---
At 11:47 a.m., Marcus Vale arrived at the station with his attorney.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
Elena entered the interrogation room.
Marcus sat behind the table.
His lawyer sat beside him.
"Detective."
"Mr. Vale."
"You've had a busy morning."
"So have you."
Marcus smiled.
"Mine involves lawyers."
"Mine involves dead people."
The smile disappeared.
Elena sat down.
She placed Sarah's photograph on the table.
Marcus looked at it.
Nothing.
No reaction.
Elena placed another photograph beside it.
Jessica Lane.
Then Megan Hollis.
Then Angela Price.
Marcus remained still.
"Do you know these women?"
"No."
"Have you ever met Sarah Whitmore?"
"Yes."
"How many times?"
"I don't remember."
"You said last night that she was investigating you."
"She was."
"What did she discover?"
"I don't know."
"Then why were you afraid of her?"
Marcus leaned back.
"Because Sarah was not a careful journalist."
"Meaning?"
"She believed everyone who warned her was part of the conspiracy."
"Wasn't she right?"
Marcus looked directly at Elena.
"Sometimes."
Elena studied him.
"Do you know what Room Seven is?"
For the first time, Marcus reacted.
His eyes moved.
Barely.
But Elena saw it.
The lawyer noticed too.
Marcus recovered quickly.
"No."
"You've never heard that name?"
"No."
"Then why did you look frightened?"
"I didn't."
Elena slid Vincent's note across the table.
ROOM SEVEN.
14.
Marcus stared at it.
"Where did you get this?"
"Answer the question."
He looked at Elena.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
"Then explain it."
"I can't."
"Can't or won't?"
"Both."
Elena leaned forward.
"Forty-three photographs were found beneath your house."
"Not my house."
"You own it."
"I didn't build it."
"You knew about the room."
"No."
"Your inspector found it in 2015."
Marcus said nothing.
Elena watched him carefully.
"Arthur Bell."
His face changed.
Not much.
But enough.
"How did you know that name?"
"I read the report."
Marcus leaned back.
"Arthur Bell was a good man."
"You knew him."
"Yes."
"How?"
"He worked for me."
"What did he do?"
"Medical consulting."
Elena frowned.
"You're a real-estate developer."
"Among other things."
"What other things?"
Marcus smiled.
"You'll find out."
---
The interrogation ended ten minutes later.
Marcus left.
His lawyer followed.
Elena remained in the room.
She looked through the glass.
Marcus stopped in the hallway.
He turned.
Looked directly at her.
Then he raised one finger to his lips.
A warning.
Or a request for silence.
Elena watched him leave.
Daniel entered.
"How did it go?"
"He knows something."
"How much?"
"Enough."
Daniel placed a file on the table.
"I found something else."
"What?"
"Sarah's apartment."
Elena looked at him.
"It was searched after she disappeared."
"I know."
"Not completely."
"What do you mean?"
"There was a second search."
"When?"
"Three days after the first."
"Who conducted it?"
Daniel hesitated.
"You."
Elena stared at him.
"No."
"I checked the records."
"I never went back to Sarah's apartment."
"The system says you did."
"When?"
"March seventeenth."
Elena felt something cold settle in her chest.
March 17.
Three days after Sarah disappeared.
She remembered March 17.
She had been at the station all day.
She had interviewed Sarah's editor.
She had not gone anywhere near Sarah's apartment.
Daniel handed her the access log.
Her name was there.
*DETECTIVE ELENA CROSS.*
Entry time:
*11:43 P.M.*
Exit:
**12:17 A.M.**
Elena stared.
"Someone used my credentials."
Daniel nodded.
"That's what it looks like."
"Who had access?"
"Your supervisor."
"Harlan?"
"Yes."
Elena looked at him.
"And you?"
Daniel paused.
"I had access too."
Silence.
Elena closed the file.
"Where was Sarah's apartment?"
"Clearwater."
"Who lives there now?"
"Nobody."
"Let's go."
---
Sarah's apartment building had been renovated.
The old management company was gone.
The new manager barely remembered the case.
But Elena found the apartment.
Unit 4B.
The door was sealed with an old police evidence sticker.
She broke the seal.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Furniture remained.
A bookshelf.
A sofa.
A kitchen table.
A broken television.
Sarah's life frozen in place.
Elena walked slowly through the rooms.
She felt an inexplicable sadness.
Sarah had owned hundreds of books.
There were photographs of family.
A graduation picture.
A framed newspaper article about Sarah receiving an investigative journalism award.
On the wall was a photograph of Sarah and Ava Morgan.
Elena touched the frame.
"She was good," Daniel said.
"Very."
"Did you know her?"
"No."
"Then why do you look like you did?"
Elena ignored him.
She entered the bedroom.
The mattress was gone.
The wardrobe was empty.
Then she noticed the floor.
One board looked newer than the others.
She knelt.
Pried it up.
Beneath it was a metal box.
Inside:
A flash drive.
A key.
And a photograph.
Elena picked up the photograph.
Her heart stopped.
It showed Sarah standing beside Vincent Shaw.
But Vincent wasn't looking at Sarah.
He was looking at the camera.
And beside him stood Elena.
Three years younger.
Elena stared at herself.
She remembered that day.
Except she had never met Sarah.
She had never met Vincent until months after Sarah disappeared.
Yet the photograph proved otherwise.
Daniel took a step toward her.
"What the hell?"
Elena couldn't answer.
She turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
This time, it wasn't Sarah's.
*ELENA REMEMBERED.*
Her hands began to tremble.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"I don't remember this."
He looked at her.
"Maybe you should."
---
The flash drive contained one file.
No password.
No encryption.
Just a video.
Elena plugged it into her laptop.
The screen went black.
Then Sarah appeared.
She was sitting in a dark room.
Her face was bruised.
Her hands were tied.
But she was conscious.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Elena."
Elena stopped breathing.
Sarah continued.
"If you're watching this, they've already found the room."
A pause.
"That's why I chose you."
Elena leaned closer.
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
"I need you to understand something."
She looked behind her.
Then back at the camera.
"I didn't disappear because they kidnapped me."
Elena's blood ran cold.
Sarah whispered:
"I disappeared because I discovered what you did."
The screen went black.
Daniel stared at Elena.
Neither spoke.
Then the video restarted.
But this time, there was no Sarah.
There was another woman.
Older.
Terrified.
She looked directly into the camera.
And said:
"Detective Cross..."
Her voice broke.
"You were there the first time."
The screen went black again.
Elena stared at her reflection.
For the first time, she began to question something far more frightening than who had murdered Sarah.
She began to question whether she had been telling herself the truth about where she was three years ago.
And then her phone vibrated.
One new message.
No number.
No text.
Only a photograph.
It showed Elena asleep in her bedroom.
Taken from inside her house.
The timestamp was *three hours earlier*.
Beneath the photograph were four words:
*YOU WERE NEVER INVESTIGATING THEM.*
A second message appeared.
*THEY WERE INVESTIGATING YOU.*
