Ayla's Strength

1942 Words
Before Revna shifted, she looked at the six alphas. "When I shift you will be able to speak to Ayla." She looked at Aron, a dark smile spreading across her face before continuing, "If you are scared of me, wait until you meet her." The shift was seamless. No bones cracking as the body contorts to give way to the wolf. A black cloud of smoke engulfed Revna and as the smoke settled to the ground. Ayla stood in her place. The black wolf stood before them, her fur absorbing the dim light of the cave entrance like velvet. Her eyes—those same piercing, purple eyes fix on Adam with intelligence that is entirely separate from the woman who stood there moments ago. 'Which way to your stronghold?' Ayla's voice seeped deep into their bones. "North-east," Adam answers, his voice steady despite the hair rising on his arms. "Follow the dry creek bed down to the valley floor. It'll keep us below the ridge line." Mayson, who had been standing there taking in Ayla, whistled low under his breath, noting the seamless transition. "She is even more imposing as a wolf," the mummers to Raven. Raven just nods, his gaze fixed on Ayla with a mixture of awe and something closer to reverence. "Keep moving," Adam commands the others, then looks back at Ayla. 'You lead.' Ayla nods. Adam doesn't hesitate. He shifts, his body expanding and reshaping with the familiar, brutal rhythm of an alpha change. The massive, scarred grey wolf that emerges stands taller than most, his presence commanding even in the dim light of the cave. He lets out a low, single bark—a signal to the others. The pack falls into formation immediately. Mayson and Raven take the rear, their wolves padding silently through the shadows. Fyre and Nolan flank the sides, ears twitching as they scan the ridgeling for any sign of pursuit. Aron stays tight to Adam's left, his smaller but sturdy wolf moving with careful precision. Adam moves ahead, his nose to the ground, picking up the scent of damp earth and ancient pine. He navigates the rocky terrain with a practiced ease, his paws finding sure footing on the uneven stones. Just as the seven wolves reach the edge territory to the stronghold, Ayla stops suddenly. The smell of two hundred alpha's hits her on the breeze, and she begins to shake and pace back and forth. 'Revna. I don't want to go down there.' Revna's response is a feeling that pulls at the back of Ayla's mind. 'We have nowhere else to go, Ayla. We have no choice.' The pack halts. The sudden stop ripples through the line—Mayson and Raven's wolves slow to a crawl, ears swiveling toward the front. Adam, in his massive grey form, turns his head back, his golden eyes searching for the source of the tension. He picks up what Ayla had picked up. The scent hits him like a wall—two hundred alphas, their combined musk heavy and territorial, radiating from the valley below. It's a wall of testosterone and raw instinct that could make anyone's skin crawl. Adam trots back towards Ayla, stopping a respectful distance away. He lets out a low, rumbling whine — a sound of concern, not dominance. "I understand," he communicates to Ayla, his eyes conveying the weight of his words. "But we can't go back up the mountain now. The trackers will be on our tail by dawn." Ayla pushes on, but her hair is on end. Adam accepts the silent concession. He moves forward, his large paws hitting the ground with muffled thuds as he navigates the steep descent toward the valley. He keeps his movements deliberate, his ears constantly pivoting to catch the shifting sounds of the surrounding forest. The scent of the settlement grows stronger — a concentrated layer of woodsmoke, old stones and the overwhelming, thick musk of hundreds of wolves. It's a sensory overload that makes even the veteran alphas in his pack tense up. As they reach the edge of the ridge line overlooking the valley, Adam pauses. Below them, the ruins are illuminated by flickering torches. The ironwood wall stands dark and imposing against the moonlight, and within its perimeter, shapes move—too many shapes. Adam looks back at Ayla, his golden eyes reflecting the dim light from the torches. He doesn't shift back; he stays in wolf form, communicating through a low, steady presence that says stay close. Ayla bows her head, as if to say she understands. Adam leads the descent. He doesn't head straight for the main gate. Instead, he weaves through a dense patch of the thicket that skirts the edge of the ironwood wall, finding a narrow breach where the old stone ruins have crumbled into a natural pathway. The scent of two hundred alphas hits them again — hot, heavy, and territorial. It's like a physical pressure against Ayla's nose. As they cross the threshold of the perimeter, Adam's ears flatten slightly. He can hear them now. Low murmurs, the shuffling of feet, the occasional sharp bark of a sentry. The entire settlement seems to vibrate with awareness. A shadow detaches itself from the ruins ahead—a sentry wolf, large and mottled brown, blocking the path. It sniffs the air aggressively, it's hackles rising as it recognizes Adam. Then, his eyes shifted to Ayla. The sentry freezes. Ayla growled so low and deep it rumbled through the ground as her purple eyes stayed locked on the sentry. The sentry's hackles flatten instantly. His entire body trembles, a visible shudder that travels from his nose to his tail. He doesn't snarl back; he doesn't even bare his teeth. Instead, he lets out a submissive whimper and presses his belly to the dirt, eyes wide and fixed on the ground. Adam steps forward, placing himself between Ayla and the sentry. He lets out a short, sharp bark — a command for the subordinate to stand down and move. The sentry scrambles to his feet and trots away toward the nearest outpost, likely to report what he just saw. "That was a mistake." Mayson's wolf mutters, padding up beside Ayla. His tone is cautious, almost apologetic. "He's going to tell the others. They're going to come looking." True to his word, within minutes, the low murmur of the settlement shifts into something more urgent. Adam shifts back into his human form, his large frame clad in worn leather and rough-spun fabric. He wipes his hands across his face, his expression weary but calm. He glances toward the settlement, where torches are being lit in rapid succession. The murmurs are louder now, a rising tide of voices. "We all need to move inside before they all decide to come out here and stare." Adam continues, stepping toward a heavy stone archway that leads deeper into the ruins. "There's a central hall-old stone, thick walls. It'll muffle any noise." Mayson shifts back as well, leaning against the stone wall with a tired sigh. Ayla follows suit, dissolving into a cloud of smoke, leaving Revna standing in her place. The sudden shift back to human form draws every eye in the immediate vicinity. Revna was standing there, unbothered, her purple eyes cutting through the dim torchlight like twin gems. "Gods," Mayson mutters, rubbing his eyes. "The way you do that... It's not even painful. It's just... done." Adam doesn't comment on the shift. Instead, he keeps his eyes on the growing crowd of alphas emerging from the shadows of the ruins. They are congregating in small groups, their scents are a chaotic swirl of aggression and confusion. Some are bare-chested, showing off scars and tattoos; others are fully armored, weapons gripped loosely at their sides. "Stay close," Adam says, his voice dropping to a commanding register. He doesn't look at her when he speaks, but his body language is clear—he is positioning himself as a buffer between her and the crowd. Sensing the quick energy shift, Ayla growls deep within Revna's chest. Revna's eyes constantly sweeping the crowds anticipating a threat. The crowd halts as they approach the archway. The sheer weight of their collective attention is suffocating- two hundred pairs of eyes, most of them golden or amber, all fixed on the woman with the purple eyes. A low rumble of conversation ripples through them. A large alpha with a scarred jaw steps forward, his chest puffed out. He's not one of the six, just another high-ranking subordinate looking to make a name for himself. "Adam, what is this? You bring a female into the center of the settlement without a word?" Adam doesn't even turn his head. "Back off, Hale." "She's not just any female," Hale snaps, his nostrils flaring as he catches her scent. His eyes darken with something hungry and dangerous. "Something's different about her. I can feel it." Without even hesitating, Ayla burst forward where Revna had just stood. Her transition was as smooth as ever, like smoke. She is even bigger than Adam. Her purple eyes ablaze as she turned to Hale. "I smell a challenge!" Ayla's voice boomed as it rolled like thunder over the crowd, making the ground shake. The entire settlement went deathly silent. The kind of silence that follows a lightning strike — heavy, ringing, and absolute. Hale's bravado evaporates in an instant. His jaw drops, his eyes bulging as he stares up at the massive black wolf looming over him. He stumbles back, his heel catching on a loose stone, and he hits the ground hard. His scent shifts from aggression to pure, unadulterated terror in a heartbeat. The other alphas scatter. Some retreat into the shadows of the ruins, others drop to their knees, heads bowed instinctively against a presence that clearly dwarfs their own. Adam stands perfectly still. He doesn't shift. He doesn't move toward Ayla. He just watches her with an expression that is part awe, part profound relief. "Challenge accepted," Mayson whispers from behind him, though he looks like he'd rather be anywhere else on earth. Raven stood beside him, trembling visibly. Ayla walks over to Hale. Looming over him, a single word ran through his mind. 'Shift' The word was a command forcing Hale to shift instantly. Hale didn't even try to fight it. His body contorted with a violent, desperate speed, his bones snapping and reforming as he forced the transformation. His wolf emerged as a large, dark-furred wolf, but compared to Ayla, he looked small—almost fragile. Hale dropped to his haunches immediately, his tail tucked between his legs, his eyes fixed on the stone floor. He whines, a high-pitched, pathetic sound that echos off the ruin walls. The other alphas watching from the periphery are frozen. Some have shifted partially, their ears and tails twitching in nervous anticipation, but none dare move. Adam finally speaks, his voice cutting through the heavy silence. "That's enough, Ayla." He doesn't command her—he knows better than that—but his tone carries a quiet authority, a request for restraint. He steps closer, his gaze sweeping over a trembling Hale before settling back on the massive black wolf. Without a moment's pause, Ayla dissolves into a cloud of black smoke and Revna takes her place. She kneels in front of Hale, who still has his tale tucked in and he watches her, shaking. She looks into his eyes for a moment and then whispers something in his ear. Immediately, he stops shaking and his body relaxes. Revna ruffles the hair on the wolf's head before walking back to Adam.
