Adam fliches, not from her words, but from the sheer weight of the venom in her voice. He has never heard anyone speak to an alpha like that — not even the most rebellious members of his own pack. "You are right," he says, his voice quiet and level. "You can't trust them. Not blindly."
Mayson stands up, wiping the blood from his ribs with a grimace. "None of us can. But we aren't just some random herd of beasts. We're the ones who kept the species alive when everything else was dying off."
"We have rules," Raven adds, his tone earnest. "The settlement is built on structure. Hierarchy. Discipline. Without it, we'd have torn each other apart years ago."
Adam takes another step, stopping just outside of Revna's personal space, his eyes pleading with her.
Revna raised her eyebrow as Adam stepped closer, as if warning him not to move any closer." Which of you is hurt the worst?" She asked, the question catching them all off guard.
Adam stops instantly, his feet planted firmly where they are. He holds his hands visible, palms open, acknowledging the warning without a word. "Mayson," Adam says, gesturing toward the man leaning against the wall of the cave. "He has a deep gash on his ribs. He'll be fine by morning, but he is in pain now."
Mayson gives a tight pained nod. "It's nothing. I've had worse from a training spar."
"Raven's shoulder is dislocated," Fyre adds, stepping forward. "And Aron's got a concussion from the fall in the pass." Aron doesn't even defend himself; he just stares at the ground, his face flushed with a mix of shame and lingering fear.
Adams' eyes return to her, steady and patient. "We can tend to them ourselves. Or we can leave them for later. Whatever you decide, we move on your lead."
Revna steps closer to Aron and just stares at him for a minute. Slowly, she reaches out and touches his head. "I am sorry that I hurt you in the pass. I don't like hurting people unless I have to." She presses her fingers into his temples, not hard enough to bruise, but enough to hold his head firm in its place. She can feel his energy buzzing through his body. She moves some of that energy to his head to make him heal faster. Aron's eyes flutter shut as her hand touches his temple. The dull throb behind his eyes vanishes, replaced by a cool, clear sensation that makes him gasp. He looks up at her, speechless, his face still flushed but no longer from anger.
Next, she walks over to Raven and looks at his shoulder. "Take a breath," Revna says calmly, "Don't tense up." Her voice stern. She grabs his arm and lifts and shoves it back into place. Raven let out a sharp cry of relief as his shoulder went back into its socket. He rolls the joint cautiously, his eyes wide. "That's... That's incredible," he breathes, the tension draining from his frame in a single wave.
Without even flinching, Revna then walked up to Mayson, leaning down to look at the gash on his ribs. Using his own energy and just encouraging it to do its job faster, Mayson's wound began to knit back together. Mayson's breath hitches when she leans over him. The searing pain in his ribs dulls into a faint ache, then disappears entirely. He sits up straight, rubbing his side where the wound had been, just moments before. He looks at her with a profound scene of debt. "You're not just healing us," Mayson says softly, his voice thick with realization. "You're taking something from us to do it."
Revna looks at Mayson for a long moment before she answers. "I use your own energy." Her tone dry, as if that was the most obvious answer.
Adam watched her move between them with a stillness that bordered on reverence. He doesn't try to stop her, doesn't try to intervene. He just stands there, his eyes following the path of her hands, the way she manipulates his own vitality as if it were nothing more than water from a stream. "Your own energy," Adam repeats, the words tasting strange on his tongue. "So you aren't creating anything. You're just... directing it."
Mayson exhales, a long, shaky breath. "It feels like i just slept for twelve hours. My head is clear, my side doesn't ache..." He looks up at her, his expression raw. "Thank you."
"You take too long to heal," Revna's voice sounds bored as she speaks.
Aron finds his voice, though it's small and tentative. "I didn't mean to be rude earlier. I just... I've never seen anything like you."
Adam steps forward again, careful this time to keep a respectful distance.
"No one really has outside of my old pack," Revna says calmly. "My mother was like me, but my father kept us hidden. He was always afraid someone else would try to calim what was his. When my mother died, the day my wolf woke up, I just ran."
Adam's expression softened, the hard lines of his face giving way to something genuinely empathetic. He knows what its like to lose everything, to have the world narrow down to nothing but survival. "So you've been alone for a long time," he says quietly. "Just you and your wolf."
Raven nods slowly. "That's why you are so strong. You had to be."
"And why you don't trust us," Mayson adds, his voice low. "We're just more people who want things from you."
Adam crosses his arms, leaning against a stone pillar. "We're not your family. We can't replace them. But we can be your pack. There's a difference." He looks at Revna with an intensity that is both a promise and a question.
Revna paused for a moment. "Maybe. I want to see how a mere six alphas rule over a pack of two hundred alphas." She didn't even bother to hide her sarcasm.
Adam's lips twitch, the closest thing to a smile she's seen from him. It's not a warm expression — it's the look of a man who recognizes a sharp mind when he sees one. "It's not as pretty as it sounds," he says, pushing off the pillar. "Most of those two hundred would follow anyone with enough teeth and a loud enough voice. We keep them in line because we have to."
"And because we are the only ones left who know how to lead," Fyre adds, stepping into the light. "The rest are just surviving. They follow us because we have a plan. They follow us because we don't die every time something goes wrong." Mayson stands up, his movements fluid now that his ribs are healed. He looks at her with a wry grin.
"I'll go with you to your stronghold. But the first sign of danger, I am gone," Revna said, her eyes narrow and her tone sharp.
Adam nods, his expression turning serious. He doesn't argue with the condition. He knows better than to try and negotiate with someone who has just demonstrated they can heal themselves in seconds and manipulate life force at will. "Fair enough," he says, "We move tonight. The trail is easier by moonlight, and the herd won't be expecting us to move this fast." He gestures towards the others. "Raven, Mayson—you two take the rear. Fyre, Nolan, keep eyes on the ridge line. Aron, stay close to me."
Aron nods quickly, his previous hostility completely replaced by a quiet, almost eager obedience. The group began to move out of the cave, a disciplined line of wolves and men navigating the rocky terrain with practiced ease. Adam walks slightly ahead of Revna, not leading her, but carving out a path that offers some semblance of protection without being overbearing.
