The Man Everyone Loves II

--- At 11:06 p.m., Elena went back to the station. She wasn't supposed to. Her badge had been temporarily deactivated. Her access to the case files had been revoked. She used a side entrance. Inside, the building was almost empty. She went to Records. The old Sarah Whitmore file was still there. She opened it. This time, she wasn't looking for Sarah. She was looking for herself. She searched every reference to March 17. There were seven. One caught her attention. *Supplemental Interview — Detective Elena Cross.* She stared at the document. She had never seen it before. The signature was hers. The report read: > *I arrived at the residence at approximately 11:43 p.m. Detective Cross was accompanied by—* The next page was missing. Elena searched the archive. Nothing. She checked the database history. The missing page had been removed two months after Sarah disappeared. By whom? **William Harlan.** Elena closed her eyes. Then she noticed something else. A handwritten note on the back of the file. She turned it over. Three words. *ASK YOUR SISTER.* Elena froze. Rachel. Why would Sarah's case mention Rachel? She immediately called her sister. No answer. She called again. Nothing. A text appeared. *CALL ME TOMORROW. I'M TIRED.* Elena stared. That didn't sound like Rachel. She called again. Voicemail. "Rachel, it's me. Call me immediately." She hung up. Then the lights in Records went out. Elena froze. She drew her weapon. A door creaked somewhere in the darkness. "Who's there?" No answer. A second sound. Footsteps. Elena moved toward the exit. Then a voice came from behind her. "You always were the stubborn one." Elena spun around. A man stood between the shelves. Thomas Reed. She raised her gun. "Don't move." He smiled. "You finally remember me." "Who are you?" "You know." "No." "You knew Sarah." "I never met Sarah." Thomas laughed. "You really believe that?" "Put your hands where I can see them." He stepped forward. Elena's weapon remained fixed on him. "Stop." Thomas stopped. "You want to know what happened to Sarah?" "Yes." "Then you need to remember March 17." "I don't remember." "I know." "Who erased it?" Thomas smiled. "Nobody." Elena frowned. "You did." "No." "Then who?" Thomas looked at her. "You did." The lights flickered. For one second, his face disappeared into darkness. When the lights returned— he was gone. Elena ran toward the door. Locked. She pulled it. Nothing. Then the intercom came alive. A man's voice. Chief Harlan. "Detective Cross." She looked toward the ceiling. "Chief?" "Leave the building." "How?" "Back door." "You locked it." Silence. Then: "I didn't." Elena stared at the door. She stepped closer. The lock clicked. The door opened. Beyond it was the dark hallway. At the far end stood Daniel Reed. Elena's partner. His gun was drawn. "Elena." She raised hers. "Where have you been?" Daniel looked at her. "I've been looking for you." "Why?" "Because you're in danger." "From whom?" Daniel's eyes moved toward the records room. "Everyone." --- They met in a parking garage beneath the station. Daniel refused to speak until they were inside his car. Then he locked the doors. "I need you to listen." Elena remained silent. "I found something in the old investigation." "What?" "A payment." "To whom?" "Sarah." Elena frowned. "Sarah received money?" "Not Sarah." He handed her a file. Inside was a bank statement. An account had received $250,000 three days before Sarah disappeared. Account holder: *Elena Cross.* She stared at it. "No." "I checked." "I don't have this account." "I know." "Then it's fraud." "Maybe." "Who opened it?" Daniel shook his head. "The account was closed three years ago." "When?" "March 18." The day after Sarah's disappearance. Elena looked at him. "Who transferred the money?" Daniel hesitated. "A company." "Which one?" "Bell Medical Holdings." Elena felt her stomach tighten. Arthur Bell. The dead surgeon. She looked at the document again. "Why would a dead man pay me?" "He didn't." Daniel reached into the glove compartment. He removed another file. Inside was a photograph. Arthur Bell. Standing beside Elena. Elena stared. She had never seen him before. But the photograph looked real. Very real. Arthur Bell had one hand on Elena's shoulder. Both were smiling. On the back was a date. **March 11, 2023.** Elena looked at Daniel. "I don't remember him." Daniel whispered: "That's what scares me." --- The following morning, Marcus Vale arrived at Elena's apartment. She opened the door with her weapon already in her hand. Marcus looked at it. "I understand." "How did you find me?" "I know where you live." "Why are you here?" "Because you're running out of time." Elena didn't lower the gun. "You have five minutes." Marcus stepped inside. He placed a small envelope on the table. "Sarah gave me this." Elena looked at him. "When?" "The night before she disappeared." "You said you hadn't seen her." "I lied." "Why?" "Because I was afraid." "Of Sarah?" "No." "Then who?" Marcus looked directly at her. "Arthur Bell." Elena opened the envelope. Inside was a photograph. Sarah. Arthur Bell. And Elena. All three were standing together. The date was March 11, 2023. Elena stared. "No." Marcus said nothing. "Where was this taken?" "At Bell Medical." "Why was I there?" Marcus sat down. "Because Sarah needed your help." "I didn't know Sarah." "You did." Elena's hands trembled. Marcus continued. "You just don't remember." "Why?" "Because after Sarah disappeared, someone made sure you wouldn't." Elena looked at him. "Who?" Marcus didn't answer. Instead, he reached into his jacket and placed a small cassette recorder on the table. "Listen." He pressed play. Static. Then Sarah's voice. "Elena, if Marcus gives you this, it means I'm dead." Elena stopped breathing. Sarah continued. "You don't know me yet." A pause. "But you will." The recording crackled. "And when you remember, you'll understand why I had to disappear." Elena stared at Marcus. Sarah's voice became softer. "There are people who believe they can control everything." A breath. "Money." "Police." "Politicians." "Doctors." "Judges." "People." Another pause. "But they made one mistake." The recording stopped. Elena stared at the recorder. "What mistake?" Marcus answered. "They underestimated you." Elena looked at him. "You keep saying I was involved." "I didn't say involved." "You said I knew Sarah." "You did." "What happened to my memory?" Marcus stood. "I don't know." "You're lying." "Probably." He walked toward the door. Elena pointed her gun at him. "Don't move." Marcus stopped. "Do you know why everyone calls me a monster?" "No." "Because it's easier." Elena stared. "Than what?" "Than admitting the monster is sometimes the person standing beside you." He opened the door. Then looked back. "Find Room Seven." "We already did." Marcus shook his head. "No." His expression changed. "Not the room beneath the house." Elena's blood ran cold. "The room beneath the hospital." Then he left. --- That evening, Elena drove to an abandoned medical facility outside Tampa. Bell Medical had closed years ago. The building stood behind a rusted fence. Windows broken. Walls stained by rain. She entered through a side door. Her flashlight moved across empty corridors. Operating rooms. Patient rooms. Medical offices. Then she found the basement. Room Seven. The door was unlocked. Inside was a single chair. A camera. A table. And a wall covered in photographs. Elena stepped closer. There were dozens. Sarah. Jessica. Megan. Angela. Vincent. Arthur. Marcus. Harlan. Daniel. Rachel. Her breath caught. Everyone. Everyone she had ever trusted. Everyone connected to the case. And at the center of the wall was one photograph. Elena herself. She was sitting in the same chair. Her wrists were tied. Her face was bruised. And beside the photograph was a handwritten date. **MARCH 17, 2023.** Elena stared. Then she noticed something else. A second photograph beneath it. This one had been taken only hours earlier. It showed Elena standing in the room. Someone had photographed her again. But there was a figure standing behind her. A woman. Elena slowly turned. Nobody was there. She looked back at the photograph. The woman was smiling. Elena recognized her. She had seen her before. In the basement. In the hidden room. In the files. In the old photographs. The missing woman. The woman everyone believed was dead. Sarah Whitmore. On the back of the photograph were five words: **YOU ASKED ME TO DISAPPEAR.** Elena's phone rang. Unknown number. She answered. For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then Sarah's voice whispered: "Elena?" Elena couldn't breathe. "Sarah?" A pause. "Don't trust Marcus." Elena's eyes widened. "Where are you?" "Somewhere you can't find me." "Are you alive?" Sarah laughed softly. Then cried. "That depends on what you remember." "Sarah—" The call ended. Elena stood alone in Room Seven. Then she heard a door close somewhere behind her. She turned. A man stepped from the darkness. Daniel Reed. Her partner. His face was expressionless. His gun was in his hand. Elena raised hers. Neither moved. Daniel looked at the photographs. Then at her. "I'm sorry." Elena's voice shook. "For what?" Daniel's eyes filled with something that looked almost like grief. "For what you're about to remember." He raised his gun. And the lights went out
