. But Ava was gone. Elena checked the bathroom. Empty. She looked at the bed. A small amount of blood stained the pillow. Not much. Enough. She stepped backward. Her phone vibrated. Unknown number. A text appeared. **LOOK UNDER THE BED.** Elena stared at it. Then slowly crouched. Nothing. She reached beneath the mattress. Her fingers touched something. A phone. Ava's phone. The screen was cracked. One video file was open. Elena pressed play. Ava appeared. She was sitting in the same motel room. She looked terrified. "Elena, if you're watching this, I couldn't wait." She glanced toward the door. "I found something in Sarah's files." Ava lifted a photograph. "I know who Thomas Reed is." Elena leaned closer. Ava continued. "His real name is Daniel Reed." Elena froze. The video continued. "He's your partner." Elena stopped breathing. "No." Ava looked into the camera. "I don't know how long he's been using that identity." "But Thomas Reed was the name attached to several missing-person investigations." Ava swallowed. "Daniel Reed didn't join the department six years ago." "He joined eleven years ago." "He was already connected to Bell Medical." The screen flickered. Ava's voice became quieter. "Elena, there is something else." She looked toward the door. "If Daniel finds out I know..." A loud sound came from outside. Ava stopped. Then whispered: "He's here." The video ended. Elena stared at the screen. Daniel. Thomas Reed. Her partner. The man she had trusted for six years. The man Sarah had warned her about. The man Vincent had warned her about. The man who had been standing in Room Seven. It all pointed to him. But Elena had learned one thing over the last twenty-four hours: The obvious answer was usually the dangerous one. She looked at Ava's phone. There was another file. Audio. She played it. A man's voice. Daniel. "I told you to stop." Ava replied: "You're too late." Daniel: "Where is she?" Ava: "Who?" "Sarah." Silence. Then Ava laughed. "She's closer than you think." The recording ended. Elena stared at the phone. Then she heard a car outside. Headlights swept across the motel room. She killed the lights. A vehicle stopped outside. The driver's door opened. Footsteps approached. Elena moved beside the bathroom door. Her gun was raised. The motel door opened. A man stepped inside. Elena fired. The bullet struck the wall. The man dropped. Elena rushed forward. It wasn't Daniel. It was an unknown man wearing a police jacket. He was dead. A badge lay beside him. Elena picked it up. The name read: **VINCENT SHAW.** She stared. Impossible. Vincent was dead. She had seen his body. The man on the floor wasn't Vincent. But someone wanted her to believe he was. Then she noticed the dead man's face. Scar beneath the left eye. Thomas Reed. The man who had been following her. Elena stepped backward. Her phone rang. Ava. Elena answered. "Where are you?" Ava whispered: "You're looking at him." Elena stared at the body. "Who?" "The man they called Thomas Reed." "He's dead." "No." Ava's voice trembled. "That's not Thomas." "Then who is it?" Ava whispered: "That's the man Thomas killed." The call ended. --- At 7:02 a.m., Elena returned to the station. She had the dead man's photograph. His fingerprints were already being processed. But she didn't wait. She went directly to Records. Daniel's personnel file was still accessible through an old archive terminal. She entered his name. **DANIEL REED.** The system displayed his employment history. Police Academy. 2009. Tampa Police Department. 2010. Homicide. 2014. Promotion. 2018. Detective. Everything looked normal. Too normal. Elena searched for Thomas Reed. Nothing. She searched the national database. Nothing. Then she tried something else. She searched the fingerprint number from the dead man. A result appeared. Elena stared. **THOMAS REED — DECEASED.** Date of death: **October 18, 2011.** Location: **Bell Medical Rehabilitation Center.** Elena leaned back. Thomas Reed had been dead for fifteen years. Then who was Daniel?
