Chapter 9 – The Chains of Fate
Alina’s pulse pounded in her ears. Caden’s betrayal cut deep—too deep. She had trusted him, relied on him, even felt something more for him. And now… he had admitted it. He had played her.
But this wasn’t the time to break. Not when Lucian Storm stood before them, power radiating from him like a living storm, his gaze locked onto her as if she was already his.
She took a step back, her instincts screaming at her to run.
Then—bam! A sudden impact knocked into her from the side, sending her crashing into Zara.
Caden had moved.
Not toward Lucian. Not toward her.
But away.
The coward was running.
Alina’s breath hitched. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Zara groaned beneath her. “I know betrayal is painful, but could you not throw me around like a ragdoll while processing it?”
Alina scrambled off her, heart racing. Lucian barely looked surprised by Caden’s retreat. Instead, he smiled, slow and knowing.
“I told you,” Lucian said. “You were never free, Alina. He was just leading you to me.”
Alina clenched her fists. She could still feel the residual energy from her last attack, crackling beneath her skin. She wanted to use it—to blast Lucian into oblivion—but something held her back.
His confidence.
It was too strong.
He wasn’t afraid of her. Not in the slightest.
Which meant he knew something she didn’t.
“I am done being a pawn in someone else’s game,” Alina spat. “Caden may have played me, but I won’t be yours, either.”
Lucian tilted his head, as if considering her words. “Oh, but Alina…” His voice was silk, dangerously smooth. “You’ve been mine since the day you were born.”
A chill ran down her spine.
And then—darkness.
Pure, suffocating blackness swallowed her whole.
