Chapter 2: Into the Shadows

The rain began as soon as Elena crossed the boundary line separating Silvermoon territory from the neutral buffer zone. Heavy droplets pelted her thin charcoal dress, soaking through to her skin, but she welcomed the cold. It washed away the suffocating scent of jasmine and rose water that lingered on her skin from the pack house. She carried only a small leather duffel bag slung across her shoulder, containing a change of clothes, a bit of cash, and an old silver medallion her mother had left behind before vanishing years ago. The paved roads faded into cracked asphalt, and soon the neon glow of the Obsidian District rose in the distance through the downpour. Unlike the pristine, gated compounds of Silvermoon, the Obsidian Empire was an industrial sprawl of glass skyscrapers, underground clubs, and rain slicked alleyways. It was ruled by Lucian Vane, an Alpha who ran the city like a corporate syndicate. Here, traditional pack bloodlines meant nothing. Power, business, and absolute loyalty were the only currencies that mattered. As Elena stepped beneath the rusted awning of an abandoned diner on the border, a dark sedan pulled to a smooth stop along the curb. The back door opened. A tall man in a tailored black coat stepped out into the rain, holding a massive black umbrella. He had sharp facial features, cold grey eyes, and a broad chest that exuded an undeniable aura of raw, heavy dominance. "Elena Vance," the man said, his voice deep and smooth like crushed velvet. "You are running early." Elena stepped back into the shadow of the doorway, her hand dropping instinctively to her duffel strap. "Who are you?" "My name is Knox," he replied calmly, taking another step closer. "Second to Alpha Vane. My boss expected Silvermoon would cast you out tonight. He does not like loose ends lingering on his borders." "I am not a loose end," Elena said, her eyes narrowing. "And I have no business with Lucian Vane." Knox let out a quiet, amused breath. "You crossed into Obsidian territory the moment your foot touched this pavement, little wolf. In our city, no unattached stray wanders through without an audience." He gestured toward the open car door. "You can come voluntarily and hear what he has to say, or my men can drag you across the threshold. The choice is yours, but I assure you, the Alpha’s patience is notoriously thin." Elena looked at the sleek dark car, then back at the highway leading deeper into the unknown city. Returning to Silvermoon was impossible. Wandering the neutral zone unprotected would mean death by rogues within hours. "Fine," Elena said, brushing past Knox toward the vehicle. "Lead the way."
