The Hamptons estate makes the Vale mansion look like a starter home.
Charles Ashford's compound sprawls across twelve acres of manicured lawns, imported marble fountains, and security checkpoints that would make the Pentagon jealous. The main house—if you can call a fifty-thousand-square-foot mansion a "house"—glows with golden light, every window filled with the city's most powerful people sipping champagne and trading secrets.
And somewhere inside, the man who killed my parents is toasting to his own brilliance.
"You're brooding again."
Isabella's voice comes through my earpiece, smooth as silk. She's already inside—entered forty minutes ago on the arm of Daniel Vale, playing the role of the grieving heiress seeking comfort from her newly discovered half-brother. It's a good cover. Nobody questions family.
"I'm not brooding. I'm strategizing."
"Same thing, different word." A pause. "I can see you from here, you know. Standing by the hedge maze, looking like you want to murder someone."
"I do want to murder someone."
"Save it for Ashford. I've got eyes on him. He's in the ballroom, holding court with a senator and two oil executives."
I adjust my cufflink—a tiny camera that feeds directly to Priya's monitoring station—and scan the perimeter. Six guards visible. Probably another dozen undercover. Ashford doesn't take chances.
"Daniel's heading to the security hub," Isabella continues. "He'll disable the cameras in ten minutes. That's your window."
"And you?"
"I'll keep Ashford distracted."
"Isabella—"
"Trust me, Adrian. I know what I'm doing."
The line goes silent before I can argue. Which is probably for the best. Arguing with Isabella Vale is like arguing with a hurricane—pointless and exhausting.
I make my way through the garden, avoiding the main entrance. Priya's intel says there's a service door on the east side, guarded by a single sentry. Easy enough to handle.
Wait for it.
The lights flicker. Once. Twice. Then the entire east wing goes dark.
Daniel's signal.
I move.
The sentry doesn't hear me coming. One precise strike to the base of his skull, and he crumples. I drag him behind a hedge, relieve him of his weapon, and slip through the service door.
The interior of Ashford's estate is even more obscene than the exterior. Marble floors. Crystal chandeliers. Paintings that belong in museums, not private collections. The man has spent decades laundering money and building an empire on blood, and this is what he does with it.
Monster.
I move through the corridors, my footsteps silent on the plush carpets. The security hub is on the third floor, according to Priya's schematics. Daniel should already be there.
"Adrian." His voice crackles through my earpiece. "I'm in. Cameras are looping. You've got fifteen minutes before the system resets."
"Where's Ashford?"
"Ballroom. West wing. Isabella's keeping him busy."
Of course she is.
I make my way toward the ballroom, staying in the shadows. Through the open doors, I can see the crowd—hundreds of guests in designer gowns and tailored suits, their laughter echoing off the vaulted ceilings. And there, in the center of it all, Charles Ashford.
He's exactly as the photograph showed him. Silver-haired. Distinguished. The kind of man who looks like he should be running a charity, not a shadow empire. He's smiling at something Isabella is saying, his posture relaxed, confident.
He has no idea.
I wait until Isabella catches my eye—just for a second, just long enough to nod—before I move.
The crowd parts around me like water. I'm dressed in a black suit, tailored to conceal the weapon at my side. I look like just another guest. Just another wealthy parasite feeding off Ashford's generosity.
"Mr. Cross." Ashford's voice stops me cold. "I was wondering when you'd arrive."
He knows.
The crowd continues around us, oblivious. Isabella's face is pale, her eyes wide. Daniel's voice in my earpiece: "Adrian, what's happening?"
"Stay back," I murmur. "Both of you."
Ashford turns to face me fully, still smiling. "You know, I've been watching you for years. Ever since your parents died. Such a tragedy. Such a waste."
"You killed them."
"Did I?" He tilts his head. "Or did I simply... allow nature to take its course? They were getting too close to something they shouldn't have been looking at. Just like Evelyn Vale. Just like you."
My hand moves toward my weapon. "You're going to pay for what you've done."
"Am I?" He gestures around us. "Look at this room, Adrian. Senators. Judges. CEOs. Every person here owes me something. Every person here would protect me without hesitation. What do you have?"
"Me."
Isabella's voice rings out across the ballroom, clear and commanding. The crowd falls silent, turning to look at her. She's standing beside Daniel, her chin raised, her eyes blazing with that familiar fire.
"Ms. Vale." Ashford's smile doesn't waver. "I heard about your father. Such a terrible tragedy. My condolences."
"Save it." She steps forward, her heels clicking against the marble floor. "I know what you did. I know about Black Meridian. I know about the succession fraud. And I have proof."
The crowd erupts into murmurs. Ashford's smile finally falters.
"Proof?" He laughs, but it's strained. "My dear, you're clearly overwrought. The stress of recent events has—"
"Priya." Isabella's voice is ice. "Now."
Every screen in the ballroom flickers. The lights dim. And suddenly, Charles Ashford's face fills every television, every monitor, every display in the room.
"—the Vale operation was a success. Victor's in place. Once the girl is eliminated, the company will be ours. Black Meridian will control the largest technology empire in the country. And no one will ever know."
The audio is grainy, the video slightly distorted. But it's unmistakably Ashford. Unmistakably damning.
"What—" Ashford's face goes white. "How did you—"
"I'm a billionaire heiress with a grudge and excellent hackers," Isabella says. "Did you really think I wouldn't find out?"
The crowd is chaos now. People are shouting, pushing toward the exits. Ashford's security team is moving, but they're outnumbered, outflanked. Daniel has already disabled their communications.
I reach Ashford in three strides, grabbing him by the collar and slamming him against the wall.
"Where's Lucas?"
"I don't—"
"Where. Is. My. Brother."
Ashford laughs, blood bubbling on his lips. "Your brother? He's been mine since the moment I pulled him out of that rubble. I molded him. Trained him. He's not your family anymore. He's my weapon."
"He's your prisoner."
"He's my masterpiece." Ashford's eyes gleam with madness. "And when he finds out what you've done here tonight, he's going to tear your world apart."
"No." I lean closer, my voice barely a whisper. "He's going to help me tear apart yours."

The aftermath
The police arrive twenty minutes later.
Ashford is arrested. His security team surrenders. The guests scatter into the night, already preparing their statements, their denials, their frantic attempts to distance themselves from the man they were toasting just hours ago.
Isabella stands beside me in the grand foyer, watching the chaos unfold. Her hand is in mine, her grip steady.
"You okay?" I ask.
"I should be asking you that."
"I'm fine."
"Liar." She turns to face me, her eyes searching mine. "You found out the man who killed your parents is still alive. You found out your brother is being held somewhere, being used as a weapon. You're not fine."
"I'm functioning."
"That's not the same thing."
I pull her close, burying my face in her hair. She smells like jasmine and champagne and the faintest hint of smoke from the chaos we've just created.
"I couldn't have done this without you," I admit. "Any of it."
"I know." She pulls back, a small smile on her lips. "That's why you're going to listen to me when I tell you to get some sleep. You're no good to anyone if you collapse."
"I don't sleep."
"You do when I'm there."
She's right. She's always right.
"Fine," I say. "But only for a few hours. We need to find Lucas."
"We will." She takes my hand, leading me toward the door. "But first, we need to plan. Ashford was one piece of the puzzle. Cassius is still out there. And if what Lucas said is true, he's the real threat."
"Cassius."
The name feels like a curse on my tongue. A shadow that's been looming over my life for years, orchestrating everything, pulling strings I never even knew existed.
"Priya's already running searches," Isabella says. "If Cassius exists, she'll find him."
"And if she doesn't?"
"Then we'll find him ourselves." She squeezes my hand. "Together."
Together.
It's become our mantra. Our promise. Our vow.
And I intend to keep it.

The penthouse, 3:47 AM
I wake to the sound of my phone buzzing.
Isabella is asleep beside me, her head on my chest, her breath warm against my skin. I reach for the phone carefully, not wanting to wake her.
The message is from an unknown number.
A photograph.
A man. Dark-haired. Gray-eyed. A scar on his left hand.
Lucas.
He's sitting in what looks like a cell—concrete walls, metal door, a single bare bulb overhead. His face is bruised, his lip split. But his eyes are alert. Focused.
And he's holding a sign.
FIND CASSIUS. HE'S CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. TRUST NO ONE.
The text below the image reads:
You have 72 hours. Then he kills me.
I stare at the screen, my heart pounding. Beside me, Isabella stirs.
"Adrian? What is it?"
I hand her the phone.
She reads the message. Looks at the photograph. Then she looks at me, her eyes hard with determination.
"We need to move."
"Now?"
"Now." She's already out of bed, reaching for her clothes. "Whoever sent this wants us to find Cassius. That means they're either helping us or setting a trap."
"Probably both."
"Probably." She pulls on a sweater, her movements quick and efficient. "But if there's a chance we can save Lucas, we have to take it."
"I know."
"Then let's go." She pauses at the door, looking back at me. "Adrian?"
"Yeah?"
"Whoever Cassius is, whoever we're up against—we're going to win. We have to."
I stand, crossing to her, cupping her face in my hands.
"We will," I say. "Because I'm not losing anyone else I love."
She kisses me. Quick. Fierce. Full of promise.
"Good," she says. "Now let's go find your brother."
