RAYNA “Divorce?” Cassian grabbed the documents out of my hands, reading it. “You must be out of your mind, Ray. Didn’t I tell you I had a project I’m working on? A scandal like this is going to destroy my company.” He shot. My eyes narrowed, “Your company? Are you serious, Cassian?” “I am serious. If you…had a little bit of dignity left in you, you would do this for me. Afterall, I picked you out of the slums–“ “Shut up!” My scream cut him off. My breath came in short gasps. “I don’t want to hear you say a word about my family. I was doing fine until I married you, and that was when my life tumbled. I gave everything for you, and you repay me by going around with a woman who killed our son? You are a devil, Cassian!” “You can say whatever you want, I’m not getting divorced with you until I sign that contract.” He shot. “Sign it now.” I stepped into his front, stopping him from simply walking away. “What’s going on?” A small voice asked and we both turned, just to see Tahlia right in front of our room. I scoffed lightly. She even knew the passcode to our house? What else is left for her to take away from me? “Tahlia, what are you doing here?” Cassian’s harsh voice instantly switched as he walked towards her immediately. “You are not yet well enough to walk around, you should have called me if you needed something.” “I’m fine. You just forgot a document in my house.” He’d gone to her house last night. I gulped, running my fingers over my hair as tears pricked my eyes. “But what is this that I hear about divorce?” Tahlia asked, walking past him to stare at me. “Rayna, if it’s about what happened yesterday, I’m really sorry. I swear I didn’t mean to come between you both and scatter your marriage.” I stared at her. “You already did.” “Rayna, but–“ “Step away from me.” I warned and she flattened her lips, taking a step backwards. But then– She suddenly fell to her knees, startling me. “Rayna, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have contacted Cassian that night. I shouldn’t have made him come to me yesterday. I didn’t know Ryan would…” Her words trailed off. I didn’t even flinch. Her apologies were meaningless to me. “It’s enough, Tahlia. Just tell Cassian to sign the divorce papers and I’m done with him.” I made my way towards the door and without warning, she grabbed me. “Rayna, please–“ “Let go of me!” I shoved her away lightly, trying to pull away. She stumbled backwards and hit her head on the bed frame. A gasp escaped my lips as she immediately went unconscious. “Tahlia!” Cassian rushed past me, shoving me to the floor, so hard my back hit the door post. He didn’t bother looking at me as panic crossed his face. “Ambulance…NOW!” **** “She’s unconscious.” The nurse said, “But don’t worry, she’ll wake up soon.” My stomach knots as she walked away, and in that instant, Cassian turned towards me, anger evident on his face. “You caused this! How could you push her?” “It’s not my fault. She grabbed me–“ “She was begging you! I didn’t think you were such an evil woman, Rayna. You are so despicable!” He spat, walking into the ward. Nurses turned to look at me, disgust written on their faces. So this is now my fault? All I wanted was a divorce from him. She was the one who got into my house unannounced. “You wench!!!” I had no time to move backwards as Marcelline rushed towards me, grabbing my hair in her palms. “How dare you bring my daughter to the hospital? How dare you wicked woman!” “Let me…go!” I grabbed her hands, pushing her away. She stared at me, arrows shooting out of her eyes and the next thing, she fell on the floor. “Help me out! This woman…married my son and wants to kill me also. Having sent my daughter to the hospital, she wants to take my life…what did I do to you?” I gasped, tears in my eyes as I stared at her. They are turning everything on me, making me look like a bad person. “You are so evil. Having married into our family, you want to take charge…that’s impossible!” She spat. I stumbled backwards, heart pounding, tears blurring my vision. People were beginning to whisper. I turned fully, staring one last time at the two people in the ward. Tahlia was awake now, smiling and getting kisses from Cassian like no other people were in the world with them. She glanced at me and I could swear she smirked right then. Roughly wiping my tears, I stepped out of the hospital. I won’t cry for them. No. It was over with this marriage. “Blue ridge estate.” I muttered as I stopped a cab. Ten minutes later and I stared at the room, where I’d once loved Cassian, where he’d once kissed me and made promises to me never to leave him. A room, where I’d slept in the same bed with him and my son. I won’t stay. I won’t let myself get broken further while watching them get happy with their lives. I was never important in the first place, never meant anything to them. Why stay? I grab the traveling boxes and everything I’d ever spent a dime on in that house, before pulling it out of the house. He could keep the divorce papers, one way or the other, I’ll get him to sign it without ruining my reputation. As I walked out of the gates, my phone buzzed. I swiped green, “Sir?” “Rayna, have you made up your mind? Remember, I told you I still need you here. Marriage shouldn’t take away your right.” In that swift moment, I made a decision. One that could change my life forever and make me climb into the highest society in the world. “You are right, sir. If you permit, I’ll resume on Monday.” “This is not a joke, right?” He asked sharply, “Okay, the cases are waiting for you. We need your smart brain to unravel them.” He said. “Noted.” I turned back one last time as the call ended. I will be stronger. Better. A million times than them.
