The List I

1153 Words
The List I At 6:03 a.m., Elena Cross stopped believing in coincidences. There were no coincidences left. Not in the photographs. Not in the missing records. Not in the false identities. Not in the room beneath Marcus Vale's house. And certainly not in the woman who had just appeared on her laptop and called herself Rachel. Elena sat alone in the motel room, staring at the black screen. Her hands were cold. Her mind kept returning to the same sentence. **I was the first girl.** Rachel. Her sister. The woman who had been part of her life for as long as she could remember. The woman whose birthday she celebrated every year. The woman who knew the names of Elena's childhood teachers, her favorite books, the house they grew up in, the hospital where their mother died. Rachel couldn't be fake. Could she? Elena reached for her phone. She called Rachel. No answer. Again. Nothing. She opened her contacts. Scrolled to her mother's number. Deleted years ago. Then her father's. Also dead. She stared at the family photographs stored on her phone. Christmas. Birthdays. Graduations. Rachel appeared in nearly all of them. But Elena noticed something she had never noticed before. In every photograph taken before 2005— Rachel was absent. She searched. 2001. No Rachel. 2002. No Rachel. 2003. No Rachel. 2004. Nothing. Then 2005. Rachel appeared. Fourteen years old. Standing beside Elena. Smiling. Elena stared at the photograph. Her fingers began to tremble. She zoomed in. Rachel was wearing a white dress. Around her neck was a silver pendant. Elena recognized it. She had the matching one. She touched the pendant hanging beneath her shirt. They had been given to them by their mother. At least, that's what Elena remembered. She opened another photograph. 2006. Rachel. 2007. Rachel. 2008. Rachel. Always there. Always smiling. Always looking like she belonged. Elena whispered: "Who are you?" A knock sounded. She reached for her gun. Three knocks. Slow. Then a voice. "Elena." Daniel. She didn't answer. "Elena, I know you're inside." She stepped away from the door. "Go away." "I need to talk to you." "You pointed a gun at me." "I know." "You lied to me." "I know." "You've been lying to me for years." Silence. Then: "Yes." Elena's hand tightened around the weapon. "Then why should I open this door?" "Because I know who Rachel is." That stopped her. She opened the door but kept the chain engaged. Daniel stood in the hallway. No weapon. No badge. His face was bruised. There was dried blood at his temple. "What happened to you?" "Long story." "Tell me." "Not here." She stared at him. "You're going to have to do better than that." Daniel looked down the hallway. "Someone followed me." Elena closed the door. Then opened it again. "Get inside." Daniel entered. She locked the door behind him. "Start talking." Daniel sat down. For several seconds he said nothing. Then he looked at her. "Rachel is not your sister." Elena felt the words physically. She stepped backward. "Who is she?" "Her real name is Rachel Morgan." Elena's face changed. "Morgan." "Yes." "Ava." Daniel nodded. "They're sisters." Elena shook her head. "No." "Ava is her older sister." "No." "Elena—" "No." She pointed her gun at him. "You were in that video." "Yes." "Rachel was there." "Yes." "Sarah was there." "Yes." "And Harlan." "Yes." "What happened?" Daniel looked at the floor. "You want the truth?" "I've been asking for it." He nodded. "Three years ago, Sarah discovered Bell Medical wasn't a medical company." "What was it?" "A front." "For what?" "Identity manipulation." Elena waited. Daniel continued. "They recruited vulnerable people. Women without strong family connections. Women with addiction histories. Women escaping abusive relationships. Women whose disappearance wouldn't attract immediate attention." Elena's stomach turned. "They erased them." "Yes." "How?" "Medical records were altered. Government databases were changed. Bank accounts were transferred. Photographs were destroyed. Families were paid." "And the women?" "Some were killed." "And the others?" Daniel looked at her. "They became someone else." Elena thought about the women in the photographs. "The forty-three." Daniel shook his head. "Forty-four." Elena remembered the message. "There were forty-four." "Yes." "Who was number forty-four?" Daniel didn't answer. Elena stepped closer. "Who?" Daniel looked into her eyes. "You." --- For a moment, Elena heard nothing. The motel room seemed to move farther away. "You expect me to believe I was one of them?" "No." "Then what?" "You were never a victim." Elena's heart stopped. Daniel continued. "You were the person they used to test the process." "The process?" "Identity reconstruction." Elena stared at him. "You mean..." "Memory." She lowered her weapon slightly. Daniel said: "They learned how to manipulate memories." "That's impossible." "They didn't erase everything." "What did they erase?" "Specific things." "Like?" "People." Elena's breathing became shallow. "Sarah." "Yes." "Arthur." "Yes." "Thomas." "Yes." "Rachel." Daniel nodded. "And me?" Daniel hesitated. "Especially you." --- Elena sat down. Her weapon remained in her hand. "Why?" "Because you knew too much." "What did I know?" "Everything." Daniel reached into his jacket. He removed a folded piece of paper. "This was recovered from your old apartment." Elena opened it. It was a handwritten list. Names. Dates. Locations. At the top: **PROJECT REMEMBER** Below it: 1. Jessica Moore 2. Megan Carter 3. Angela Brooks 4. Rebecca Hall 5. Natalie Price 6. Laura Bennett 7. Diane Foster 8. Melissa Ward 9. Olivia Hayes 10. Amanda Reed The list continued. Elena counted. Forty-three names. Then a forty-fourth. **ELENA CROSS.** Beside her name was a handwritten note: **CONTROL SUBJECT.** Elena stared at the words. "Who wrote this?" "Arthur Bell." "He's dead." "Officially." Elena looked up. "You think he's alive?" Daniel didn't answer. She looked back at the list. "Why were these women chosen?" "Different reasons." "Explain." "Some were witnesses." "To what?" "Crimes committed by wealthy clients." "Clients?" "Politicians. Businessmen. Doctors. Police officers." Elena remembered Marcus's words. *"Sometimes the monster is the person standing beside you."* "Why erase witnesses?" "Because killing them creates questions." Daniel leaned forward. "Making them disappear doesn't." Elena's eyes remained on the list. "What happened to the forty-three?" "We don't know." "You said some were killed." "Some." "How many?" "Twenty-six confirmed." Elena looked at him. "And the rest?" "Missing." A silence followed. "Where are the records?" "Destroyed." "All of them?" "No." Daniel pulled another document from his jacket. "That's why I came." He placed it on the table. It was a photocopy of a handwritten ledger. At the top: **TRANSFER LIST — FINAL** Elena scanned the names. Several were marked: **DECEASED.** Others: **TRANSFERRED.** Three had a red circle around them. **UNACCOUNTED.** One name made Elena stop. **SARAH WHITMORE.** Beside it: **TRANSFERRED — 03/18/23.** Elena's heart raced. "Sarah was transferred." "Yes." "Where?" Daniel pointed to the bottom of the page. A location was written there. **SITE 9.** Elena looked up. "Where is Site 9?" "That's the problem." "What?" "Site 9 doesn't exist." ---
