The silence that followed was heavy, almost reverent. The six alphas exchange glances — some confused, some deeply unsettled, but none of them able to hit the fascination. "Two separate creatures," Nolan repeats slowly, his brow furrowed. "In all the stories from the elders, the wolf and human were one soul split in two. You're saying you are two whole beings?"
Adam leaned forward, his injured shoulder pulling tight. "That would explain why you move so much faster. You aren't fighting your wolf for control, you are working with her."
"That is impossible," Aron mutters, though his voice lacks conviction. He looks at Revna with a mixture of wariness and genuine curiosity. "No female I have heard of has that kind of autonomy."
"Maybe that is why you are the last one," Mayson says, quietly. His eyes dark and thoughtful.
Adam looks down at the deep gash on his shoulder, where blood is still oozing from the torn muscle. He closes his eyes, takes a long, steady breath. "How fast do you heal?" Revna watched each of the six alpha's as they tended to their wounds. The healing is visible as Adam lets the tension drain out of his frame. He doesn't answer Revna immediately. It's not like the movies. There is no magical glow — but the edges of the wound begin to knit together, the angry redness fading into a duller pink as the skin pulls tight. "A few hours for a deep cut," Adam says, opening his eyes. The bleeding stopped. "A day, for something that broke a bone. If it is life-threatening, maybe two."
"It's not free," Raven adds, wincing as he touches his own bruised ribs. "It takes energy. You eat, you sleep, you heal. If we don't rest, the wolf takes over just to keep the body functioning."
Revna watches each of the men for a moment before speaking. "I heal instantly."
The cave goes dead silent. Aron's jaw actually drops. Mayson stops min-motion, his hands frozen against his side. Even Adam, who had seen things most people couldn't imagine, stares at her with a look of profound disbelief.
"Instantly?" Raven asks, his voice barely a whisper. He looks at her as if she's just admitted to being a god. "That's not possible. Not for a lower ranking female."
"She is not just a lower ranking female," Fyre says, his voice trembling slightly. He looks around at the others, his eyes wide with a realization that seems to terrify him. "She's something else entirely." Adam stands up, despite the pain in his shoulder. He takes a slow, cautious step toward hers with an intensity that feels almost heavy. "If that is true..."
Revna does not give him the time to finish her sentence. She reaches down and grabs a jagged rock and slices her arm open. Deep. The cut revealed tendon and muscle. Before the blood streaming down her arm makes it to the tip of her fingertips, the wound is already closed. Revnas purple eyes focus on each of the six men, studying their reactions. Adam freezes mid-step. His eyes locked on the spot where her skin had just knit itself back together, smooth and unscarred as if the rock had never touched her. The silence in the cave is absolute, broken only by the sound of Fyre's uneven breathing.
"What the hell are you?" Aron breathes, his voice cracking. He scrambles backward, his back hitting the cave wall with a dull thud. Mayson doesn't move. He just stares, his face pale, his mouth slightly open. The wound had been deep enough to see muscle—he'd seen enough combat to know exactly what that looked like — and now it was gone. Adam takes another step forward, slow and deliberate, as if approaching something wild and unpredictable. He doesn't look afraid—he looks awestruck. "You are not just a lower-ranked female," he says, his voice low and steady despite the tremor running through him.
"I said, I don't know what I am," Revna repeats herself. "How many like you do you see with purple eyes?" Adam stops. He doesn't step closer this time. He stays exactly where he is, his hands open at his sides in a gesture of peace, though his eyes are burring with a desperate need to understand. "None," he says. The word flat, final. "I have lived for forty years. I've seen every shifter, every rouge, every mutation the pack has ever produced. I have never seen purple eyes."
Raven shakes his head slowly, his face pale in the dim cave light. "The legends talk about something before the disease. Something that came before the split between human and wolf. But those are just stories the old one would tell to keep us from being afraid of the dark."
"Stories aren't real," Aron says, though his voice is shaky. He's still pressed against the wall, watching her like she might explode any second.
"You said you'd agree to our terms if we got you out," Adam says, his voice dropping to that low, serious register again. "We kept our end. We fought for you. We brought you here." He pauses, letting the weight of the moment settle.
"I said I would agree on my own terms." Revnas eyes locked on to Adam. "But first, more about the stories you are speaking of. I have been looking for answers my whole life."
Raven clears his throat, his fingers nervously picking at the dirt on his palms. He shifted his weight, looking uncomfortable under her intense gaze. "The stories," he began, his voice hesitant. "They weren't just about lower-ranking females. They were about the Firsts. The ones who walked before the pack was ever formed. The elders said they didn't just have wolves inside them, they had the whole world inside them. They were everything all at once." He looks up at her, his eyes searching hers. "The Firsts were the balance," Raven continues, his voice dropping even lower. "The stories say they carried the strength of the wolf and the mind of the human without the need to trade one for the other. They could command the forest, the wind, even the beasts themselves. But they all disappeared." He pauses, swallowing hard. "The elders said they vanished because the world got too small for them. Or maybe because they decided they didn't want to be part of what we became."
Mayson shifts his gaze from Raven to Revna, his expression unreadable. "If you are one of them... Then you are definitely not just a lower-ranked female we need to protect. You are something we should be afraid of."
"I am not afraid of you," Adam said, though his voice has a sharp edge to it. He is standing tall, his injured shoulder held stiffly. His gaze does not waver. He meets her purple eyes with a steady, unblinking stare that challenges her to prove him wrong. "I'm not," he repeats, more to himself than to her. "But the others might be. You saw how Aron reacted."
Fyre, who had been silent near the cave entrance, turns around. His face was pale, his eyes wide. "It's not just fear, Adam. It's the scent. When she is near, it's like the air changes. It's not just low-ranked female. It's... It's like everything is right and wrong all at once."
Nolan nods slowly from where he sits. "The wolf in me hasn't growled once since we got here. Not even when she sliced her arm open. It just... Bowed." His admission hangs in the air, heavy and unsettling.
"Where do you live?" Revna asks the six men, who are still staring at her like she may be the most beautiful monster they have ever seen.
Adam doesn't hesitate. "The valley below. A fortified settlement built into the old stone ruins. It is safe. Guarded by two hundred alphas and a wall of ironwood trees." He steps forward, his expression hardening into something more practical, more protective. "It's not a palace. It's a stronghold. But it's yours if you want it."
Raven looks at her with a flicker of doubt. "You don't have to go. You could go back to your mountain. You have survived this long on your own."
"She is not going back to the damn mountain," Adam cuts him off, his voice final. He turns his attention back to her, his eyes searching. "The herd is still out there. They won't stop until they find you again. You can hide in the mountains until you die, or you can come with us and have a pack that actually stands between you and the world."
"How can I trust these two hundred alphas' to not turn into wild beasts as soon as I step on to your land?" The way Revna's eyes sharpened like daggers and her voice dripped with venom as she spoke was unsettling. "Disgusting creatures."
