CHAPTER ONE

The man died on his knees. Amara Bello pressed her back against the cold marble wall, forcing herself to breathe normally. The blood spreading across the pristine white tiles didn’t just stain the room, it announced a law she hadn’t known existed until that moment. A law ruled by Dante Romano. Her heart pounded. She had been invited here by mistake, so she thought that mistakes in Dante’s world were rarely forgiven. The gun still smoked in his hand, yet his attention was elsewhere. It was on her. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, his voice a soft threat. Controlled. Calculated. Terrifying in its calmness. “I—I was told to wait,” Amara stammered. The city roared far below, oblivious to the m******e above. She realized, with a shiver, that every instinct she had relied on her entire life was useless here. Dante’s eyes didn’t blink. He studied her as one might examine an insect caught in a glass jar. And yet, there was amusement there too, a predator intrigued by the prey’s first realization of danger. “Now,” he said, “you belong to the mistake.” Her stomach dropped. She had never felt this powerless before. Fear, icy and sharp, crept into her bones. But beneath it, a spark of something else flared, an unwillingness to surrender completely. “Who… who are you?” she whispered. He stepped closer. Every movement was measured, deliberate. “I am the reason you won’t leave,” he said softly. “And the reason you won’t survive if you try.” Amara’s pulse raced. This wasn’t a man who was killed in haste. This was someone who made death an art. And she had just walked into the gallery. “I… I don’t understand,” she murmured, though she understood perfectly. Dante tilted his head, a slow smirk forming. “You will. Soon enough. Consider this… an orientation.” Her mind worked frantically. Where could she go? How could she escape? Every door looked the same, every shadow seemed to hide him. Lagos, for all its chaos below, was irrelevant here. Only he mattered. “You have two choices,” he said, his voice a whisper that carried the weight of inevitability. “Run and die. Or stay and learn your place.” Amara swallowed. Every survival instinct screamed at her to flee. And yet, the truth was undeniable: she could not outrun this man. Not tonight. Not ever, perhaps. She drew a breath, trembling but determined. “I… I’ll stay,” she said, though she didn’t yet know what staying would cost her. Dante’s smirk widened. “Good. We begin.” The lounge was silent except for the faint hum of the city below. Amara felt each step echo ominously. Her eyes flicked over every detail: the furniture, the glass panels, the barely noticeable exits. Every shadow could hide a threat; every corner could be her doom. “You are studying me,” Dante observed, as if reading her thoughts. “Smart. But too slow. Speed will save you more than observation.” Amara bit her lip. She didn’t know whether to feel insulted or terrified. “I… I just want to survive,” she said. The words sounded pitiful even to her own ears. He moved closer, close enough that the faint scent of his cologne mixed with something sharper, almost dangerous. “Survival isn’t a gift, Amara. It’s earned. And lessons… they can hurt.” He let the words hang like a blade. Her stomach tightened. She realized she had to decide quickly: freeze, run, or play along. Every option felt like walking a tightrope over a pit of vipers. “Then… I’ll learn,” she whispered. “Good,” he said again. “But learning is only half the challenge. The rest… is about endurance.” Amara’s eyes widened. Endurance. She had survived city life, corporate power struggles, and personal betrayals, but nothing like this. This was a predator’s world, and she had stumbled into it unarmed. Dante stepped back slightly, giving her a moment to process. The quiet was oppressive, but it was also revealing. He wanted her to feel the weight of the world she had entered. And she did. Every fiber of her screamed that tonight, nothing would ever be the same. “I will watch you,” he said finally, voice lower, almost intimate. “Your mistakes. Your fears. And maybe… your courage.” He smiled faintly. “You intrigue me, Amara. That is the only mercy you have.” Amara’s mind raced. She forced herself to take note of everything—every exit, every shadow, every object that could be used as a weapon. She calculated, measured, and strategized in the midst of her fear. One wrong move, one misstep, and she would join the man on the floor. But if she learned quickly… Maybe she could survive. A faint noise made her flinch. Dante’s head turned, and she realized he was testing her: every twitch of muscle, every breath, every hesitation was being observed. This wasn’t just about control; it was a game, and she didn’t know the rules. “Tell me,” Dante said suddenly, his eyes glinting. “Why are you so calm under pressure?” Amara hesitated. Calm? She wasn’t calm. But if he thought she was, maybe it would buy her time. “I… I’ve faced worse,” she said, her voice steady despite the tremble in her fingers. Dante’s lips curved. “Perhaps. But nothing like me.” His gaze pierced her, and she understood exactly what he meant. Survival was not just about strength; it was about adaptability. And he was the measuring stick. Minutes, hours—passed in silence. The city roared below, indifferent to the deadly lesson above. Dante’s shadow lingered near her, a constant reminder that control had a face. Amara’s mind sharpened. She cataloged every movement he made, every subtle gesture, every shift in tone. Lessons weren’t just given, they were learned. And she was learning. Finally, Dante moved toward the private door that led deeper into the lounge. He glanced back at her, his eyes catching hers with a spark of… something she couldn’t name. Command, amusement, or something darker she didn’t know. “Come,” he said. “Your lesson isn’t over. Not yet.” Amara’s legs trembled, but she followed. Each step was careful, deliberate. Every sense is alert. She realized, coldly, that she had entered the Devil’s world, and survival meant understanding his rules. And this was just the beginning.
