Chapter 10 – A Deal with the Devil Alina woke up with a start, gasping for breath. Cold stone pressed against her back. Heavy chains weighed down her wrists. “s**t,” she muttered, her head throbbing. Zara sat across from her, equally chained, though she seemed more annoyed than afraid. “Well, this is new.” Alina’s mind reeled. The last thing she remembered was Lucian’s words, his gaze locking onto her like she was some kind of lost treasure. And then… nothing. Now, she was here. Wherever ‘here’ was. The chamber was dimly lit, lined with ancient-looking torches. The air was thick, filled with something more than just dampness—power. The kind that crawled over your skin and whispered in your ear. “We need to get out of here,” Alina muttered, tugging at her chains. They didn’t budge. Of course not. “You don’t say,” Zara quipped, rolling her eyes. “You know, for an all-powerful, prophesied queen or whatever, you’re getting captured a lot.” Alina groaned. “Not helpful, Zara.” Before Zara could reply, the heavy iron doors creaked open. A shadow stretched along the stone floor. And then—Lucian entered. He walked with the kind of lazy arrogance that came from knowing he had already won. Alina glared at him, refusing to show fear. “You could’ve just asked me out to dinner, you know.” Lucian chuckled. “Oh, Alina. I don’t ask. I take.” Her skin prickled. He was too close now, his presence suffocating. There was something undeniably magnetic about him—something dangerous that made her heart race. And Lucian knew it. “You can fight me all you want,” he said, brushing a strand of hair from her face—an infuriatingly intimate gesture that sent a shiver down her spine. “But you’ll see, soon enough. Your fate was never in your hands.” Alina snapped her teeth at him. Lucian laughed. Actually laughed. “Oh, I do like you,” he mused. She gritted her teeth. “Then you’re going to love the part where I burn you to ashes.” Lucian smirked, and before she could even think about launching an attack—he grabbed her chin. Not hard. Not rough. Just enough to tilt her face up to his. And then he leaned in, close enough that she could feel the warmth of his breath against her skin. “Keep that fire, little queen,” he murmured. “You’re going to need it.” Before she could retort, he pulled back, eyes gleaming. And then, he was gone. The doors slammed shut behind him. Alina exhaled sharply, her heart hammering in her chest. Zara, still chained beside her, raised an eyebrow. “So… are we going to talk about that?” Alina shot her a glare. “Shut up.” But deep down, she knew. Something was changing. And she didn’t know if she was ready for it.
