"Watch us," Mayson says, his blade clearing its sheath with a deadly hiss. The stranger lunges. The passage explodes into chaos. Mayson and Raven meet the first wave head on, their movements a blur of steel and fury. Revna watches as the wolves clash together in the pass. Observing everything. Watching to spot a way out opens up among all of the chaos. The pass becomes a claustrophobic nightmare of fur, teeth, and snarling fury. The six alpha's fight with desperate, coordinated ferocity, driven by something far more intense than mere territorial defense. Adam is at the center, a mountain of muscle and teeth, tearing through the front line to keep the herd from breaking past. Revna's eyes scan the c*****e with clinical detachment. She isn't looking for a way to help. She is looking for a way out. To her left, she sees a narrow fissure in the rock wall, barely wide enough for a human body; It leads upward. It's steep, slick with moss, but it offers a path above the fray. 'That's it. Ayla whispers in her mind. 'The high ledge. If we make it to the ridge, we can disappear into the clouds.' Revna's body clenches as she gets ready to bolt for her exit. She grips the ground with her feet, but just as she gets ready to run she looks at the six men who are fighting for her. 'Ayla. What if they die?' Ayla's voice is a soft, aching vibration in the back of her mind. 'They are fighting for you. Not just for a female to breed. For you.' Revna's gaze drifts across the c*****e. Adam takes a heavy blow to the shoulder, his blood splattering against the grey stone, but he doesn't falter. He rips into another attacker with a ferocity that seems almost insane. Mayson's breathing is ragged, his movements are slowing as the numbers begin to overwhelm them. The fissure is right there. Revna could be gone in seconds. "She's not moving." Fyre calls out, his voice strained as he holds off two attackers at once. He catches a glimpse of Revna's silhouette against the rock and his eyes widen with a flicker of hope. "She is still here!" The scarred alpha breaks through the first line, his eyes finding Revna in the shadows. 'Ayla. How can we help? They are going to die if we don't do something.' Ayla's mental response is sharp, like a crack of lightning. 'We don't fight them. We break them. If you can reach the ledge above, you can drop those loose boulders. Crush their line. Break the momentum.' Revna didn't hesitate. She scrambled into the fissure, her fingers clawing at the slick rock as she hauled herself upward. The narrow passage constricts, pressing against her ribs, but she pushes through, driven by a sudden, fierce purpose. Above the chaos, she reaches a small, flat ledge. Ahead of her, a cluster of jagged stones sits precariously on the edge of the cliff, loosened by years of frost and rain. The scarred alpha has bypassed Adam now, his eyes fixed on Revna with predatory glee. He's gaining ground, his massive form tearing through the remaining defenders. "There!" He bellows, his voice a guttural roar." The prize is cornered!" 'Now!' Ayla yells into Revna's bones, and she pushes the boulders as hard as she can. The stones fall with a deafening roar, a cascade of grey and blown crashing down the narrow throat of the pass. The impact is catastrophic. The scarred alpha has just enough time to look up before the first boulder slams into him, driving him back into the mass of the herd with bone-crushing force. The narrow corridor becomes a death trap. The herd, caught in the bottleneck, is crushed against itself by the falling debris and the sudden shift in terrain. Screams and snarls fill the air as the line collapses into chaos. Below, Adam stumbles back, his eyes tracking upwards to the ledge. He sees the silhouette against the sky—the woman who just saved their lives. "She did it." Raven gasps, wiping blood from his mouth. He looks up at Revna, a raw, bewildered grin breaking through his exhaustion. The immediate threat is broken, but the pass is now a graveyard of stone and fur. "We need to leave now," Revna says. Adams head snaps toward her, his eyes burning with a mixture of relief and something much more intense. He doesn't argue. He knows she's right. "Form up." He bellows to the remaining five alphas. "We move now!" They scramble out of the c*****e, bruised and bleeding, but alive. Mayson and Raven take point, scanning the flanks, while Fyre and Nolan grab the rear to ensure no stragglers follow. Aron stays closest to Adam, his gaze darting between the injured path and Revna's silhouette on the ledge above. Revna jumps down from the ledge. The wind howls through the pass, carrying the scent of death and dust. Behind them, the sounds of the crushed herd began to settle into a low, wounded chorus of whines and groans, but the danger wasn't over. The black wolf' hits the ground running, her paws striking the ground with a new found purpose. She doesn't wait for direction. She leads. "Follow her!" Adam commands, his voice cracking with the strain of his injuries. The six alphas move in a tight, frantic formation behind Revna. They aren't running like hunters anymore; they are running like survivors. Mayson and Raven are breathing hard, their sides are bleeding from the shallow claw marks, but they keep pace. Fyre and Nolan push through the brush at the rear, glancing back every few seconds to ensure no one is gaining. Ayla's mind is a single, focused point of direction. 'North. The ridge. The cave system further up. We lose them in the caves.' The forest thickens as they climb higher, the trees pressing in close, their branches clawing at the alpha's shoulders. When they hit the cave system, Ayla let the alpha's take the lead for a while until they find a place to rest for a while. As soon as they stopped to rest, Ayla dissolved into a cloud of smoke and Revna reappeared. The transition is seamless. Unnatural. The cave is deep, the air cool and damp, smelling of wet stone and ancient dust. The six alphas drop to their knees one by one, their breathing heavy and ragged, filling the cavern with the sound of exhaustion. Adam is the las to shift back. He stands there for a moment, his chest heaving, eyes fixed on Revna. He watches the way she shifts. The seamless transition from wolf to woman, so smooth it defies the brutal physics of the change. It's unsettling. It's beautiful. "You're not normal," he says quietly, his voice echoing slightly in the stillness of the cave. Mayson sinks against the cave wall, his hand pressed to a jagged cut to his ribs. "She just saved us all," he mutters, looking up at her with a new kind of respect. "I don't think 'normal' is the right word." "I don't know what we are to be honest. Revna's eyes watching them all intently. "I am faster than most alphas and Ayla and I have a different kind of bond than most." Adam didn't know what she meant by a different kind of bond than most, but something deep inside him tugged a little at the mention of the word bond. "Speaking of a different kind of bond," Raven says from where he sat on flat rock rubbing his sore shoulder. "I felt it to," Adam said. "It wasn't just hunger. It was something else." "Like we were supposed to be following you," Fyre adds, leaning against the cave entrance, his eyes scanning the darkness outside. "Not chasing you." Mayson winces as he pulls his shirt away from the wound on his ribs. "Whatever it is, it kept us alive today," He looks at Revna, his expression serious. Revna watched them all nurse their wounds for a moment. "How do you function with your wolves? What kind of relationship do you have?" Adam looks at the others and then back to her. He sits down heavily on a stone slab, the movement stiff with pain. "It's not a conversation," he says, rubbing his face. "It's an instinct. A constant background noise in your head. You feel what they feel. You know when they are hungry, when they're angry, when they want to hunt." "It's more like a voice you can't turn off," Raven adds, leaning his head against the cave wall. "Sometimes it's loud, sometimes its quiet. But you never walk alone." He pauses, looking at her with a contemplative frown. "But yours... yours sounds different. You talked to her like she was another person." "She is," Revna says in a matter-of-fact tone. "When I shift, Ayla is in control. We share a mind, but we are two separate creatures entirely."
