The Warrior And The Wolf

Paige’s body screamed with exhaustion, but her instincts refused to let her falter. She stood over the chained stranger, chest heaving, blood trickling from her temple. The rogues had scattered like rats after her furious attack, but not before one snarled, “You’ll regret this.” She didn’t care. Snowflakes clung to her lashes as she turned toward the man. He looked up slowly, silver-blond hair matted with blood and dirt, but his eyes—those glacial blue eyes were unnervingly calm. “Are you alright?” she asked breathlessly, crouching beside him. “Better now,” he rasped. Her fingers trembled as she examined the silver restraints. They weren’t ordinary chains—Lycan- forged. Suppressing. Burning. Her stomach turned. She reached for the shackles. “Hold still.” “Wait…” he flinched as she touched the metal, the contact sending smoke hissing into the cold air. Paige gritted her teeth, ignoring the sting. “This is going to hurt.” With a sharp yank and a surge of effort, she broke the chain at the center. He gasped, shoulders sagging forward. It took a moment before his hands were free. He looked at her again—this time longer. Curious. “You’re not part of their pack.” “No,” she said softly. “Not anymore.” Silence lingered between them, filled only by the crunch of snow and the distant howl of wolves. Her pulse was still racing, but the man,he was watching her like she’d done something unthinkable. “Why would you help me?” he finally asked. Paige hesitated. “Because no one helped me when I needed it.” He nodded once, as if he understood more than she said. Suddenly, a deep growl rumbled from the trees, and within seconds, three wolves massive and midnight black emerged from the shadows. Not rogues but Lycans. Elite guards. Paige instinctively stepped in front of the man again. “Easy,” he said, rising slowly. “They’re with me.” The wolves shifted in a ripple of fur and bone, revealing tall men with sharp eyes and armored gear. “Your Highness,” one of them said, bowing. “We tracked your scent. You're injured.” “Thanks to her,” the man nodded toward Paige, “I’m alive.” The guard glanced at Paige, then back at him. “We have a transport waiting. You need healing.” The man—no, the prince looked at Paige again. “You’re coming with us.” She blinked. “What?” “You helped me. You’re injured. You’re not safe out here alone.” “I—I don’t belong…” “You do now.” —- The Lycan territory was nothing like her old pack land. It was colder, quieter, and somehow more alive. Their walls weren’t built from dominance and pride, they were fortified by strength, unity, and something deeper: purpose. They brought her to a healing hall tucked in the heart of their fortress-like city. White stonebuildings towered around them, guarded by sentinels and buzzing with whispers. Who was the human girl with their prince? She didn’t care. Her body gave out the moment she stepped through the doors. Warmth embraced her as she collapsed into darkness. When she awoke, two days had passed. Soft furs lined the bed, and the smell of herbs lingered in the air. A woman stood nearby, adjusting bandages on her arm. “You’re awake,” the healer said gently. “You lost a lot of blood.” “My baby…” Paige gasped, sitting up. “She’s fine,” the woman assured. “Still strong. You’re lucky.” Tears welled in Paige’s eyes. Relief,Guilt, and Gratitude. All tangled into one knot. A knock at the door made them both pause. Then he entered. The prince. Clean now, wearing tailored black and steel, his presence filled the room. Not just strength but command. Confidence that wasn’t performative. It was part of him. “You’re awake,” he said. Paige nodded, unsure how to sit, how to breathe under his gaze. “You saved me,” he added, walking closer. “No one’s ever done that before.” She swallowed. “I didn’t know who you were.” “That makes it better.”A flicker of a smile touched his lips, brief but real. “I’m Miguel,” he said after a beat. “Son of King Theron. Crowned Lycan warrior. And you are?” “…Paige.” “Just Paige?” She hesitated. “That’s all I’ve ever been.” He tilted his head. “Not anymore.” —- Weeks passed. They let her stay. She worked in the archives, sorting records by day and walking the snowy training fields at night. The baby grew steadily inside her, her belly a soft curve that reminded her she was still alive, still moving forward. Miguel watched her. Not like Bobby was possessive and prideful but with quiet protectiveness. He never forced himself near. But somehow, he was always close when she needed him. The day her labor began, it was Miguel who carried her to the healing hall. His arms wrapped around her tightly, voice calm as she screamed through the hours. When Lyra was born—small, strong-lunged, with tufts of dark hair and bright, stormy eyes, Paige cried harder than she ever had before. Not from pain. From awe. Miguel held Lyra like she was made of glass. And when Paige awoke that night, he was still there, cradling the baby in silence, moonlight spilling across his face. He looked at her, something unreadable in his gaze. “She’s going to change everything,” he said quietly. Paige smiled weakly. “She already has.” —- One evening, weeks later, Paige sat on the palace balcony, Lyra in her arms, wrapped in soft linen. Snowflakes drifted around them like feathers. The world felt quiet here. Miguel joined her, cloak brushing her shoulder. “Lyra’s sleeping?” he asked. She nodded, brushing her daughter’s cheek. “She likes the cold. Strange, right?” He smirked. “She’s half-Lycan. It’s in her blood.” They sat in silence for a moment. Then he turned to her, his expression unusually serious. “You know,” he said, “I’ve been watching you.” Paige chuckled softly. “I noticed.” “I’ve seen broken wolves before. They either shatter or fade. But you… you fight.” “I had to,” she whispered. “For her.” “No,” he said. “You fought for yourself too.” She met his eyes, and something shifted. The cold around them vanished, replaced by the warmth of a gaze so intense it stole her breath. “You’re not just anyone, Paige,” he said, voice low and certain. “You’re mine.”
