Poison In The Kitchen

716 Words
The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the packhouse kitchen. Paige stood by the counter, her hands trembling as she prepared a simple meal. The scent of fresh herbs and simmering broth was meant to soothe, but inside, she felt anything but calm. Her heart ached in rhythms she couldn’t quiet. The betrayal still echoed in her mind—Bobby with Victoria. Yet, beneath the pain, a fragile hope fluttered. The baby growing inside her was a new beginning, a chance to reclaim some part of her shattered life. Victoria’s presence was like a shadow creeping through the walls. The golden wolf wore her dominance with a quiet, cruel grace. Her smiles never reached her eyes, and her touches, though soft, carried a sharp edge. Paige caught the subtle slights and cold glances—the whispered remarks during pack meetings, the way Victoria lingered too close, her fingers brushing Bobby’s arm as if to claim him in silent challenge. Paige’s own wolf growled beneath her skin, restless and alert. One evening, as the pack gathered around the hearth, laughter and chatter filling the room, Paige tried to lose herself in the noise. She hoped the baby inside her would anchor her, give her strength to survive the growing storm. But the fragile thread of hope was fraying fast. After the feast, she returned to the kitchen to prepare Bobby’s meal, determined to hold onto the small sliver of connection that remained. The warm glow of the hearth offered some comfort, butthe room felt too cold, too still. Victoria appeared behind her, the faintest scent of jasmine and something metallic trailing her steps. Her eyes glinted with a dangerous light as she moved silently, a shadow within shadows. Paige sensed the tension before the first words were spoken. "Let me help," Victoria whispered sweetly, her voice soft, smooth but edged with something dangerous. Paige hesitated, then nodded, forcing herself to accept the assistance. The knife in her hand suddenly feels heavy. They worked side by side, but every touch sent a shiver down Paige’s spine—a warning she couldn’t ignore. Their movements were cautious, each action charged with silent tension. Victoria’s fingers brushed Paige’s hand as she reached for a chopping board, lingering just a moment too long. Paige flinched but said nothing, swallowing the rising bile of suspicion. --- Later that night,as Bobby ate the stew, his face twisted in pain. His hand clutched his stomach, eyes darkening with fury and sickness. His color turned pale immediately. “What’s wrong?” Paige asked. “Poison,” he gasped, voice trembling but fierce. Paige froze, terror flooding her veins. “I didn’t….” she began, but Bobby’s glare silenced her. “You did this,” he accused, venom dripping from his words. “Why would you try to kill me?” Her shock turned to desperation. “I would never hurt you. You know that.” “You just did!” Bobby yelled in pain. Hearing the noise, guards rushed in. Victoria screamed, “She poisoned him! She cooked it!” Paige’s eyes widened. “What? No, I didn’t…” “She’s jealous of me,” Victoria cried. “She said she’d make him pay!” “That’s a lie!” Paige yelled. But Bobby wasn’t listening. But Bobby’s eyes bore into her with the cold certainty of betrayal. Victoria stood nearby, the faintest smile curving her lips, a silent witness to the destruction she’d wrought. Bobby’s anger erupted. “I trusted you. I thought you still had some good blood remaining in you.” Paige’s voice broke. “Please, you have to believe me.” “Enough!” Bobby snapped, grabbing her roughly. His pain and rage made him cruel, unpredictable. “You tried to kill me. You deserve to suffer.” The pack gathered swiftly, whispers growing into a roar. Without trial, without chance for defense, Paige was dragged away. The dungeon door clanged shut behind her, cold and unyielding. “You’ll rot here,” Bobby’s voice echoed, final and merciless. --- Darkness swallowed her. The cold stone pressed against her skin. Her wolf whimpered, caged and furious. But within that dark pit, Paige’s spirit ignited. She wasn’t finished yet. Her hands clenched into fists. She whispered, “I’m still here. And I will fight.”
